Motivations for Mobile Devices: Uses and Gratifications for M-Commerce

Uses and Gratifications is a media use paradigm useful for diagnosing user motivations for computer and technology usage. This study documents the exploratory processes of developing a mobile device uses and gratifications motivational inventory, beginning with qualitative inquiry and proceeding through exploratory analysis of motivational dimensions for usage. Results indicate that mobile device uses and gratifications are mainly centered on the speed and connectivity with which associated data and information services are available for busy technology users

IP Teleconferencing in the Wired Classroom: Gratifications for Distance Education

Students have various motivations for participating and engaging in courses offered by distance education technologies over the Internet. While many of these courses have traditionally been Web-based asynchronous offerings, enhanced technology and reduced costs of IP-enabled teleconferenced synchronous course sections are encouraging more institutions to adopt this effective option for delivering important content to several physical locations at the same time. This study examines differential student motivations for participating in local and distance teleconferenced sections of an information technology course, enabled by Internet-based videoconferencing. This research lends support to three hypotheses concerning technologymediated distance education systems. First, that traditional college age students prefer the local section of a distance education course on measures of satisfaction with the teleconferenced course, while non-traditional (age 25-34) students do not share this preference. Second, that older, non-traditional, students rate a distant course higher for satisfaction than do 18-24 year old students. Finally, that the social presence advantages of Internet-enabled teleconferencing appeal more to socially-oriented students than they do to students with a low social orientation. An unexpected, but serendipitous, finding of this research was that the group that could likely derive the greatest benefits from Internet-enabled distance education - older, non-traditional students - also may be more comfortable with the use of that technology, based on their higher reported degrees of selfperceived technical competency

Hairy tongue (lingua villosa) is a commonly observed condition of defective desquamation of the filiform papillae that results from a variety of precipitating factors. [1] The condition is most frequently referred to as black hairy tongue (lingua villosa nigra); however, hairy tongue may also appear brown, white, green, pink, or any of a variety of hues depending on the specific etiology and secondary factors (eg, use of colored mouthwashes, breath mints, candies). Correlated charge polarization in a chain of coupled quantum dots

Coherent charge transfer in a linear array of tunnel-coupled quantum dots, electrostatically coupled to external gates, is investigated using the Bethe ansatz for a symmetrically biased Hubbard chain. Charge polarization in this correlated system is shown to proceed via two distinct processes: formation of bound states in the metallic phase, and charge transfer processes corresponding to a superposition of antibound states at opposite ends of the chain in the Mott-insulating phase. The polarizability in the insulating phase of the chain exhibits a universal scaling behavior, while the polarization charge in the metallic phase of the model is shown to be quantized in units of $e/2$.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

Standardization and the Impacts of Voluntary Program Participation: Evidence from Environmental Auditing

We explore how limits to our insight about the underlying decision-making structure of firms may affect the conclusions we draw about the likely impacts of participation in voluntary environmental programs. We develop a theoretical model to examine the conditions under which a multi-facility firm chooses to employ a standardized adoption policy for a voluntary program. We test this model empirically using a firm-level dataset on the adoption of a voluntary environmental auditing program and find that, consistent with the theoretical model, a standardized auditing outcome is less likely among firms with more heterogeneous portfolios of facilities. We also examine the effect of environmental auditing on facility compliance using both firm-level and facility-level controls. We find that the estimated effect depends on whether or not measures that proxy for firm incentives for standardization are included in the analysis. These findings suggest caution in drawing conclusions on the effectiveness of voluntary programs in improving compliance based on analyses that assume standardization on the part of the firm

Romanticism and Periodisation: A Roundtable

"‘Eternity is in love with the productions of time’. This original edited volume takes William Blake’s aphorism as a basis to explore how British Romantic literature creates its own sense of time. It considers Romantic poetry as embedded in and reflecting on the march of time, regarding it not merely as a reaction to the course of events between the late-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries, but also as a form of creative engagement with history in the making. The authors offer a comprehensive overview of the question of time from a literary perspective, applying a diverse range of critical approaches to Romantic authors from William Blake and Percy Shelley to John Clare and Samuel Rodgers. Close readings uncover fresh insights into these authors and their works, including Frankenstein, the most familiar of Romantic texts. Revising current thinking about periodisation, the authors explore how the Romantic poetics of time bears witness to the ruptures and dislocations at work within chronological time. They consider an array of topics, such as ecological time, futurity, operatic time, or the a-temporality of Venice. As well as surveying the Romantic canon’s evolution over time, these essays approach it as a phenomenon unfolding across national borders. Romantic authors are compared with American or European counterparts including Beethoven, Irving, Nietzsche and Beckett. Romanticism and Time will be of great value to literary scholars and students working in Romantic Studies. It will be of further interest to philosophers and historians working on the connections between philosophy, history and literature during the nineteenth century.

A note on density correlations in the half-filled Hubbard model

We consider density-density correlations in the one-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling. On intuitive grounds one might expect them to exhibit an exponential decay. However, as has been noted recently, this is not obvious from the Bethe Ansatz/conformal field theory (BA/CFT) approach. We show that by supplementing the BA/CFT analysis with simple symmetry arguments one can easily prove that correlations of the lattice density operators decay exponentially.Comment: 3 pages, RevTe

The Escape Problem in a Classical Field Theory With Two Coupled Fields

We introduce and analyze a system of two coupled partial differential equations with external noise. The equations are constructed to model transitions of monovalent metallic nanowires with non-axisymmetric intermediate or end states, but also have more general applicability. They provide a rare example of a system for which an exact solution of nonuniform stationary states can be found. We find a transition in activation behavior as the interval length on which the fields are defined is varied. We discuss several applications to physical problems.Comment: 24 page
