    A Color-Magnitude Diagram for a Globular Cluster In the Giant Elliptical Galaxy NGC 5128

    The Hubble Space Telescope has been used to obtain WFPC2 (V,I) photometry for a large sample of stars in the outer halo of the giant elliptical NGC 5128 (d = 4 Mpc). The globular cluster N5128-C44, at the center of the Planetary Camera field, is well enough resolved to permit the construction of a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for it which covers the brightest two magnitudes of the giant branch. The CMD is consistent with that of a normal old, moderately low-metallicity ([Fe/H] = -1.30 globular cluster, distinctly more metal-poor than most of the field halo stars at the same projected location (which average [Fe/H] ~ -0.5). This is the most distant globular cluster in which direct color-magnitude photometry has been achieved to date, and the first one belonging to a giant E galaxy.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, including 5 postscript figures; submitted to Astronomical Journa

    Results of aircraft open-loop tests of an experimental magnetic leader cable system for guidance during roll-out and turnoff

    An experimental magnetic leader cable (MLC) system designed to measure aircraft lateral displacement from centerline and heading relative to centerline during rollout, turnoff, and taxi was tested at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility using NASA's Transport System Research Vehicle (TSRV), a modified B-737. The MLC system consisted of ground equipment that produced a magnetic field about a wire along runway centerline and airborne equipment that detected the strength and direction of this field and computed displacement and heading. Results of these tests indicate that estimates of aircraft displacement from centerline produced by the magnetic leader cable system using either of the two algorithms appear to be adequate for use by an automatic control system during rollout, turnoff, and taxi. Estimates of heading, however, are not sufficiently accurate for use, probably because of distortion of the magnetic field by the metal aircraft

    International audienceMeteor wind data at Grahamstown (33.3° S, 26.5° E) have been used to study the short-term (planetary scale) variations of the diurnal and semidiurnal tidal amplitudes at ~ 90 km altitude. Wavelet multi-resolution and spectral techniques reveal that planetary periodicities of ~ 10 and ~ 16 days dominate the wave spectrum in the ~ 2?20-day period range. The quasi-16-day oscillation is thought to be related to similar oscillations in the lower atmosphere. Also, there seems to be a link between the winter/equinox 16-day oscillation in the mean flow and that in the semidiurnal tidal amplitudes. It is thought that this is probably due to either the coupling between the normal mode-mean flow interactions and the gravity wave-tidal interactions, or to direct nonlinear interactions between planetary waves and the tide. On the other hand, a comparison of the mean flow and the diurnal tide does not show evidence of correlation. Possible reasons for this disparity are discussed briefly
