Simulation Studies of the NLC with Improved Ground Motion Models
The performance of various systems of the Next Linear Collider (NLC) have
been studied in terms of ground motion using recently developed models. In
particular, the performance of the beam delivery system is discussed. Plans to
evaluate the operation of the main linac beam-based alignment and feedback

Perceived fairness of organizational drug testing policies: An examination of voice and consistency
Increasingly, organizations are implementing drug testing programs as a means of reducing the high costs of drug use. Although employees\u27 attitudes towards various policies have been examined, two issues have not been addressed. First, justice research indicates that individuals react favorably to procedures that allow them an opportunity to express their views and arguments (i.e., voice). However, this policy has not been examined within the drug testing context. Additionally, research has not examined reactions to policies that allow managers discretion in applying procedures in order to take extenuating circumstances into account. Reactions to these drug testing policies were assessed using data from 128 undergraduate psychology students. A main effect of voice on perceptions of procedural and distributive justice was hypothesized. Voice effects were expected to be magnified in the situationally guided conditions in comparison with the rule-guided conditions. A voice by policy type interaction was predicted for trust, bias, and perceptions of relevant information. Specifically, the supervisor was expected tobe perceived as more trustworthy, less biased, and as using more relevant information in arriving at his decision of what consequence the employee was to receive when a situationally guided policy was used and voice was permitted than in the other three conditions. Partial support for the hypotheses was found. In general, subjects indicated a preference for rule-guided policies, particularly when voice is not permitted. In addition, a trend of negative reactions to the situationally guided no voice condition emerged. Specifically, in this condition, the supervisor was perceived as more biased and as using irrelevant information in the decision of what consequence the employee would receive. Numerical Evaluation of Energy Release Rate at Material Interfaces for Fatigue Life Predictions
Composite materials are becoming popular in almost all industries. Carbon-fiber and glass-fiber composites are used in aircraft, sports equipment, boats, prosthetics, and wind turbine blades. In all these applications, the composites are subjected to different loads. Loads can take the form of impact or cyclic/fatigue loading, both of which decrease the strength of composites as micro-cracks grow through the composite. Composite laminates are made up of fiber plies (thin layers of fiber) and the fibers are surrounded by a resin like epoxy. It is common for laminates to fail because of delamination growth (plies peeling apart). Small delaminations do not fail a composite, but as delaminations grow, the composite weakens and eventually fails. Composites behave differently than metals do, and failure analysis is more complicated because of the various directions of fibers. Numerical methods (specifically Finite Element Analysis) exist for predicting when failure will occur, but improvements are needed to make these numerical methods more accurate and efficient. The method created, for this thesis, is computationally efficient because it doesn’t require the analyst or computer to adjust the simulation based on where the delamination is (or what kind of shape it is). Energy values are extracted directly from the delamination front and not averaged from nearby locations

Beam-based Feedback Simulations for the NLC Linac
Extensive beam-based feedback systems are planned as an integral part of the
Next Linear Collider (NLC) control system. Wakefield effects are a significant
influence on the feedback design, imposing both architectural and algorithmic
constraints. Studies are in progress to assure the optimal selection of devices
and to refine and confirm the algorithms for the system design. We show the
results of initial simulations, along with evaluations of system response for
