    Use of ERTS data for a multidisciplinary analysis of Michigan resources

    The author has identified the following significant results. The results of this investigation of ratioing simulated ERTS spectral bands and several non-ERTS bands (all collected by an airborne multispectral scanner) indicate that significant terrain information is available from band-ratio images. Ratio images, which are based on the relative spectral changes which occur from one band to another, are useful for enhancing differences and aiding the image interpreter in identifying and mapping the distribution of such terrain elements as seedling crops, all bare soil, organic soil, mineral soil, forest and woodlots, and marsh areas. In addition, the ratio technique may be useful for computer processing to obtain recognition images of large areas at lower costs than with statistical decision rules. The results of this study of ratio processing of aircraft MSS data will be useful for future processing and evaluation of ERTS-1 data for soil and landform studies. Additionally, the results of ratioing spectral bands other than those currently collected by ERTS-1 suggests that some other bands (particularly a thermal band) would be useful in future satellites

    Aharanov-Bohm excitons at elevated temperatures in type-II ZnTe/ZnSe quantum dots

    Optical emission from type-II ZnTe/ZnSe quantum dots demonstrates large and persistent oscillations in both the peak energy and intensity indicating the formation of coherently rotating states. Furthermore, the Aharanov-Bohm (AB) effect is shown to be remarkably robust and persists until 180K. This is at least one order of magnitude greater than the typical temperatures in lithographically defined rings. To our knowledge this is the highest temperature at which the AB effect has been observed in semiconductor structures

    Sex-specific fundamental and formant frequency patterns in a cross-sectional study

    An extensive developmental acoustic study of the speech patterns of children and adults was reported by Lee and colleagues [Lee et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 105, 1455-1468 (1999)]. This paper presents a reexamination of selected fundamental frequency and formant frequency data presented in their report for 10 monophthongs by investigating sex-specific and developmental patterns using two different approaches. The first of these includes the investigation of age- and sex-specific formant frequency patterns in the monophthongs. The second, the investigation of fundamental frequency and formant frequency data using the critical band rate (bark) scale and a number of acoustic-phonetic dimensions of the monophthongs from an age- and sex-specific perspective. These acoustic-phonetic dimensions include: vowel spaces and distances from speaker centroids; frequency differences between the formant frequencies of males and females; vowel openness/closeness and frontness/backness; the degree of vocal effort; and formant frequency ranges. Both approaches reveal both age- and sex-specific development patterns which also appear to be dependent on whether vowels are peripheral or non-peripheral. The developmental emergence of these sex-specific differences are discussed with reference to anatomical, physiological, sociophonetic and culturally determined factors. Some directions for further investigation into the age-linked sex differences in speech across the lifespan are also proposed

    Changes of liver-resident NK cells during liver regeneration in rats

    To determine the role of NK cells in regulation of tissue growth, the phenotype and function of liver-resident NK cells were studied after 70% partial hepatectomy in rats. The process of liver regeneration was generally completed by clay 14. In contrast, the number of liver resident NK cells (NKR-P1(bright)) was restored as early as day 3 after partial hepatectomy. However, spontaneous functions of liver resident NK cells, including killing of YAC-1 and P815 targets, Ab-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, and redirected killing via NKR-P1, were continuously suppressed throughout the entire period of liver regeneration (from 3 h to 14 days). Augmentation of NK cytotoxicity against P815 targets and induction of NK cell adherence to plastic following 24 h of IL-2 stimulation showed a similar pattern of suppression. However, IL-2-induced augmentation of YAC-1 killing, proliferation and generation of adherent NK cells, and LAK activity in 5- to 7-day cultures were found to be suppressed only during the first 24 h and increased between days 2 and 7 after hepatectomy. Sorted NK cells (≥95% NKR-P1(bright)) from liver-resident mononuclear leukocytes 24 h after partial hepatectomy showed the same pattern of suppression as unsorted mononuclear leukocytes. In contrast to liver- resident NK cells, no significant changes were detected in peripheral blood or spleen NK cells of rats following partial hepatectomy. Of particular interest, in normal liver, hepatocytes were resistant to NK lysis, while resident NK cells were cytotoxic for various NK-sensitive targets. In contrast, during the early period of liver regeneration, when hepatocytes were sensitive to lysis by liver resident NK cells of normal rats, NK cells obtained from regenerating liver tissues were unable to mediate cytotoxicity. At the final phase of liver regeneration (days 7-14 after hepatectomy), both resistance of hepatocytes to killing by NK cells and cytotoxicity of liver- resident lymphocytes against hepatocytes from regenerating liver were simultaneously restored. In vivo depletion of NK cells by injection of rats with anti-NKR-P1 mAb resulted in a significant augmentation of liver regeneration subsequent to partial hepatectomy. Our data suggest that liver- resident NK cells may he involved in regulation of the extent of liver regeneration
