Memoria 1988
La Memoria que tiene en sus manos corresponde a un año, 1988, en el que han coexistido dos equipos de dirección La lógica transición explica algunos de los aspectos innovadores respecto al modelo de pasados años; innovaciones que persiguen el objetivo de acercar la Institución no sólo a la comunidad científica, sino a la sociedad en general. Por otra parte, ha sido precisamente en esta etapa cuando se ha puesto en marcha el Plan Nacional de Investigación Científica y Desarrollo Tecnológico, en el que el Consejo va a actuar como destacado instrumento ejecutor de sus prioridades y líneas.
La ciencia y el desarrollo tecnológico impregnan cada vez más a la innovación industrial, a la economía, a la cultura y en general a todos los elementos de calidad de vida de los ciudadanos.
El CSIC, el mayor organismo científico multidisciplinar español, tiene una lógica vocación de servicio, en sentido amplio, a la sociedad que lo soporta y lo anima. Si su misión fundamental es la realización de ciencia y la ejecución de la política científica nacional, no puede en ningún caso sustraerse a la tarea de informar públicamente de sus trabajos y logros. La investigación que se realiza en sus Centros es sometida sistemáticamente a la evaluación de la comunidad investigadora y de los responsables del diseño de la política científica nacional, a través de informes o publicaciones específicas. La Memoria debe ser un elemento integrador y accesible a todos los sectores y por este motivo tratamos de que sea progresivamente más divulgadora y atractiva. Cuando esta Memoria que ahora presentamos salga a la luz ya estará en la imprenta la de 1989 y en ella se podrá juzgar el grado de consecución de esta meta.Peer reviewe
Irradiation study of a fully monolithic HV-CMOS pixel sensor design in AMS 180 nm
High-Voltage Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (HV-MAPS) based on the 180 nm
HV-CMOS process have been proposed to realize thin, fast and highly integrated
pixel sensors. The MuPix7 prototype, fabricated in the commercial AMS H18
process, features a fully integrated on-chip readout, i.e. hit-digitization,
zero suppression and data serialization. It is the first fully monolithic
HV-CMOS pixel sensor that has been tested for the use in high irradiation
environments like HL-LHC. We present results from laboratory and test beam
measurements of MuPix7 prototypes irradiated with neutrons (up to
) and protons (up to ) and compare the performance with non-irradiated
sensors. Efficiencies well above 90 % at noise rates below 200 Hz per pixel are
measured. A time resolution better than 22 ns is measured for all tested
settings and sensors, even at the highest irradiation fluences. The data
transmission at 1.25 Gbit/s and the on-chip PLL remain fully functional
The MuPix Telescope: A Thin, high Rate Tracking Telescope
The MuPix Telescope is a particle tracking telescope, optimized for tracking
low momentum particles and high rates. It is based on the novel High-Voltage
Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (HV-MAPS), designed for the Mu3e tracking
detector. The telescope represents a first application of the HV-MAPS
technology and also serves as test bed of the Mu3e readout chain. The telescope
consists of up to eight layers of the newest prototypes, the MuPix7 sensors,
which send data self-triggered via fast serial links to FPGAs, where the data
is time-ordered and sent to the PC. A particle hit rate of 1 MHz per layer
could be processed. Online tracking is performed with a subset of the incoming
data. The general concept of the telescope, chip architecture, readout concept
and online reconstruction are described. The performance of the sensor and of

Expression of functional inhibitory neurotransmitter transporters GlyT1, GAT-1, and GAT-3 by astrocytes of inferior colliculus and hippocampus.
Neuronal inhibition is mediated by glycine and/or GABA. Inferior colliculus (IC) neurons receive glycinergic and GABAergic inputs, whereas inhibition in hippocampus (HC) predominantly relies on GABA. Astrocytes heterogeneously express neurotransmitter transporters and are expected to adapt to the local requirements regarding neurotransmitter homeostasis. Here we analyzed the expression of inhibitory neurotransmitter transporters in IC and HC astrocytes using whole-cell patch-clamp and single-cell reverse transcription-PCR. We show that most astrocytes in both regions expressed functional glycine transporters (GlyTs). Activation of these transporters resulted in an inward current (IGly) that was sensitive to the competitive GlyT1 agonist sarcosine. Astrocytes exhibited transcripts for GlyT1 but not for GlyT2. Glycine did not alter the membrane resistance (RM) arguing for the absence of functional glycine receptors (GlyRs). Thus, IGly was mainly mediated by GlyT1. Similarly, we found expression of functional GABA transporters (GATs) in all IC astrocytes and about half of the HC astrocytes. These transporters mediated an inward current (IGABA) that was sensitive to the competitive GAT-1 and GAT-3 antagonists NO711 and SNAP5114, respectively. Accordingly, transcripts for GAT-1 and GAT-3 were found but not for GAT-2 and BGT-1. Only in hippocampal astrocytes, GABA transiently reduced RM demonstrating the presence of GABAA receptors (GABAARs). However, IGABA was mainly not contaminated by GABAAR-mediated currents as RM changes vanished shortly after GABA application. In both regions, IGABA was stronger than IGly. Furthermore, in HC the IGABA/IGly ratio was larger compared to IC. Taken together, our results demonstrate that astrocytes are heterogeneous across and within distinct brain areas. Furthermore, we could show that the capacity for glycine and GABA uptake varies between both brain regions
MuPix7 - A fast monolithic HV-CMOS pixel chip for Mu3e
The MuPix7 chip is a monolithic HV-CMOS pixel chip, thinned down to 50 \mu m.
It provides continuous self-triggered, non-shuttered readout at rates up to 30
Mhits/chip of 3x3 mm^2 active area and a pixel size of 103x80 \mu m^2. The hit
efficiency depends on the chosen working point. Settings with a power
consumption of 300 mW/cm^2 allow for a hit efficiency >99.5%. A time resolution
of 14.2 ns (Gaussian sigma) is achieved. Latest results from 2016 test beam

Deep phenotyping of the unselected COPSAC2010 birth cohort study
BACKGROUND: We hypothesize that perinatal exposures, in particular the human microbiome and maternal nutrition during pregnancy, interact with the genetic predisposition to cause an abnormal immune modulation in early life towards a trajectory to chronic inflammatory diseases such as asthma and others. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to explore these interactions by conducting a longitudinal study in an unselected cohort of pregnant women and their offspring with emphasis on deep clinical phenotyping, exposure assessment, and biobanking. Exposure assessments focus on the human microbiome. Nutritional intervention during pregnancy in randomized controlled trials are included in the study to prevent disease and to be able to establish causal relationships. METHODS: Pregnant women from eastern Denmark were invited during 2008–2010 to a novel unselected ‘COPSAC(2010)’ cohort. The women visited the clinic during pregnancy weeks 24 and 36. Their children were followed at the clinic with deep phenotyping and collection of biological samples at nine regular visits until the age of 3 and at acute symptoms. Randomized controlled trials of high‐dose vitamin D and fish oil supplements were conducted during pregnancy, and a trial of azithromycin for acute lung symptoms was conducted in the children with recurrent wheeze. RESULTS: Seven hundred and thirty‐eight mothers were recruited from week 24 of gestation, and 700 of their children were included in the birth cohort. The cohort has an over‐representation of atopic parents. The participant satisfaction was high and the adherence equally high with 685 children (98%) attending the 1 year clinic visit and 667 children (95%) attending the 2 year clinic visit. CONCLUSIONS: The COPSAC(2010) birth cohort study provides longitudinal clinical follow‐up with highly specific end‐points, exposure assessments, and biobanking. The cohort has a high adherence rate promising strong data to elucidate the interaction between genomics and the exposome in perinatal life leading to lifestyle‐related chronic inflammatory disorders such as asthma
Upgrading the beam telescopes at the DESY II Test Beam Facility
The DESY II Test Beam Facility is a key infrastructure for modern high energy physics detector development, providing particles with a small momentum spread in a range from 1 to 6 GeV to user groups e.g. from the LHC experiments and Belle II as well as generic detector R&D. Beam telescopes are provided in all three test beam areas as precise tracking reference without time stamping, with triggered readout and a readout time of >115 s . If the highest available rates are used, multiple particles are traversing the telescopes within one readout frame, thus creating ambiguities that cannot be resolved without additional timing layers. Several upgrades are currently investigated and tested: Firstly, a fast monolithic pixel sensor, the TelePix, to provide precise track timing and triggering on a region of interest is proposed to overcome this limitation. The TelePix is a 180 nm HV-CMOS sensor that has been developed jointly by DESY, KIT and the University of Heidelberg and designed at KIT. In this publication, the performance evaluation is presented: The difference between two amplifier designs is evaluated. A high hit detection efficiency of above 99.9 % combined with a time resolution of below 4 ns at negligible pixel noise rates is determined. Finally, the digital hit output to provide region of interest triggering is evaluated and shows a short absolute delay with respect to a traditional trigger scintillator as well as an excellent time resolution. Secondly, a fast LGAD plane has been proposed to provide a time resolution of a few 10 ps, which is foreseen to drastically improve the timing performance of the telescope. Time resolutions of below 70 ps have been determined in collaboration with the University of California, Santa Barbara
MuPix and ATLASPix -- Architectures and Results
High Voltage Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (HV-MAPS) are based on a
commercial High Voltage CMOS process and collect charge by drift inside a
reversely biased diode. HV-MAPS represent a promising technology for future
pixel tracking detectors. Two recent developments are presented. The MuPix has
a continuous readout and is being developed for the Mu3e experiment whereas the
ATLASPix is being developed for LHC applications with a triggered readout. Both
variants have a fully monolithic design including state machines, clock
circuitries and serial drivers. Several prototypes and design variants were
characterised in the lab and in testbeam campaigns to measure efficiencies,
noise, time resolution and radiation tolerance. Results from recent MuPix and
ATLASPix prototypes are presented and prospects for future improvements are
