    The Saccharomyces cerevisiae mitotic exit network (MEN) is a conserved signaling network that coordinates events associated with the M to G1 transition. We investigated the function of two S. cerevisiae proteins related to the MEN proteins Mob1p and Dbf2p kinase. Previous work indicates that cells lacking the Dbf2p-related protein Cbk1p fail to sustain polarized growth during early bud morphogenesis and mating projection formation (Bidlingmaier, S., E.L. Weiss, C. Seidel, D.G. Drubin, and M. Snyder. 2001. Mol. Cell. Biol. 21:2449-2462). Cbk1p is also required for Ace2p-dependent transcription of genes involved in mother/daughter separation after cytokinesis. Here we show that the Mob1p-related protein Mob2p physically associates with Cbk1p kinase throughout the cell cycle and is required for full Cbk1p kinase activity, which is periodically activated during polarized growth and mitosis. Both Mob2p and Cbk1p localize interdependently to the bud cortex during polarized growth and to the bud neck and daughter cell nucleus during late mitosis. We found that Ace2p is restricted to daughter cell nuclei via a novel mechanism requiring Mob2p, Cbk1p, and a functional nuclear export pathway. Furthermore, nuclear localization of Mob2p and Ace2p does not occur in mob1-77 or cdc14-1 mutants, which are defective in MEN signaling, even when cell cycle arrest is bypassed. Collectively, these data indicate that Mob2p-Cbk1p functions to (a) maintain polarized cell growth, (b) prevent the nuclear export of Ace2p from the daughter cell nucleus after mitotic exit, and (c) coordinate Ace2p-dependent transcription with MEN activation. These findings may implicate related proteins in linking the regulation of cell morphology and cell cycle transitions with cell fate determination and development

    Whether reversed, affirmed, vacated, or remanded, a review of the interaction between the two courts over twenty-two cases reveals several fundamental differences between the two courts on key issues. This Comment examines these differences by exploring twenty of those decisions and how they illustrate the relationship between the Ninth Circuit and Supreme Court. Part I examines the decisions that arose from the Supreme Court\u27s review of Ninth Circuit decisions. Part II ties these decisions and conclusions into a larger motif emerging between the Ninth Circuit and Supreme Court, and Part III ultimately concludes that the future is likely to continue to see disagreements between the two courts

    National 4-H Congress: A Retrospective Evaluation

    National 4-H Congress is an example of a programmatic effort designed to help youth develop various life skills. For this study, demographic, event satisfaction, and application of knowledge data were collected from 2,154 past Congress participants. Findings revealed that the majority of participants were satisfied or very satisfied with their Congress experience, and 63% of the respondents had used information gained from the event. Continued efforts to ensure future delegations represent the diversity of 4-H are encouraged, along with continued evaluation of event satisfaction levels and the extent to which life skills are developed and retained

    Quasiparticle Transformation During a Metal-Insulator Transition in Graphene

    Here we show, with simultaneous transport and photoemission measurements, that the graphene terminated SiC(0001) surface undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) upon dosingwith small amounts of atomic hydrogen. We find the room temperature resistance increases by about 4 orders of magnitude, a transition accompanied by anomalies in the momentum-resolved spectral function including a non-Fermi Liquid behaviour and a breakdown of the quasiparticle picture. These effects are discussed in terms of a possible transition to a strongly (Anderson) localized ground state.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Microbial diversity across a Canadian sub-Arctic, isostatically rebounding, soil transect

    AbstractSeacoast to inland soil transects of 1 and 2km were researched over 2years to understand the microbial diversity in a post ice age, isostatically, rebounding, soil environment. Community level substrate utilization analysis and 16S rDNA eubacterial diversity were employed. The community level substrate analysis demonstrated that regardless of the location along the transect from seacoast to forest, sandy or peat soil, the microbial diversity (Shannon diversity index about 3) was virtually the same. Shannon diversity indexes based on PCR-DGGE analysis yielded values between about 0.6 and about 2 depending on the sand or peat soil type and the year the samples were collected and analyzed (2002 and 2003). Regardless of the genetic diversity, the soils exhibited similar metabolic capabilities. This is a good example of redundant, functional, physiology regardless of the species present at each location along the transects

    Response of the Shockley surface state to an external electrical field: A density-functional theory study of Cu(111)

    The response of the Cu(111) Shockley surface state to an external electrical field is characterized by combining a density-functional theory calculation for a slab geometry with an analysis of the Kohn-Sham wavefunctions. Our analysis is facilitated by a decoupling of the Kohn-Sham states via a rotation in Hilbert space. We find that the surface state displays isotropic dispersion, quadratic until the Fermi wave vector but with a significant quartic contribution beyond. We calculate the shift in energetic position and effective mass of the surface state for an electrical field perpendicular to the Cu(111) surface; the response is linear over a broad range of field strengths. We find that charge transfer occurs beyond the outermost copper atoms and that accumulation of electrons is responsible for a quarter of the screening of the electrical field. This allows us to provide well-converged determinations of the field-induced changes in the surface state for a moderate number of layers in the slab geometry.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication by Phys.
