Performance of alumina-supported Pt catalysts in an electron-beam-sustained CO2 laser amplifier
The performance of an alumina-supported Pt catalyst system used to maintain the gas purity in an electron-beam-sustained (636) isotope CO2 laser amplifier has been tested. The system characteristics using the two-zone, parallel flow reactor were determined for both continuous- and end-of-day reactor operation using on-line mass spectrometric sampling. The laser amplifier was run with an energy loading of typically 110 J-l/atm and an electron-beam current of 4 mA/sq cm. With these conditions and a pulse repetition frequency of 10 Hz for up to 10,000 shots, increases on the order of 100 ppm O2 were observed with the purifier on and 150 ppm with it off. The 1/e time recovery time was found to be approximately 75 minutes
The rings of n-dimensional polytopes
Points of an orbit of a finite Coxeter group G, generated by n reflections
starting from a single seed point, are considered as vertices of a polytope
(G-polytope) centered at the origin of a real n-dimensional Euclidean space. A
general efficient method is recalled for the geometric description of G-
polytopes, their faces of all dimensions and their adjacencies. Products and
symmetrized powers of G-polytopes are introduced and their decomposition into
the sums of G-polytopes is described. Several invariants of G-polytopes are
found, namely the analogs of Dynkin indices of degrees 2 and 4, anomaly numbers
and congruence classes of the polytopes. The definitions apply to
crystallographic and non-crystallographic Coxeter groups. Examples and
applications are shown.Comment: 24 page
Total synthesis of the post-translationally modified polyazole peptide antibiotic plantazolicin A
The power of rhodium carbene methodology in chemistry is demonstrated by the synthesis of a structurally complex polyazole antibiotic. Plantazolicin A, a novel soil bacterium metabolite, comprises a linear array of 10 five-membered rings in two pentacyclic regions that derive from ribosomal peptide synthesis followed by extensive post-translational modification. The compound possesses potent antimicrobial activity, and is selectively active against the anthrax causing organism. A conceptually different synthesis of plantazolicin A is reported in which the key steps are the use of rhodium(II)-catalyzed reactions of diazocarbonyl compounds to generate up to six of the seven oxazole rings of the antibiotic. NMR Spectroscopic studies and molecular modeling, reveal a likely dynamic hairpin conformation with a hinge region around the two isoleucine residues. The compound has modest activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

The Arctic is facing higher summer temperatures and extreme weather events are becoming more common. We used Illumina RNA-Seq to analyse cDNA libraries for differential expression of genes from leaves of ecologically well-characterized ecotypes of tussock cottongrass found along a latitudinal gradient in the Alaskan Arctic and transplanted into a common garden. Plant sampling was performed on a typical summer day and during an extreme heat event. We obtained a de novo assembly that contained 423,353 unigenes. There were 363 unigenes up-regulated and 1,117 down-regulated among all ecotypes examined during the extreme heat event. Of these, 26 HSP unigenes had >log2-fold up-regulation. Several TFs associated with heat stress in previous studies were identified that had >log2-fold up- or down-regulation during the extreme heat event (e.g., DREB, NAC). There was consistent variation in DEGs among ecotypes, but not specifically related to whether plants originated from taiga or tundra ecosystems. As the climate changes it is essential to determine ecotypic diversity at the genomic level, especially for widespread species that impact ecosystem function. We thank Thomas Parker for providing crucial logistical support at Toolik Field station and Darrel Dech, Stephen Turner, and Mayra Melendez for assistance in field sampling. On E-functions of Semisimple Lie Groups
We develop and describe continuous and discrete transforms of class functions
on a compact semisimple, but not simple, Lie group as their expansions into
series of special functions that are invariant under the action of the even
subgroup of the Weyl group of . We distinguish two cases of even Weyl groups
-- one is the direct product of even Weyl groups of simple components of ,
the second is the full even Weyl group of . The problem is rather simple in
two dimensions. It is much richer in dimensions greater than two -- we describe
in detail transforms of semisimple Lie groups of rank 3.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
Affine extension of noncrystallographic Coxeter groups and quasicrystals
Unique affine extensions H^{\aff}_2, H^{\aff}_3 and H^{\aff}_4 are
determined for the noncrystallographic Coxeter groups , and .
They are used for the construction of new mathematical models for quasicrystal
fragments with 10-fold symmetry. The case of H^{\aff}_2 corresponding to
planar point sets is discussed in detail. In contrast to the cut-and-project
scheme we obtain by construction finite point sets, which grow with a model
specific growth parameter.Comment: (27 pages, to appear in J. Phys. A
