Does woman + a network = career progression?
Question: I am an ambitious and talented junior manager who has recently been hired by FAB plc, a large multinational company. I am also a woman and, as part of my induction pack, have received an invitation to join FABFemmes - the in-company women's network. I don't think my gender has been an obstacle to my success thus far and so I don't really feel the need to join. But on the other hand I don't want to turn my back on something that might offer me a useful source of contacts to help me advance up the career ladder. What would be the best thing to do? - Ms Ambitious, UK
Data base management system analysis and performance testing with respect to NASA requirements
Several candidate Data Base Management Systems (DBM's) that could support the NASA End-to-End Data System's Integrated Data Base Management System (IDBMS) Project, later rescoped and renamed the Packet Management System (PMS) were evaluated. The candidate DBMS systems which had to run on the Digital Equipment Corporation VAX 11/780 computer system were ORACLE, SEED and RIM. Oracle and RIM are both based on the relational data base model while SEED employs a CODASYL network approach. A single data base application which managed stratospheric temperature profiles was studied. The primary reasons for using this application were an insufficient volume of available PMS-like data, a mandate to use actual rather than simulated data, and the abundance of available temperature profile data
Results of data base management system parameterized performance testing related to GSFC scientific applications
The results of a variety of tests designed to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of several commercially available data base management system (DBMS) products compatible with the Digital Equipment Corporation VAX 11/780 computer system are summarized. The tests were performed on the INGRES, ORACLE, and SEED DBMS products employing applications that were similar to scientific applications under development by NASA. The objectives of this testing included determining the strength and weaknesses of the candidate systems, performance trade-offs of various design alternatives and the impact of some installation and environmental (computer related) influences

Probing Solar Convection
In the solar convection zone acoustic waves are scattered by turbulent sound
speed fluctuations. In this paper the scattering of waves by convective cells
is treated using Rytov's technique. Particular care is taken to include
diffraction effects which are important especially for high-degree modes that
are confined to the surface layers of the Sun. The scattering leads to damping
of the waves and causes a phase shift. Damping manifests itself in the width of
the spectral peak of p-mode eigenfrequencies. The contribution of scattering to
the line widths is estimated and the sensitivity of the results on the assumed
spectrum of the turbulence is studied. Finally the theoretical predictions are
compared with recently measured line widths of high-degree modes.Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, accepted by MNRA
Nutritional intakes of highly trained adolescent swimmers before, during, and after a national lockdown in the COVID-19 pandemic
Strict lockdown measures were introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused mass disruption to adolescent swimmersâ daily routines. To measure how lockdown impacted nutritional practices in this cohort, three-day photograph food diaries were analysed at three time points: before (January), during (April), and after (September) the first UK lockdown. Thirteen swimmers (aged 15 ± 1 years) from a high-performance swimming club submitted satisfactory food diaries at all time points. During lockdown, lower amounts of energy (45.3 ± 9.8 vs. 31.1 ± 7.7 kcalâkg BMâday-1, p0.05), despite fewer training hours being completed (15.0 ± 1.4 vs. 19.1 ± 2.2 hâweek-1, p<0.001). These findings highlight the ability of adolescent swimmers to alter their nutrition based on their changing training circumstances when receiving sport nutrition support. However, some individuals displayed signs of suboptimal nutrition during lockdown that were not corrected once training resumed. This warrants future research to develop interactive education workshops that maintain focus and motivation towards optimal nutrition practices in isolated periods away from training
Dynamical q-deformation in quantum theory and the stochastic limit
A model of particle interacting with quantum field is considered. The model
includes as particular cases the polaron model and non-relativistic quantum
electrodynamics. We show that the field operators obey q-commutation relations
with q depending on time. After the stochastic (or van Hove) limit, due to the
nonlinearity, the atomic and field degrees of freedom become entangled in the
sense that the field and the atomic variables no longer commute but give rise
to a new algebra with new commutation relations replacing the Boson ones. This
new algebra allows to give a simple proof of the fact that the non crossing
half-planar diagrams give the dominating contribution in a weak coupling regime
and to calculate explicitly the correlations associated to the new algebra. The
above results depend crucially on the fact that we do not introduce any dipole
or multipole approximation.Comment: Latex, 11 page
Adiabatic elimination in quantum stochastic models
We consider a physical system with a coupling to bosonic reservoirs via a
quantum stochastic differential equation. We study the limit of this model as
the coupling strength tends to infinity. We show that in this limit the
solution to the quantum stochastic differential equation converges strongly to
the solution of a limit quantum stochastic differential equation. In the
limiting dynamics the excited states are removed and the ground states couple
directly to the reservoirs.Comment: 17 pages, no figures, corrected mistake
