    Long-term changes in a benthic assemblage associated with artificial reefs

    The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term development of a hard bottom benthic assemblage over a period of 20 years in an area off the mouth of a large river. The artificial reef of Fregene was selected because benthic assemblage data were available for the period 1981-1992. This artificial reef is located in the mid Tyrrhenian Sea, 5 nautical miles north of the two mouths of the Tevere River (Latium, Italy) and 1.5 nautical miles offshore from Fregene (Rome, Italy). The artificial reef was deployed in March 1981 for fisheries enhancement in 10-14 m of water on a sandy-silty seabed. The Tevere River carries suspended materials and a heavy load of organics since it transports Rome's effluent, resulting in the eutrophic state of area waters. Benthic sampling was conducted in 2001 by SCUBA diving; two standard surfaces of 400 cm 2 were scraped from the vertical walls of the same uppermost block in four different periods. All organisms were identified and counted. The methodology used is the same as that adopted in the previous periods, so that the 2001 data could be compared with past collected data. The benthic assemblage was analysed by cluster analysis using the Bray-Curtis index and clustered using the group average clustering algorithm. The SIMPER procedure was used to identify those taxa that characterize each station group identified by cluster analysis. Changes in benthic assemblages and hydrological trends of the Tevere River were investigated using the cumulative sum series method. The 20-year development of the benthic community, starting from the new substratum, is composed of different phases characterised by different benthic assemblages. In particular five different phases were distinguished: 1. Pioneer species recruitment (May 1981-June 1981); 2. Mytilus galloprovincialis (mussel) dominance (August 1981-November 1983); 3. M. galloprovincialis regression (July 1984-October 1985); 4. M. galloprovincialis absence (91-92); 5. Bryozoans bioconstruction dominance (2001). The dynamic succession of the observed benthic assemblages exhibited a good relation with the Tevere River flow. The Tevere River flow, and the subsequent sedimentation process, seems to have strongly influenced the benthic assemblage succession of the Fregene artificial reef

    Mesoporous silica networks with improved diffusion and interference-rejecting properties for electroanalytical sensing

    Mesoporous silica materials characterized by well-ordered microstructure and size- and shape-controlled pores have attracted much attention in the last years. These systems can be used for the development of functional thin films for advanced applications in catalysis and electrocatalysis, sensors and actuators, separation techniques, micro- and nano-electronic engineering [1-2]. In this work, \u201cinsulating\u201d and mesoporous silica films were prepared by spin coating a home-made silica sol on a cleaned ITO glass support. The mesoporosity was controlled by the use of Polystyrene (PS) latex beads with different dimensions (30-60-100 nm) as template. The number of successive multi-layer depositions was varied (1-2-3-5 layers) and after the template removal, stable, homogeneous and reproducible transparent films were obtained, characterized by an interconnected porous structure. The morphological features and the physicochemical and optical properties of the films and/or sol-precursors were studied by DLS, FE-SEM, AFM, UV-vis transmittance spectroscopy and wettability analyses. Moreover, a deep electrochemical characterization was also performed by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). In particular, the use of two redox mediator probes [(K4Fe(CN)6) and (Ru(NH3)6Cl3)], presenting opposite charge and different diffusional behaviour, allowed the comprehension of the mass transport and charge transfer phenomena, evidencing the effects of spatial confinement and charge selection. In the case of \u201cinsulating\u201d films prepared without the use of PS latexes, we proved an experimental evidence for theoretical models [3] concerning electroinactive layer-modified electrodes, with a scan-rate-dependent variation of the CV shape due to a progressive increase in the diffusion coefficient inside the insulating layer. A complex balance between diverging effects (higher hydrophilicity and insulating behavior effects of silica) when increasing the numbers of layers was also observed [4]. In the case of mesoporous layers, a better electrochemical response of smaller pores and of thicker layers was found, due to two main cooperative phenomena: i) a diffusion modification from fully planar to radial-convergent at the pore-silica interface due to surface porosity; ii) the presence of pores in a hydrophilic matrix which leads to a capillary pull effects, stronger in the case of smaller hydrophilic pores. The easiness of preparation and the interesting properties of these devices pave the way towards their use in many fields, particularly trace electroanalysis in real matrices. In fact, for example, the porous and properly charged network is able to exclude interfering macromolecules (mucin in our case), preventing electrode biofouling and enhancing the performances of the sensor towards dopamine detection.     Hydrodynamical Models of Superfluid Turbulence

    This review paper puts together some of our results concerning the application of non equilibrium Thermodynamics to superfluid liquid helium. Two of the most important situations of this quantum fluid are rotating superfluid and superfluid turbulence, both characterized by the presence of quantized vortices (vortex lines whose core is about 1 Angstrom and the quantum of circulation is h/mh/m, hh being the Plank's constant and mm the mass of helium atom). In the first part of the work a non-standard model of superfluid helium, which considers heat flux as independent variable, is briefly recalled, and compared with the well known two-fluid model, in absence of vortices, proposed by Tisza and Landau more than half a century ago. The model is generalized taking into account the presence of vortices in different cases of physical interest: rotating superfluids, counterflow superfluid turbulence (a particular situation in which no mass flux but only heat flux is present) and combined situations of counterflow and rotation. Since vortices are not fixed when all the hydrodynamical fields change, an additional scalar quantity, the averaged vortex line density per unit volume LL, {\it line density} for short, is introduced in the model as a new field variable and an evolution equation is written for it, both in linear and in nonlinear regimes, via Extended Thermodynamics. Finally, to encompass more general situations, the model is further extended considering the flux of vortex line density as an independent new variable. In all these models the propagation of harmonic waves is studied, motivated by the fact that vortex lines density is experimentally detected via the attenuation of second sound.     A dataset of annotated omnidirectional videos for distancing applications

    Omnidirectional (or 360â—¦ ) cameras are acquisition devices that, in the next few years, could have a big impact on video surveillance applications, research, and industry, as they can record a spherical view of a whole environment from every perspective. This paper presents two new contributions to the research community: the CVIP360 dataset, an annotated dataset of 360â—¦ videos for distancing applications, and a new method to estimate the distances of objects in a scene from a single 360â—¦ image. The CVIP360 dataset includes 16 videos acquired outdoors and indoors, annotated by adding information about the pedestrians in the scene (bounding boxes) and the distances to the camera of some points in the 3D world by using markers at fixed and known intervals. The proposed distance estimation algorithm is based on geometry facts regarding the acquisition process of the omnidirectional device, and is uncalibrated in practice: the only required parameter is the camera height. The proposed algorithm was tested on the CVIP360 dataset, and empirical results demonstrate that the estimation error is negligible for distancing applications

    Enhanced P2P Services Providing Multimedia Content

    The retrieval facilities of most Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems are limited to queries based on unique identifiers or small sets of keywords. Unfortunately, this approach is very inadequate and inefficient when a huge amount of multimedia resources is shared. To address this major limitation, we propose an original image and video sharing system, in which a user is able to interactively search interesting resources by means of content-based image and video retrieval techniques. In order to limit the network traffic load, maximizing the usefulness of each peer contacted in the query process, we also propose the adoption of an adaptive overlay routing algorithm, exploiting compact representations of the multimedia resources shared by each peer. Experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed approach, that is capable of dynamically adapting the network topology to peer interests, on the basis of query interactions among users

    Application of biotic and taxonomic distinctness indices in assessing the Ecological Quality Status of two coastal lakes: Caprolace and Fogliano lakes (Central Italy)

    Marine biotic indices (AMBI, BENTIX) and the statistical tool M-AMBI (Multivariate AMBI) were applied as a comparative approach in assessing the Ecological Quality Status (EcoQS) of two Mediterranean coastal lakes (Caprolace and Fogliano lakes) situated in the Circeo National Park (Central Italy). The macrobenthic community was analysed using univariate indices (community structure), correspondence analysis (CA) and taxonomic distinctness indices (Delta(+) and Lambda(+)). The community composition showed a dominance of lagoonal species in both coastal lakes, while in Caprolace lake marine taxa were also found. Diversity index (H') complies to ranges found in Mediterranean lagoons and taxonomic distinctness indices demonstrated that taxonomy structure is in accordance with natural variability ranges. Principal component analysis (PCA) on chemical parameters of water and sediment showed that both coastal lakes differ mainly in their organic matter composition. In fact, the protein fraction of bio-polymeric carbon prevails in Fogliano lake, while the 'refractory' component represented by carbohydrate fraction is predominant in Caprolace lake. The difference between the two coastal lakes was also demonstrated by co-inertia analysis (COIA) performed using abundance of species and concentrations of chemical parameters. The results from the application of the three biotic indices do not highlight a clear distinction between the two lagoons. However, the AMBI index provided a more suitable evaluation of EcoQS corresponding to 'slightly polluted' lagoons while M-AMBI and moreover BENTIX indices indicated a worsening situation. The biotic indices are widely used in assessing the EcoQS in marine environments, but their proper application in transitional waters would depend on a resettlement; thresholds established in the biotic index scale values need to be modified according to natural variability of transitional waters referring to abiotic conditions and abundance of tolerant species.     The SMAP Level 4 Carbon PRODUCT for Monitoring Terrestrial Ecosystem-Atmosphere CO2 Exchange

    The NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission Level 4 Carbon (L4_C) product provides model estimates of Net Ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) incorporating SMAP soil moisture information as a primary driver. The L4_C product provides NEE, computed as total respiration less gross photosynthesis, at a daily time step and approximate 14-day latency posted to a 9-km global grid summarized by plant functional type. The L4_C product includes component carbon fluxes, surface soil organic carbon stocks, underlying environmental constraints, and detailed uncertainty metrics. The L4_C model is driven by the SMAP Level 4 Soil Moisture (L4_SM) data assimilation product, with additional inputs from the Goddard Earth Observing System, Version 5 (GEOS-5) weather analysis and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite data. The L4_C data record extends from March 2015 to present with ongoing production. Initial comparisons against global CO2 eddy flux tower measurements, satellite Solar Induced Canopy Florescence (SIF) and other independent observation benchmarks show favorable L4_C performance and accuracy, capturing the dynamic biosphere response to recent weather anomalies and demonstrating the value of SMAP observations for monitoring of global terrestrial water and carbon cycle linkages

    Green and low cost tetracycline degradation processes by nanometric and immobilized TiO2 systems

    Tetracycline accumulation in surface waters, due to its extensive use and ineffective removal by traditional remediation treatments, represents a major environmental problem, leading e.g. to increasedantibiotic resistance. Here, photocatalysis by TiO2, both as nanostructured powders and macroscopic immobilized systems, is proposed as an efficient procedure to totally degrade tetracycline to harmless compounds. Home-made TiO2 powders were studied to clarify the role of synthetic and process parameters (light pre-treatment, calcination temperature) and to shed light on the role of radical species in promoting the reaction (tests with radical scavengers). The control of phase composition and wetting features appears to be essential in producing photocatalysts able to completely mineralize tetracycline in a short time scale (6 h). The knowledge acquired on the powder system was preparatory to the development of low cost, mechanically robust and highly active TiO2 immobilized systems. Two different substrate geometries (laminas and pellets) were investigated to ease the photocatalyst removal from the treated effluent. Both immobilized systems proved efficient: in particular, the TiO2-coated pellets promoted tetracycline degradation and mineralization on a time scale that is very competitive when compared to similar literature immobilized systems
