Antenna pointing compensation based on precision optical measurement techniques
The pointing control loops of the Deep Space Network 70 meter antennas extend only to the Intermediate Reference Structure (IRS). Thus, distortion of the structure forward of the IRS due to unpredictable environmental loads can result in uncompensated boresight shifts which degrade blind pointing accuracy. A system is described which can provide real time bias commands to the pointing control system to compensate for environmental effects on blind pointing performance. The bias commands are computed in real time based on optical ranging measurements of the structure from the IRS to a number of selected points on the primary and secondary reflectors
Religion and Intimate Partner Violence in Chile: Macro- and Micro-Level Influences
The Catholic Church has had a strong influence on the Chilean legal and social landscape in ways that have adversely affected victims of intimate partner violence; e.g., it succeeded until just five years ago in blocking efforts to legalize divorce. At the same time, quantitative studies based on survey data from the United States and other countries show a generally favorable influence of religion on health and many other domains of life, including intimate partner violence. The present study explores the puzzle posed by these seemingly opposing macro- and micro- level forces. Results based on data from the 2005 Survey of Student Well-Being, a questionnaire on gender based violence administered to students at a large public university in Chile, show that moderate or low levels of religiosity are associated with reduced vulnerability to violence, but high levels are not. This non-linearity sheds light on the puzzle, because at the macro level the religious views shaping Chile's legal and social environment have been extreme.intimate partner violence, religion
Early Dark Energy Can Resolve The Hubble Tension
Early dark energy (EDE) that behaves like a cosmological constant at early
times (redshifts ) and then dilutes away like radiation or faster
at later times can solve the Hubble tension. In these models, the sound horizon
at decoupling is reduced resulting in a larger value of the Hubble parameter
inferred from the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We consider two
physical models for this EDE, one involving an oscillating scalar field and
another a slowly-rolling field. We perform a detailed calculation of the
evolution of perturbations in these models. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo search
of the parameter space for the EDE parameters, in conjunction with the standard
cosmological parameters, identifies regions in which inferred from {\it
Planck} CMB data agrees with the SH0ES local measurement. In these cosmologies,
current baryon acoustic oscillation and supernova data are described as
successfully as in \LCDM, while the fit to {\it Planck} data is slightly
improved. Future CMB and large-scale-structure surveys will further probe this
scenario.Comment: v1: 4p+appendix, 3 figures. v2: small changes, notably estimates of

Is Corporate America Walking the Talk of Diversity Programs? The Impact of Diversity Initiatives on Institutional and Cultural Discrimination
This case study will review and evaluate recent management research on the effects of race and gender in groups at the executive, director, management and work group levels of organizations. It will also examine research and examples of diversity initiatives in organizations and the impact of external influences such as social conditioning, informal networks and groups. The analysis examines the challenges that managers from minority groups face, specifically black managers, in white dominated organizations and the unique skills they are developing to assist them in being effective. The study includes recommendations for additional areas of research along with a proposal for a diversity initiative plan
