    This article suggests that the neofunctionalist theoretical legacy left by Ernst B. Haas is somewhat richer and more prescient than many contemporary discussants allow. The article develops an argument for routine and detailed re-reading of the corpus of neofunctionalist work (and that of Haas in particular), not only to disabuse contemporary students and scholars of the normally static and stylized reading that discussion of the theory provokes, but also to suggest that the conceptual repertoire of neofunctionalism is able to speak directly to current EU studies and comparative regionalism. Neofunctionalism is situated in its social scientific context before the theory's supposed erroneous reliance on the concept of 'spillover' is discussed critically. A case is then made for viewing Haas's neofunctionalism as a dynamic theory that not only corresponded to established social scientific norms, but did so in ways that were consistent with disciplinary openness and pluralism

    One step multiderivative methods for first order ordinary differential equations

    A family of one-step multiderivative methods based on Padé approximants to the exponential function is developed. The methods are extrapolated and analysed for use in PECE mode. Error constants and stability intervals are calculated and the combinations compared with well known linear multi-step combinations and combinations using high accuracy Newton-Cotes quadrature formulas as correctors. w926020

    Association football is now a multi-billion dollar global industry whose emergence spans the post-medieval to the modern world. With its professional roots in late 19th-century industrial Lancashire, stadiums built for the professionalization of football first appear in frequency in the North of England. While many historians of sport focus on consumerism and ‘topophilia’ (attachment to place) regarding these local football grounds, archaeological research that has been conducted on the spectator experience suggests status differentiation within them. Our excavations at Peel Park confirm this impression while also showing a significant afterlife to this stadium, particularly through children’s play

    Theory of exciton-exciton correlation in nonlinear optical response

    We present a systematic theory of Coulomb interaction effects in the nonlinear optical processes in semiconductors using a perturbation series in the exciting laser field. The third-order dynamical response consists of phase-space filling correction, mean-field exciton-exciton interaction, and two-exciton correlation effects expressed as a force-force correlation function. The theory provides a unified description of effects of bound and unbound biexcitons, including memory-effects beyond the Markovian approximation.     The Role of Nonequilibrium Dynamical Screening in Carrier Thermalization

    We investigate the role played by nonequilibrium dynamical screening in the thermalization of carriers in a simplified two-component two-band model of a semiconductor. The main feature of our approach is the theoretically sound treatment of collisions. We abandon Fermi's Golden rule in favor of a nonequilibrium field theoretic formalism as the former is applicable only in the long-time regime. We also introduce the concept of nonequilibrium dynamical screening. The dephasing of excitonic quantum beats as a result of carrier-carrier scattering is brought out. At low densities it is found that the dephasing times due to carrier-carrier scattering is in picoseconds and not femtoseconds, in agreement with experiments. The polarization dephasing rates are computed as a function of the excited carrier density and it is found that the dephasing rate for carrier-carrier scattering is proportional to the carrier density at ultralow densities. The scaling relation is sublinear at higher densities, which enables a comparison with experiment.Comment: Revised version with additional refs. 12 pages, figs. available upon request; Submitted to Phys.     Effective Hamiltonian for Excitons with Spin Degrees of Freedom

    Starting from the conventional electron-hole Hamiltonian Heh{\cal H}_{eh}, we derive an effective Hamiltonian H~1s\tilde{\cal H}_{1s} for 1s1s excitons with spin degrees of freedom. The Hamiltonian describes optical processes close to the exciton resonance for the case of weak excitation. We show that straightforward bosonization of Heh{\cal H}_{eh} does not give the correct form of H~1s\tilde{\cal H}_{1s}, which we obtain by a projection onto the subspace spanned by the 1s1s excitons. The resulting relaxation and renormalization terms generate an interaction between excitons with opposite spin. Moreover, exciton-exciton repulsive interaction is greatly reduced by the renormalization. The agreement of the present theory with the experiment supports the validity of the description of a fermionic system by bosonic fields in two dimensions.Comment: 12 pages, no figures, RevTe

    A theory-based approach to understanding condom errors and problems reported by men attending an STI clinic

    The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2008 Springer VerlagWe employed the information–motivation–behavioral skills (IMB) model to guide an investigation of correlates for correct condom use among 278 adult (18–35 years old) male clients attending a sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic. An anonymous questionnaire aided by a CD-recording of the questions was administered. Linear Structural Relations Program was used to conduct path analyses of the hypothesized IMB model. Parameter estimates showed that while information did not directly affect behavioral skills, it did have a direct (negative) effect on condom use errors. Motivation had a significant direct (positive) effect on behavioral skills and a significant indirect (positive) effect on condom use errors through behavioral skills. Behavioral skills had a direct (negative) effect on condom use errors. Among men attending a public STI clinic, these findings suggest brief, clinic-based, safer sex programs for men who have sex with women should incorporate activities to convey correct condom use information, instill motivation to use condoms correctly, and directly enhance men’s behavioral skills for correct use of condoms

    Probabilistic Estimation of Site Specific Fault Displacements

    The College of the Redwoods (CR) located near Eureka, California would like to upgrade a series of existing buildings that are unfortunately located on secondary faults associated with the active Little Salmon Fault (LSF) zone. In the early 1990’s a deterministic value of the maximum dip-slip displacement that had occurred on one of these secondary faults located beneath the southeast building corner of the former library was measured to be 1.7 feet. This displacement was resolved into approximately 1.5 feet horizontal offset and 0.8 feet of vertical offset, based on the secondary fault plane dip. Geologically, it has not been possible to establish the actual dates of the occurrence of the displacements on the observed faults, therefore it was assumed that they all had occurred within the last 11,000 years. The structural engineer for the project has indicated that it was not possible to design for the observed ground displacement of 1.7 feet. This limited study was undertaken to assess the variation of ground displacements that were observed over the area of ground occupied by CR’s Administration, Science, and former Library buildings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reasonableness of using a deterministically determined maximum value of displacement in estimating, and designing mitigations for, the structural response, or whether a probabilistic approach could be utilized. The only data available within the limited time frame allowed for the study was from a series of trench logs made as part of a project for locating building sites on the campus in the early 1990’s. As a first step the frequency distributions of both horizontal and vertical displacements located in a volume of soil comprising the area occupied by the above buildings to a depth of 14 feet were examined. The 14 feet was the maximum depth of the trenches used to provide data for the study. Probability density functions (PDF) versus displacements were developed based on the frequency distributions. The area under the PDF curves between given displacement intervals represents the probability of occurrence (POC) of that displacement. A cumulative probability of occurrence for a displacement interval can be determined by adding the individual POC’s. Based on this it was estimated that a horizontal displacement of ≀ 1.0 foot has a probability of 89% of occurring in the next 11,000 years at the site. In contrast, a vertical displacement of ≀ 1.0 foot has a probability of 88% probability of occurrence
