On the threshold-width of graphs
The GG-width of a class of graphs GG is defined as follows. A graph G has
GG-width k if there are k independent sets N1,...,Nk in G such that G can be
embedded into a graph H in GG such that for every edge e in H which is not an
edge in G, there exists an i such that both endpoints of e are in Ni. For the
class TH of threshold graphs we show that TH-width is NP-complete and we
present fixed-parameter algorithms. We also show that for each k, graphs of
TH-width at most k are characterized by a finite collection of forbidden
induced subgraphs
Hamster leukemia virus: lack of endogenous DNA synthesis and unique structure of its DNA polymerase
Infectious hamster leukemia virus (HaLV) contains a DNA polymerase different from those of murine and avian viruses. No endogenous reaction directed by the 60 to 70S RNA of HaLV could be demonstrated in detergenttreated HaLV virions, nor could the purified DNA polymerase copy added viral RNA. The virion RNA could, however, act as template for added avian myeloblastosis virus DNA polymerase and the HaLV DNA polymerase could efficiently utilize homopolymers as templates. The HaLV enzyme was like other reverse transcriptases in that certain ribohomopolymers were much better templates than the homologous deoxyribohomopolymers. No ribonuclease H activity could be shown in the HaLV enzyme, but neither could activity be found in the murine leukemia virus DNA polymerase. The hamster enzyme was unique in that poly(A) ·oligo(dT) was a poor template, and globin mRNA primed with oligo(dT) was totally inactive as a template. Its uniqueness was also indicated by its subunit composition; electrophoresis of the HaLV DNA polymerase in sodium dodecyl sulfate-containing polyacrylamide gels revealed equimolar amounts of two polypeptides of molecular weight 68,000 and 53,000. The sedimentation rate of the enzyme in glycerol gradients was consistent with a structure containing one each of the two polypeptides. The enzyme thus appears to be structurally distinct from other known virion DNA polymerases. Mining and Incentive Concession Contracts
This paper studies the design of a mining concession contract as a multi-period autoselection problem where production is the depletion of a non renewable resource. As compared to symmetric information, we show that overproduction (resp. underproduction) is optimal in the initial phase (resp. terminal phase ) of the resource extraction program. Also, asymmetric information lengthens the contract duration but reduces the scarcity rent. Finally, when there are several agents competing for contract bid, we show that optimal auctioning could be used to award the concession, assigning the lowest cost agent to carry out the extraction.ADVERSE SELECTION; EXHAUSTIBILITY; OVERPRODUCTION
Bandwidth and density for block graphs
The bandwidth of a graph G is the minimum of the maximum difference between
adjacent labels when the vertices have distinct integer labels. We provide a
polynomial algorithm to produce an optimal bandwidth labeling for graphs in a
special class of block graphs (graphs in which every block is a clique), namely
those where deleting the vertices of degree one produces a path of cliques. The
result is best possible in various ways. Furthermore, for two classes of graphs

Exotic fermion multiplets as a solution to baryon asymmetry, dark matter and neutrino masses
We propose an extension to the standard model where three exotic fermion
5-plets and one scalar 6-plet are added to the particle content. By demanding
that all interactions are renormalizable and standard model gauge invariant, we
show that the lightest exotic particle in this model can be a dark matter
candidate as long as the new 6-plet scalar does not develop a nonzero vacuum
expectation value. Furthermore, light neutrino masses are generated radiatively
at one-loop while the baryon asymmetry is produced by the CP-violating decays
of the second lightest exotic particle. We have demonstrated using concrete
examples that there is a parameter space where a consistent solution to the

The catalytic core of DEMETER guides active DNA demethylation in Arabidopsis.
The Arabidopsis DEMETER (DME) DNA glycosylase demethylates the maternal genome in the central cell prior to fertilization and is essential for seed viability. DME preferentially targets small transposons that flank coding genes, influencing their expression and initiating plant gene imprinting. DME also targets intergenic and heterochromatic regions, but how it is recruited to these differing chromatin landscapes is unknown. The C-terminal half of DME consists of 3 conserved regions required for catalysis in vitro. We show that this catalytic core guides active demethylation at endogenous targets, rescuing dme developmental and genomic hypermethylation phenotypes. However, without the N terminus, heterochromatin demethylation is significantly impeded, and abundant CG-methylated genic sequences are ectopically demethylated. Comparative analysis revealed that the conserved DME N-terminal domains are present only in flowering plants, whereas the domain architecture of DME-like proteins in nonvascular plants mainly resembles the catalytic core, suggesting that it might represent the ancestral form of the 5mC DNA glycosylase found in plant lineages. We propose a bipartite model for DME protein action and suggest that the DME N terminus was acquired late during land plant evolution to improve specificity and facilitate demethylation at heterochromatin targets
Spectral properties and magneto-optical excitations in semiconductor double-rings under Rashba spin-orbit interaction
We have numerically solved the Hamiltonian of an electron in a semiconductor
double ring subjected to the magnetic flux and Rashba spin-orbit interaction.
It is found that the Aharonov-Bohm energy spectrum reveals multi-zigzag
periodic structures. The investigations of spin-dependent electron dynamics via
Rabi oscillations in two-level and three-level systems demonstrate the
possibility of manipulating quantum states. Our results show that the optimal
control of photon-assisted inter-ring transitions can be achieved by employing
cascade-type and -type transition mechanisms. Under chirped pulse
impulsions, a robust and complete transfer of an electron to the final state is
shown to coincide with the estimation of the Landau-Zener formula.Comment: RevTex, 9 pages, 5 figure
Near-Infrared MOSFIRE Spectra of Dusty Star-Forming Galaxies at 0.2<z<4
We present near-infrared and optical spectroscopic observations of a sample
of 450m and 850m-selected dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs)
identified in a 400 arcmin area in the COSMOS field. Thirty-one sources of
the 102 targets were spectroscopically confirmed at , identified
primarily in the near-infrared with Keck MOSFIRE and some in the optical with
Keck LRIS and DEIMOS. The low rate of confirmation is attributable both to high
rest-frame optical obscuration in our targets and limited sensitivity to
certain redshift ranges. The high-quality photometric redshifts available in
the COSMOS field allow us to test the robustness of photometric redshifts for
DSFGs. We find a subset (11/31%) of DSFGs with inaccurate () or non-existent photometric redshifts; these have very distinct
spectral energy distributions from the remaining DSFGs, suggesting a decoupling
of highly obscured and unobscured components. We present a composite rest-frame
4300--7300\AA\ spectrum for DSFGs, and find evidence of 20030 km s
gas outflows. Nebular line emission for a sub-sample of our detections indicate
that hard ionizing radiation fields are ubiquitous in high-z DSFGs, even more
so than typical mass or UV-selected high-z galaxies. We also confirm the
extreme level of dust obscuration in DSFGs, measuring very high Balmer
decrements, and very high ratios of IR to UV and IR to H luminosities.
This work demonstrates the need to broaden the use of wide bandwidth technology
in the millimeter to the spectroscopic confirmations of large samples of high-z
DSFGs, as the difficulty in confirming such sources at optical/near-infrared

A Study on Tourism Development Strategy of Kaohsiung City in Taiwan after Urban Style Regeneration
Urban tourism has gradually been emphasized in past years; especially, it is regarded as a savior of urban regeneration in old industrial cities. When losing the competitive advantages and getting declined, old industrial cities are facing the challenge of transformation. The development of urban tourism is considered as the opportunity of industrial cities in dark recession that they start to involve in the development of tourism. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied in this study to evaluate key success factors in the tourism development strategy of Kaohsiung City after the urban style regeneration. AHP is used for confirming the levels of various evaluation factors. The first hierarchy contains four evaluation dimensions, and 14 evaluation standards are covered in the second hierarchy. The results reveal the important sequence of four evaluation factors in the second hierarchy as (1) marketing activity, (2) management strategy, (3) recreational environment, and (4) infrastructure, where the importance of evaluation factors in the third hierarchy is sequenced as (1) urban attraction, (2) environmental facility maintenance, (3) celebrations, (4) local characteristics, and (5) natural landscape. The research results and suggestions in this study are expected to enhance the tourism development of Kaohsiung City in Taiwan after the urban style regeneration.
