    Medium-resolution echelle spectroscopy of pulsating variables and exoplanet host stars with sub-meter telescopes

    Here we present two of our interesting results obtained over the last 18 months from spectroscopic monitoring of binary pulsating stars and exoplanet host stars.     Discovery of the spectroscopic binary nature of the classical Cepheids FN Aql and V1344 Aql

    We present the analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data of two classical Cepheids, FN Aquilae and V1344 Aquilae. Based on the joint treatment of the new and earlier radial velocity data, both Galactic Cepheids have been found to be a member in a spectroscopic binary system. To match the phases of the earlier radial velocity data correctly with the new ones, we also determined the temporal behaviour of the pulsation period of these Cepheids based on all available photometric data. The O-C graph covering about half century shows slight changes in the pulsation period due to stellar evolution for both Cepheids.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publishing in the MNRA

    Scanning tip measurement for identification of point defects

    Self-assembled iron-silicide nanostructures were prepared by reactive deposition epitaxy of Fe onto silicon. Capacitance-voltage, current-voltage, and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) were used to measure the electrical properties of Au/silicon Schottky junctions. Spreading resistance and scanning probe capacitance microscopy (SCM) were applied to measure local electrical properties. Using a preamplifier the sensitivity of DLTS was increased satisfactorily to measure transients of the scanning tip semiconductor junction. In the Fe-deposited area, Fe-related defects dominate the surface layer in about 0.5 μm depth. These defects deteriorated the Schottky junction characteristic. Outside the Fe-deposited area, Fe-related defect concentration was identified in a thin layer near the surface. The defect transients in this area were measured both in macroscopic Schottky junctions and by scanning tip DLTS and were detected by bias modulation frequency dependence in SCM

    An extensive photometric study of the Blazhko RR Lyrae star RZ Lyr

    The analysis of recent, extended multicolour CCD and archive photoelectric, photographic and visual observations has revealed several important properties of RZ Lyr, an RRab-type variable exhibiting large-amplitude Blazhko modulation. On the time-base of \sim110 yr, a strict anticorrelation between the pulsation and modulation period changes is established. The light curve of RZ Lyr shows a remarkable bump on the descending branch in the small-amplitude phase of the modulation, similarly to the light curves of bump Cepheids. We speculate that the stellar structure temporally suits a 4:1 resonance between the periods of the fundamental and one of the higher-order radial modes in this modulation phase. The light-curve variation of RZ Lyr can be correctly fitted with a two-modulation-component solution; the 121 d period of the main modulation is nearly but not exactly four times longer than the period of the secondary modulation component. Using the inverse photometric method, the variations in the pulsation-averaged values of the physical parameters in different phases of both modulation components are determined.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables.     Mg(2)Si(x)Sn(1-x)heterostructures on Si(111) substrate for optoelectronics and thermoelectronics

    Thin (50-90 m) non-doped and doped (by Al atoms) Mg2Sn0.6Si0.4 and Mg(2)Sn(0.4)Si(0.6)films with roughness of 1.9-3.7 nm have been grown by multiple deposition and single annealing at 150 degrees C of multilayers formed by repetition deposition of three-layers (Si-Sn-Mg) on Si(111) p-type wafers with 45 cm resistivity. Transmission electron microscopy has shown that the first forming layer is an epitaxial layer of hex-Mg2Sn(300) on Si(111) substrate with thickness not more than 5-7 nm. Epitaxial relationships: hex-Mg2Sn(300)parallel to Si(111), hex-Mg2Sn[001]parallel to Si[-112] and hex-Mg2Sn[030]parallel to Si[110] have been found for the epitaxial layer. But inclusions of cub-Mg2Si were also observed inside hex-Mg2Sn layer. It was found that the remaining part of the film thickness is in amorphous state and has a layered distribution of major elements: Mg, Sn and Mg without exact chemical composition. It was established by optical spectroscopy data that both type films are semiconductor with undispersed region lower 0.18 eV with n(o) = 3.59 +/- 0.01, but only two direct interband transitions with energies 0.75-0.76 eV and 1.2 eV have been determined. The last interband transition has been confirmed by photoreflectance data at room temperature. Fourier transmittance spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy data have established the formation of stannide, silicide and ternary compositions

    Preferences of Hungarian consumers for quality, access and price attributes of health care services — result of a discrete choice experiment

    In 2010, a household survey was carried out in Hungary among 1037 respondents to study consumer preferences and willingness to pay for health care services. In this paper, we use the data from the discrete choice experiments included in the survey, to elicit the preferences of health care consumers about the choice of health care providers. Regression analysis is used to estimate the effect of the improvement of service attributes (quality, access, and price) on patients’ choice, as well as the differences among the socio-demographic groups. We also estimate the marginal willingness to pay for the improvement in attribute levels by calculating marginal rates of substitution. The results show that respondents from a village or the capital, with low education and bad health status are more driven by the changes in the price attribute when choosing between health care providers. Respondents value the good skills and reputation of the physician and the attitude of the personnel most, followed by modern equipment and maintenance of the office/hospital. Access attributes (travelling and waiting time) are less important. The method of discrete choice experiment is useful to reveal patients’ preferences, and might support the development of an evidence-based and sustainable health policy on patient payments

    The use of the multivariate Principal Response Curve (PRC) for community analysis: a case study on the effects of carbendazim on enchytraeids in Terrestrial Model Ecosystems (TME).

    The effects of the fungicide carbendazim (formulation Derosal®) on enchytraeids were determined in Terrestrial Model Ecosystem (TME) tests. TMEs consisted of intact soil columns (diameter 17.5 cm; length 40 cm) taken from three grassland sites (Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Bangor (Wales, England) and Flörsheim (Germany)) or an arable site (Coimbra (Portugal)). Results for each TME site were evaluated using the multivariate Principal Response Curve (PRC) method.
