Spectrum of the gamma-ray diffuse component observed from HEAO-1
The spectrum of the diffuse X and gamma ray background was measured between 15 keV and 4 MeV with the scintillation detectors aboard the HEAO 1 satellite. The apertures of the detectors were modulated on time scales of hours and the difference in counting rates measured the diffuse component flux. The observed spectrum is presented and compared with other measurements. At least two components are indicated, one below -100 keV and the other above. Possible origins are discussed
Strong electron correlations in cobalt valence tautomers
We have examined cobalt based valence tautomer molecules such as
Co(SQ)(phen) using density functional theory (DFT) and variational
configuration interaction (VCI) approaches based upon a model Hamiltonian. Our
DFT results extend earlier work by finding a reduced total energy gap (order
0.6 eV) between high temperature and low temperature states when we fully relax
the coordinates (relative to experimental ones). Futhermore we demonstrate that
the charge transfer picture based upon formal valence arguments succeeds
qualitatively while failing quantitatively due to strong covalency between the
Co 3 orbitals and ligand orbitals. With the VCI approach, we argue that
the high temperature, high spin phase is strongly mixed valent, with about 30 %
admixture of Co(III) into the predominantly Co(II) ground state. We confirm
this mixed valence through a fit to the XANES spectra. Moreover, the strong
electron correlations of the mixed valent phase provide an energy lowering of
about 0.2-0.3 eV of the high temperature phase relative to the low temperature
one. Finally, we use the domain model to account for the extraordinarily large
entropy and enthalpy values associated with the transition.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J. Chem. Phy
Spinor Dynamics in an Antiferromagnetic Spin-1 Condensate
We observe coherent spin oscillations in an antiferromagnetic spin-1
Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium. The variation of the spin oscillations with
magnetic field shows a clear signature of nonlinearity, in agreement with
theory, which also predicts anharmonic oscillations near a critical magnetic
field. Measurements of the magnetic phase diagram agree with predictions made
in the approximation of a single spatial mode. The oscillation period yields
the best measurement to date of the sodium spin-dependent interaction
coefficient, determining that the difference between the sodium spin-dependent
s-wave scattering lengths is Bohr radii.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. Changes: added reference, minor correction
Dynamics of a deformable body in a fast flowing soap film
We study the behavior of an elastic loop embedded in a flowing soap film.
This deformable loop is wetted into the film and is held fixed at a single
point against the oncoming flow. We interpret this system as a two-dimensional
flexible body interacting in a two-dimensional flow. This coupled
fluid-structure system shows bistability, with both stationary and oscillatory
states. In its stationary state, the loop remains essentially motionless and
its wake is a von K\'arm\'an vortex street. In its oscillatory state, the loop
sheds two vortex dipoles, or more complicated vortical structures, within each
oscillation period. We find that the oscillation frequency of the loop is
linearly proportional to the flow velocity, and that the measured Strouhal
numbers can be separated based on wake structure
Standing wave oscillations in binary mixture convection: from onset via symmetry breaking to period doubling into chaos
Oscillatory solution branches of the hydrodynamic field equations describing
convection in the form of a standing wave (SW) in binary fluid mixtures heated
from below are determined completely for several negative Soret coefficients.
Galerkin as well as finite-difference simulations were used. They were
augmented by simple control methods to obtain also unstable SW states. For
sufficiently negative Soret coefficients unstable SWs bifurcate subcritically
out of the quiescent conductive state. They become stable via a saddle-node
bifurcation when lateral phase pinning is exerted. Eventually their invariance
under time-shift by half a period combined with reflexion at midheight of the
fluid layer gets broken. Thereafter they terminate by undergoing a
period-doubling cascade into chaos
Bias Dependent 1/f Conductivity Fluctuations in Low-Doped LaCaMnO Manganite Single Crystals
Low frequency noise in current biased LaCaMnO single
crystals has been investigated in a wide temperature range from 79 K to 290 K.
Despite pronounced changes in magnetic properties and dissipation mechanisms of
the sample with changing temperature, the noise spectra were found to be always
of the 1/f type and their intensity (except the lowest temperature studied)
scaled as a square of the bias. At liquid nitrogen temperatures and under bias
exceeding some threshold value, the behavior of the noise deviates from the
quasi-equilibrium modulation noise and starts to depend in a non monotonic way
on bias. It has been verified that the observed noise obeys Dutta and Horn
model of 1/f noise in solids. The appearance of nonequilibrium 1/f noise and
its dependence on bias have been associated with changes in the distribution of
activation energies in the underlying energy landscape. These changes have been
correlated with bias induced changes in the intrinsic tunneling mechanism
dominating dissipation in LaCaMnO at low temperatures.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Physic
Spectroscopic Evidence for Anisotropic S-Wave Pairing Symmetry in MgB2
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of superconducting MgB ( K)
were studied on high-density pellets and c-axis oriented films. The sample
surfaces were chemically etched to remove surface carbonates and hydroxides,
and the data were compared with calculated spectra for all symmetry-allowed
pairing channels. The pairing potential () is best described by an
anisotropic s-wave pairing model, with , where is the angle relative to the
crystalline c-axis, meV, and meV.Comment: 4 pages and 3 figures. Submitted to Physical Review Letters.

Nonequilibrium 1/f Noise in Low-doped Manganite Single Crystals
1/f noise in current biased La0.82Ca0.18MnO3 crystals has been investigated.
The temperature dependence of the noise follows the resistivity changes with
temperature suggesting that resistivity fluctuations constitute a fixed
fraction of the total resistivity, independently of the dissipation mechanism
and magnetic state of the system. The noise scales as a square of the current
as expected for equilibrium resistivity fluctuations. However, at 77 K at bias
exceeding some threshold, the noise intensity starts to decrease with
increasing bias. The appearance of nonequilibrium noise is interpreted in terms
of bias dependent multi-step indirect tunneling.Comment: 4pages, 3figures,APL accepte
Statistics of transition times, phase diffusion and synchronization in periodically driven bistable systems
The statistics of transitions between the metastable states of a periodically
driven bistable Brownian oscillator are investigated on the basis of a
two-state description by means of a master equation with time-dependent rates.
The results are compared with extensive numerical simulations of the Langevin
equation for a sinusoidal driving force. Very good agreement is achieved both
for the counting statistics of the number of transitions and the residence time
distribution of the process in either state. The counting statistics
corroborate in a consistent way the interpretation of stochastic resonance as a
synchronisation phenomenon for a properly defined generalized Rice phase.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure
