The Ethosophy of the Grizzly Man: Timothy Treadwell\u27s Three Ethologies

This paper explores the ethical appropriateness and significance of Timothy Treadwell’s life among the bears and foxes of Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve. In an attempt to reveal the formative and transformative aspects of Treadwell’s project, I rely upon an ethological framework developed by Matthew Calarco that moves beyond the narrow conception of ethology as a scientific practice aimed at systematic and rigorous documentation of the quantifiable aspects of animal behavior. While many people might be hesitant to conceive of Treadwell’s project as an ethological one, I hope to illuminate the ways in which his life among bears and foxes might be understood as emblematic of a kind of amateur ethology and ethological philosophy (i.e., ethosophy) and then use this understanding of Treadwell’s work to give shape to the disclosive, generative, and transformative aspects of such practice. I then suggest that ethological experiments of this sort, while subjecting practitioners to certain risks, are vitally important for understanding human-animal relationships, reducing conflict between humans and other predator species, and generating systemic cultural changes in view of other animals

Surface Energy in Cold Asymmetrical Fermion Superfluids

We derive the energy of the surface between the normal and superfluid components of a mixed phase of a system composed of two particle species with different densities. The surface energy is obtained by the integration of the free energy density in the interface between the two phases. We show that the mixed phase remains as the favored ground state over the gapless phase in weak coupling. It was first used clinically by Laborit and Hugenard in 1951 in relation to anaesthetics and' later (1953) by ,Delay and Denikerl in psychiatry. It has been adopted generally for virtually every known psychiatric illness and varying opinions have been expressed concerning its efficacy. At the Oranje Hospital it has been in active use for the past 8 months with varying-sometimes startling-results. “You don’t wanna teach little kids about climate change”: Beliefs and Barriers to Sustainability Education in Early Childhood

To support a sustainable planet, preschools need to engage young children with sustainability education. In the United States of America (USA), nature-based preschool programs are likely to promote environmental science and nature education, given their outdoor curricula, but very little is known about how these programs might also cultivate sustainability education. The purpose of the present study was to investigate nature-based preschool teachers’ craft knowledge (Grimmett & MacKinnon, 1992) about sustainability education within curricula as they presently exist. We interviewed 22 early childhood educators and administrators across nine early childhood nature-based education centers in the Northeastern United States. Following Davis\u27 (2010) differentiation of education in, about, and for the environment, we found that most participants promoted activities in the environment, such as children spending time outdoors in the woods. Educators reasoned that they focused on promoting in-nature based activities because they believed that caring for and loving nature were foundational to promoting sustainability practices. Also, the educators promoted simple everyday pro-environmental behaviors, such as reusing containers, as they believed such acts lead to lifelong sustainable behaviors. Ultimately, we found that almost all of the teachers who participated in our study wanted to include sustainability education within their pedagogical approaches, and they did so by focusing on “every-day sustainability practices,” but felt they could not engage in more ethically-driven sustainability practices due to curricular and parental barriers

An exceptionally favourable stratigraphic and chronologic context concerning the Miocene series in Lisbon allows us to stress that there are two successive data as far as the Proboscideans' immigration into western Europe is concerned: firstly, that of Gomphotheres, and later that of Deinotheres. The study of a Langhian (in age) tusk has shown that Deinotherinm havaricum was still present then. The time span of this species could be accurately recognized. A discussion on the genus Deinotherium is presented, as well as its occurrence in Portugal and on its ecologic meaning

This species occurs in the Lisbon area (in the upper part of the lower Miocene, ca.18 to 17.6 Ma) in a very accurate stratigraphic framing (age, lithostratigraphic, climatic and palaeoecologic control being most complete). Some mandibular dental size variation, sex characters, functional interpretation, ecology and predation, chemical corrosion, and extinction are discussed
