    Methodology for informed design of sustainable tourism accommodation in Chile’s 9th Region the Gateway to Patagonia

    AbstractLying between Chile's agricultural Central Valley and the wilds of Patagonia, the micro region of Araucanía Andina, is seeing a rise in both national and international tourism. With its snow-capped volcanoes, national parks, native forests and indigenous Mapuche culture, the region offers a wide range of activities to the Special Interest Tourist. The development of winter sports facilities and the growth in Northern Hemisphere visitors during the austral winter is extending the season, in what was previously predominantly a destination for Chilean summer holidaymakers. The tourism infrastructure must therefore respond to provide comfortable, energy efficient, sustainable accommodation during both the cold wet winters and short hot summers, meeting the expectations of an ever more demanding international market. The government funded research project “Sustainable Construction System and Energy Efficiency for Special Interest Tourist Infrastructure in the Araucanía Andina,” FONDEF Regional D10R1003, aims to provide the knowledge needed by the local tourist industry to achieve this goal. This paper presents the methodology and outcomes of the project, including the study of local vernacular architecture, post occupation evaluation of existing infrastructure, bioclimatic analysis, environmental and technical assessment of insulation and construction materials, digital simulation of proposals and the construction of physical test cells. The resulting proposal is a system of timber-framed walls, insulated with sheep's wool, finished externally with a ventilated façade. It is hoped that this prefabricated system, in conjunction with best practice guidelines for construction and management, should enable a sustainable future for the region's tourism. At the same time, the methodology provides a replicable template that has already been applied in other regions of the country

    Latinx Internship Prepa: An Experiential Career Readiness and Preparation Program for Latinx, First-Generation Undergraduate College Students

    Access to higher education has increased within the last decades, particularly within historically underserved communities, but the challenges of navigating college for first-generation Latino/a/x students still show up in the disproportionate rates of retention, persistence, and graduation for this group (National Center for Education Statistics, 2019). High-impact practices have shown to promote student retention and help close the achievement gap for underrepresented students. More specifically, internships and experiential learning activities play an important role in aiding students\u27 careers, academic major, and self-exploration. For first-generation college students, engaging with higher education institutions through these practices often leads to better academic outcomes and an increase in persistence and retention (Conefrey, 2021). Additionally, professionals of color who work at higher education institutions serve as mentors for students of color and often play a large role in the engagement of this community of students. These faculty and staff of color, when working with students, consider the background and identities as well as their social and cultural capital that this specific student population is bringing with them to a college campus, and in many cases provide more resources and support than what their role entails (Luedke, 2017). During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a virtual internship preparation and readiness program, Latinx Internship Prepa, was created and launched during the Summer 2020 semester and again in the Fall 2020 semester. The Latinx Internship Prepa program was designed to provide already existing campus resources and services, such as the Career Center and Writing Center, in a structured 5-week student program. The program also provided guidance on accessing and scheduling the use of these services for first-generation Latinx students and providing a direct connection with staff members in these offices. Participating students were provided with career development tools (e.g., resume building, cover letter writing, and LinkedIn branding tips) as well as experiential activities (mock-interviews and presentation delivery practice) to assist these students with applying and interviewing for national and competitive internships and other experiences such as fellowships and clinicals. Professionals of color and/or first-generation professionals were invited to participate in this program by delivering career readiness content through presentations and engaging activities, in addition to leading individual and group mock-interviews with students. Feedback was considered from the summer session, in which students requested more peer interaction and practice of presentation skills. As a result, in the fall semester, a group presentation over a professional development topic of their choosing was added as an additional activity. This article focuses on the experiences of Latinx, First-Generation undergraduate college students who participated in a 5-week online synchronous internship preparation and readiness program. A secondary data set was used in which 18 students during the summer 2020 session and an additional 7 students during the fall 2020 session responded to both qualitative and quantitative questions. Analyses of the data yielded themes that can inform students’ academic and professional planning and future programs to continue to incorporate cultural representation and more intentional support

    TRACE ELEMENTS IN SHEEP AND GOATS REPRODUCTION: A REVIEW

    The reproduction of small ruminants like goats and sheep managed under extensive range grazing conditions can be affected by nutrients availability and especially by the mineral content of the forages resources on the rangeland. It has been particularly demonstrated that trace elements can have equally, beneficial or detrimental effects, depending on its balance, on reproductive functions in small ruminants. Trace elements as copper, molybdenum, selenium and zinc play key role on the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids; however, the mode of action by which these elements affect reproduction in sheep and goats are not completely understood, due to the complexity in the mode of action of the metallobiomolecules and the neuro-hormonal relationship. In this way, their absence or presence of these minerals in several organs, fluids, or tissues of the reproductive tract have allowed obtaining information on the metabolism and the role of these elements on reproduction in sheep and goats. On this regard, the objective of this document is to review the relationships and effects of some trace elements, on reproductive events in sheep and goats

    EFFECT OF SEASON ON SERUM COPPER AND ZINC CONCENTRATIONS IN CROSSBRED GOATS HAVING DIFFERENT REPRODUCTIVE STATUS UNDER SEMIARID RANGELAND CONDITIONS IN SOUTHERN MEXICO STATE

    The effect of season (rainy: RS, and dry: DS) and reproductive status on copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in blood serum of crossbred goats (BW= 36.01 ± 1.59 kg) were studied under semiarid rangeland conditions in Southern Mexico State. Blood samples from 80 crossbred goats were taken each season (RS and DS). The goats were clustered into 10 different groups considering their reproductive status. Concentrations of Cu and Zn in serum were assayed using atomic absorption. Data were analyzed using a general linear model procedure for a completely randomized design and differences among means were examined using a Tukey test. Blood serum concentrations of Cu and Zn were affected by reproductive status and season (P<0.001). In relation to the season, Cu and Zn serum levels were lower in RS than DS (P<0.05). Overall, kidded goats had the highest values (P<0.01) for Cu than other animals in both seasons (RS or DS). Anestrous goats had the lowest concentrations (P<0.01) for Zn during RS, while all goats at their second or more kidding, rearing single or twins, showed the highest concentrations of Zn (P<0.001) in this season. Adult goats in Southern Mexico State showed a deficiency of Cu and Zn, especially during RS. As such, mineral supplements should be provided with respect to these elements in feeding systems for goats under semiarid rangeland conditions in order to evaluate their impact on health and reproduction

    Electropolymerization and Morphologic Characterization of α-Tetrathiophene

    In this research, poly(α-tetrathiophene), poly(α-TTP), was potentiostatic and potentiodynamically electrosynthesized on Pt and F-doped SnO2 electrodes. The solvent effect (CH2Cl2 and CH3CN) on the nucleation and growth mechanism, NGM, and morphology of the respective deposit was established by potentiostatic method and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Potentiodynamic electropolymerization at low sweep rates proved to favor the obtention of a polymer with a more uniform morphology and, in addition, its capacitance as capacitor increased and the p-doping/undoping relationship is close to one (reversible doping). On the other hand, when potentiostatic electropolymerization was realized, deconvolution of the obtained j/t transients revealed that under all conditions, the main contribution to electrolysis at high times (greater than 20 s) was instantaneous nucleation with 3D growth. Nevertheless, the contribution of instantaneous nucleation with 2D growth is always more important in the early stages of the process. However, regardless of the conditions employed in the electropolymerization, the use of an oligomer as starting unit, such as α-TTF, affords deposits with more homogeneous morphology than when the respective monomer is used. Therefore, the information gathered in the current work constitutes a significant contribution that validates the proposed model for the electropolymerization mechanism

    AbstractEnergy efficiency optimization ICT (Information and Communication Technology) solutions are currently being developed for energy saving in buildings and, to some ex-tent, also for the manufacturing domain. This paper describes an approach and ICT tool developed for manufacturing process energy efficiency optimization, in particular focused on the heat treatment process of steel casting parts. Traditionally this manufacturing process is designed based on experts experience selecting a predefined temperature-time curve provided customer specifications for the resulting steel parts. However this curve can actually be optimised in terms of energy consumption while keeping required mechanical properties. This improved design is what the tool here described provides, using knowledge based approach for process design and multivariate optimisation and simulation techniques for process optimisation
