Accurate time-domain gravitational waveforms for extreme-mass-ratio binaries
The accuracy of time-domain solutions of the inhomogeneous Teukolsky equation
is improved significantly. Comparing energy fluxes in gravitational waves with
highly accurate frequency-domain results for circular equatorial orbits in
Schwarzschild and Kerr, we find agreement to within 1% or better, which we
believe can be even further improved. We apply our method to orbits for which
frequency-domain calculations have a relative disadvantage, specifically
high-eccentricity (elliptical and parabolic) "zoom-whirl" orbits, and find the
energy fluxes, waveforms, and characteristic strain in gravitational waves.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables; Changes: some errors corrected.

The Herschel Planetary Nebula Survey (HerPlaNS) - a comprehensive dusty photoionization model of NGC6781
We perform a comprehensive analysis of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC6781 to
investigate the physical conditions of each of its ionized, atomic, and
molecular gas and dust components and the object's evolution, based on
panchromatic observational data ranging from UV to radio. Empirical nebular
elemental abundances, compared with theoretical predictions via nucleosynthesis
models of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, indicate that the progenitor is
a solar-metallicity, 2.25-3.0 Msun initial-mass star. We derive the best-fit
distance of 0.46 kpc by fitting the stellar luminosity (as a function of the
distance and effective temperature of the central star) with the adopted
post-AGB evolutionary tracks. Our excitation energy diagram analysis indicate
high excitation temperatures in the photodissociation region (PDR) beyond the
ionized part of the nebula, suggesting extra heating by shock interactions
between the slow AGB wind and the fast PN wind. Through iterative fitting using
the Cloudy code with empirically-derived constraints, we find the best-fit
dusty photoionization model of the object that would inclusively reproduce all
of the adopted panchromatic observational data. The estimated total gas mass
(0.41 Msun) corresponds to the mass ejected during the last AGB thermal pulse
event predicted for a 2.5 Msun initial-mass star. A significant fraction of the
total mass (about 70 percent) is found to exist in the PDR, demonstrating the
critical importance of the PDR in PNe that are generally recognized as the

Analysis of Neighbourhoods in Multi-layered Dynamic Social Networks
Social networks existing among employees, customers or users of various IT
systems have become one of the research areas of growing importance. A social
network consists of nodes - social entities and edges linking pairs of nodes.
In regular, one-layered social networks, two nodes - i.e. people are connected
with a single edge whereas in the multi-layered social networks, there may be
many links of different types for a pair of nodes. Nowadays data about people
and their interactions, which exists in all social media, provides information
about many different types of relationships within one network. Analysing this
data one can obtain knowledge not only about the structure and characteristics
of the network but also gain understanding about semantic of human relations.
Are they direct or not? Do people tend to sustain single or multiple relations
with a given person? What types of communication is the most important for
them? Answers to these and more questions enable us to draw conclusions about
semantic of human interactions. Unfortunately, most of the methods used for
social network analysis (SNA) may be applied only to one-layered social
networks. Thus, some new structural measures for multi-layered social networks
are proposed in the paper, in particular: cross-layer clustering coefficient,
cross-layer degree centrality and various versions of multi-layered degree
centralities. Authors also investigated the dynamics of multi-layered
neighbourhood for five different layers within the social network. The
evaluation of the presented concepts on the real-world dataset is presented.
The measures proposed in the paper may directly be used to various methods for
collective classification, in which nodes are assigned to labels according to

Age estimation by tooth/pulp ratio in canines by peri-apical X-rays: reliability in age determination of Spanish and Italian medieval skeletal remains
Estimation of age at death is an unavoidable step in the process of human identification, both in forensic
practice and in the anthropological and palaeopathological study of skeletal remains. In several cases, in
which medical or demographic records are completely lacking, a reliable estimation of the age at death
becomes very important. Skeletal remains from archaeological contexts suffer from several biasing
factors such as post-mortem changes, taphonomy and various burial practices depending on age, sex and
social status of the deceased persons.
Currently, anthropological methods of age determination reveal several possibilities of inaccuracy. Of
all the body parts used in age estimation, teeth are the least affected by any taphonomic process.
Although there are many dental methods for age at death estimation, some of them are very complex
and/or destructive and they are not normally used in anthropology. However, study of the apposition of
secondary dentine by examining peri-apical X-rays of canines is beginning to supply very interesting
results.
The aim of this work was to test Cameriere\u2019s method on a large sample of historical subjects from
several cemeteries in Spain and Italy. The Spanish sample belongs to the Medieval cemetery of La Torrecilla
(Arenas del Rey, Granada) and is housed in the Laboratory of Anthropology, Faculty of Medicine,
University of Granada. The Italian samples come from the Medieval cemeteries of Comacchio (Ferrara)
and Castel S. Pietro (Bologna).
In order to test the reliability of Cameriere\u2019s method, age estimations of canines were compared with
the mean ranges of age of the most commonly applied anthropological methods such as tooth wear
changes in the pubic symphysis or the metamorphosis of the auricular surface of the ilium. Tests on these
Middle Ages cemeteries produced satisfactory results, indicating that Cameriere\u2019s method is a reliable
tool in determining age at death in skeletal remains of archaeological context

TCE field-scale simulation using immobile-mobile waste phase model
Groundwater contamination resulting from releases of chlorinated volatile organic compounds into the environment is commonplace. Industrial solvents, such as trichloroethylene (TCE), were historically released into top soils as a means of disposal. At numerous sites nationwide, cleanup efforts are underway. To evaluate the benefits associated with proposed remediation alternatives, flow and transport modeling is playing an ever increasing role. In many situations site characterization of contaminant source terms is very sketchy, resulting in a lack of necessary data to develop a reliable source term model directly from a database. As such, investigators are forced into an approach of estimating the source term in an inverse modeling fashion. Field-scale attempts are made here to predict the fate and transport of TCE under various remediation alternatives. Under a no action scenario, inverse modeling to establish the source term is performed where comparison to field measurements are made
XSHOOTER spectroscopy of the enigmatic planetary nebula Lin49 in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We performed a detailed spectroscopic analysis of the fullerene C60-containing planetary nebula (PN) Lin49 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using XSHOOTER at the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope and the Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph instruments. We derived nebular abundances for nine elements. We used TLUSTY to derive photospheric parameters for the central star. Lin49 is C-rich and metal-deficient PN (Z ∼ 0.0006). The nebular abundances are in good agreement with asymptotic giant branch nucleosynthesis models for stars with initial mass 1.25 M⊙ and metallicity Z = 0.001. Using the TLUSTY synthetic spectrum of the central star to define the heating and ionizing source, we constructed the photoionization model with CLOUDY that matches the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) and the line fluxes in the UV to far-IR wavelength ranges simultaneously. We could not fit the ∼1–5 μm SED using a model with 0.005–0.1-μm-sized graphite grains and a constant hydrogen density shell owing to the prominent near-IR excess, while at other wavelengths the model fits the observed values reasonably well. We argue that the near-IR excess might indicate either (1) the presence of very small particles in the form of small carbon clusters, small graphite sheets, or fullerene precursors, or (2) the presence of a high-density structure surrounding the central star. We found that SMC C60 PNe show a near-IR excess component to lesser or greater degree. This suggests that these C60 PNe might maintain a structure nearby their central star
SPECIAL ANALYSIS FOR SLIT TRENCH DISPOSAL OF THE REACTOR PROCESS HEAT EXCHANGERS
The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), in response to a request from Solid Waste Management (SWM), conducted a Special Analysis (SA) to evaluate the performance of nineteen heat exchangers that are to be disposed in the E-Area low level waste facility Slit Trench 9 (ST 9). Although these nineteen heat exchangers were never decontaminated, the majority of the radionuclides in the heat exchanger inventory list were determined to be acceptable for burial because they are less than the 'generic' waste form inventory limits given in the 2008 Performance Assessment (PA) (WSRC, 2008). However, as generic waste, the H-3 and C-14 inventories resulted in unacceptable sum-of-fractions (SOFs). Initial scoping analyses performed by SRNL indicated that if alterations were made to certain external nozzles to mitigate various potential leak paths, acceptable SOFs could be achieved through the use of a 'Special' waste form. This SA provides the technical basis for this new 'Special' waste form and provides the inventory limits for H-3 and C-14 for these nineteen heat exchangers such that the nineteen heat exchangers can be disposed in ST 9. This 'Special' waste form is limited to these nineteen heat exchangers in ST 9 and applies for H-3 and C-14, which are designated as H-3X and C-14X, respectively. The SA follows the same methodology used in the 2008 PA and the 2008 SA except for the modeling enhancements noted below. Infiltration rates above the heat exchangers are identical to those used in the 2008 PA; however, flow through the heat exchangers is unique. Because it is unknown exactly how sealed heat exchanger openings will perform and how surface and embedded contaminants will be released, multiple base cases or scenarios were established to investigate a set of performances. Each scenario consists of flow options (based on the performance of sealed openings) and a near-field release of contaminants (based on corrosion and diffusion performance). Two disposal configurations were analyzed where heat exchangers were assumed to be disposed four across and five lengthwise (the 4x5 configuration, with one empty) and three across and seven lengthwise (the 3x7 configuration, with two empty). A large range of conditions was considered. For example, peak well concentrations at the 100-m boundary for H-3 are shown in Figure ES-1 for a wide range of configurations (i.e. release mechanism and degree of sealing options). The maximum contaminant level (MCL) and a 10% SOF goal for H-3 are also shown. The 10% goal was based on an estimated volume fraction that these nineteen heat exchangers would consume in ST 9 and was solely used for scoping purposes to assess disposal feasibility and sealing requirements. Because various line breaks and poor sealing greatly exceeded that 10% goal, the determination was made that mitigating activities were needed, such as protection from line breaks and better sealing. An initial set of scenarios was run to assess the requirements for sealing the heat exchanger openings and the need to ensure that the sealed heat exchangers stayed sealed during transit and disposal operations. After discovering that such mitigating activities were required, additional scenarios were run that included the mitigating activities. Scenarios deemed to have a very low probability of occurrence were excluded from consideration for calculating inventory limits (for example, those scenarios that assumed an instantaneous release of contaminants along with poor sealing). The SA used the most recent K{sub d} values for the C-14 analyses and the most recent Dose Conversion Factors for H-3 and C-14 which have been updated since the 2008 PA was issued. This SA took into account the location and the disposal timing of these heat exchangers. The disposal location is within a small area of the overall Slit Trench unit (about 6% of the total) and is behind a line that is 200 ft from the down-gradient edge of ST 9. The disposal timing is assumed to be after July 1, 2012 (because disposals cannot occur until this document is approved and mitigating activities are completed) which means that the disposal occurs after the first time period for the 2008 PA beta-gamma pathway (that time period is from December 1995 until December 2007), thus that pathway time period is not considered. Table ES-1 provides new 'Special' waste form groundwater pathway inventory limits for C-14X and H-3X in the heat exchangers. Inventory limits for generic C-14 and H-3 in the West Slit Trenches are included for comparison. The lowest limit for generic C-14 is 1.9E-1 Ci, while for C-14X it is 2.7E0, an increase of more than 14 times. Because time windows are employed, at later times C-14X exhibits lower limits than those for generic C-14 because with its smaller K{sub d} the C-14 moves much faster. The lowest limit for generic H-3 is 3.6E0 Ci, while for H-3X it is 1.7E3, an increase of almost 500 times
Perturbative evolution of particle orbits around Kerr black holes: time domain calculation
Treating the Teukolsky perturbation equation numerically as a 2+1 PDE and
smearing the singularities in the particle source term by the use of narrow
Gaussian distributions, we have been able to reproduce earlier results for
equatorial circular orbits that were computed using the frequency domain
formalism. A time domain prescription for a more general evolution of nearly
geodesic orbits under the effects of radiation reaction is presented. This
approach can be useful when tackling the more realistic problem of a
stellar-mass black hole moving on a generic orbit around a supermassive black

REFLEX, a social-cognitive group treatment to improve insight in schizophrenia:Study protocol of a multi-center RCT
BACKGROUND: Insight is impaired in a majority of people with schizophrenia. Impaired insight is associated with poorer outcomes of the disorder. Based on existing literature, we developed a model that explains which processes may possibly play a role in impaired insight. This model was the starting point of the development of REFLEX: a brief psychosocial intervention to improve insight in schizophrenia. REFLEX is a 12-sessions group training, consisting of three modules of four sessions each. Modules in this intervention are: "coping with stigma", "you and your personal narrative", and "you in the present". METHODS/DESIGN: REFLEX is currently evaluated in a multicenter randomized controlled trial. Eight mental health institutions in the Netherlands participate in this evaluation. Patients are randomly assigned to either REFLEX or an active control condition, existing of cognitive remediation exercises in a group. In a subgroup of patients, fMRI scans are made before and after training in order to assess potential haemodynamic changes associated with the effects of the training. DISCUSSION: REFLEX is one of the few interventions aiming specifically to improving insight in schizophrenia and has potential value for improving insight. Targeting insight in schizophrenia is a complex task, that comes with several methodological issues. These issues are addressed in the discussion of this paper.
