Observation of a cascaded process in intracavity terahertz optical parametric oscillators based on lithium niobate
Cascaded difference frequency generation has been observed in intracavity optical parametric oscillators based on bulk lithium niobate and producing nanosecond pulses of terahertz radiation. Two idler waves are generated, namely: the primary idler wave associated with the parametric down conversion process itself; and a secondary idler wave, due to difference frequency generation. Experimental investigations of the frequency, temporal evolution, propagation direction, intensity, phase matching and oscillation threshold of the generated down-converted waves are reported. The overall generation efficiency for the terahertz radiation is enhanced, thereby overcoming the Manley-Rowe limit. Advantages of the present approach over schemes based on periodically poled lithium niobate are identified.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Advanced turboprop noise prediction: Development of a code at NASA Langley based on recent theoretical results
The development of a high speed propeller noise prediction code at Langley Research Center is described. The code utilizes two recent acoustic formulations in the time domain for subsonic and supersonic sources. The structure and capabilities of the code are discussed. Grid size study for accuracy and speed of execution on a computer is also presented. The code is tested against an earlier Langley code. Considerable increase in accuracy and speed of execution are observed. Some examples of noise prediction of a high speed propeller for which acoustic test data are available are given. A brisk derivation of formulations used is given in an appendix
Performance criteria guideline for three explosion protection methods of electrical equipment rated up to 15,000 volts AC
The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is reviewing explosion protection methods for use in gassy coal mines. This performance criteria guideline is an evaluation of three explosion protection methods of machines electrically powered with voltages up to 15,000 volts ac. A sufficient amount of basic research has been accomplished to verify that the explosion proof and pressurized enclosure methods can provide adequate explosion protection with the present state of the art up to 15,000 volts ac. This routine application of the potted enclosure as a stand alone protection method requires further investigation or development in order to clarify performance criteria and verification certification requirements. An extensive literature search, a series of high voltage tests, and a design evaluation of the three explosion protection methods indicate that the explosion proof, pressurized, and potted enclosures can all be used to enclose up to 15,000 volts ac
Mineralogy and Surface Composition of Asteroids
Methods to constrain the surface mineralogy of asteroids have seen
considerable development during the last decade with advancement in laboratory
spectral calibrations and validation of our interpretive methodologies by
spacecraft rendezvous missions. This has enabled the accurate identification of
several meteorite parent bodies in the main asteroid belt and helped constrain
the mineral chemistries and abundances in ordinary chondrites and basaltic
achondrites. With better quantification of spectral effects due to temperature,
phase angle, and grain size, systematic discrepancies due to non-compositional
factors can now be virtually eliminated for mafic silicate-bearing asteroids.
Interpretation of spectrally featureless asteroids remains a challenge. This
paper presents a review of all mineralogical interpretive tools currently in

Intrabodies Binding the Proline-Rich Domains of Mutant Huntingtin Increase Its Turnover and Reduce Neurotoxicity
Although expanded polyglutamine (polyQ) repeats are inherently toxic, causing at least nine neurodegenerative diseases, the protein context determines which neurons are affected. The polyQ expansion that causes Huntington's disease (HD) is in the first exon (HDx-1) of huntingtin (Htt). However, other parts of the protein, including the 17 N-terminal amino acids and two proline (polyP) repeat domains, regulate the toxicity of mutant Htt. The role of the P-rich domain that is flanked by the polyP domains has not been explored. Using highly specific intracellular antibodies (intrabodies), we tested various epitopes for their roles in HDx-1 toxicity, aggregation, localization, and turnover. Three domains in the P-rich region (PRR) of HDx-1 are defined by intrabodies: MW7 binds the two polyP domains, and Happ1 and Happ3, two new intrabodies, bind the unique, P-rich epitope located between the two polyP epitopes. We find that the PRR-binding intrabodies, as well as VL12.3, which binds the N-terminal 17 aa, decrease the toxicity and aggregation of HDx-1, but they do so by different mechanisms. The PRR-binding intrabodies have no effect on Htt localization, but they cause a significant increase in the turnover rate of mutant Htt, which VL12.3 does not change. In contrast, expression of VL12.3 increases nuclear Htt. We propose that the PRR of mutant Htt regulates its stability, and that compromising this pathogenic epitope by intrabody binding represents a novel therapeutic strategy for treating HD. We also note that intrabody binding represents a powerful tool for determining the function of protein epitopes in living cells
Relic Neutrinos and Z-Resonance Mechanism for Highest-Energy Cosmic Rays
The origin of the highest-energy cosmic rays remains elusive. The decay of a
superheavy particle (X) into an ultra-energetic neutrino which scatters from a
relic (anti-)neutrino at the Z-resonance has attractive features. Given the
necessary X mass of GeV, the required lifetime,
y, renders model-building a serious challenge but three logical possibilities
are considered: (i) X is a Higgs scalar in SU(15) belonging to high-rank
representation, leading to {\it power}-enhanced lifetime; (ii) a global X
quantum number has {\it exponentially}-suppressed symmetry-breaking by
instantons; and (iii) with additional space dimension(s) localisation of X
within the real-world brane leads to {\it gaussian} decay suppression, the most

Limestone As a buffering Agent in High-Concentrate Diets
In recent years, there has been evidence indicating that limestone in excess of normal requirement levels for calcium has beneficial effects for ruminants. Research at this station has shown that limestone supplementation is effective in preventing phosphatic urinary calculi formation in ruminants when fed at higher levels than normally recommended. Work at other stations has shown positive effects on weight gain from limestone added to highconcentrate diets, which was attributed to buffering action within the digestive tract. In short-term finishing periods, buffer supplementation may help ruminants adapt to high-grain diets if roughage has been their major feedstuff in the past. Graded levels of limestone were fed in this experiment to determine beneficial effects in protecting lambs from the effects of rumen acidosis during an extremely short adaptation period and to determine the optimum level of supplementation needed to improve performance during the longer term finishing period
