Study of cavernous underground conduits in Nam La (Northwest Vietnam) by an integrative approach
This paper presents the result of an investigation of underground conduits, which connect the swallow holes and the resurgence of a blind river in the tropical, highly karstified limestone Nam La catchment in the NW of Vietnam. The Nam La River disappears underground in several swallow holes near the outlet of the catchment. In the rainy season this results in flooding upstream of the sinkholes. A hypothesis is that the Nam La River resurges at a large cavern spring 4.5 km east of the catchment outlet. A multi-thematic study of the possible connections between the swallow holes and the resurgence was carried out to investigate the geological structure, tectonics, cave structure analysis and discharge time series. The existence of the underground conduits was also tested and proven by tracer experiments. On the basis of a lineament analysis the location of the underground conduits were predicted. A remote sensing derived lineament-length density map was used to track routes from the swallow holes to the resurgence, having the shortest length but highest lineament density. This resulted in a plan-view prediction of underground conduits that matches with the cave and fault development. The functioning of the conduits was further explained by analysing flooding records of a nearby doline, which turns out to act as a temporary storage reservoir mitigating flooding of the catchment outlet area
Single-Atom Resolved Fluorescence Imaging of an Atomic Mott Insulator
The reliable detection of single quantum particles has revolutionized the
field of quantum optics and quantum information processing. For several years,
researchers have aspired to extend such detection possibilities to larger scale
strongly correlated quantum systems, in order to record in-situ images of a
quantum fluid in which each underlying quantum particle is detected. Here we
report on fluorescence imaging of strongly interacting bosonic Mott insulators
in an optical lattice with single-atom and single-site resolution. From our
images, we fully reconstruct the atom distribution on the lattice and identify
individual excitations with high fidelity. A comparison of the radial density
and variance distributions with theory provides a precise in-situ temperature
and entropy measurement from single images. We observe Mott-insulating plateaus
with near zero entropy and clearly resolve the high entropy rings separating
them although their width is of the order of only a single lattice site.
Furthermore, we show how a Mott insulator melts for increasing temperatures due
to a proliferation of local defects. Our experiments open a new avenue for the
manipulation and analysis of strongly interacting quantum gases on a lattice,
as well as for quantum information processing with ultracold atoms. Using the
high spatial resolution, it is now possible to directly address individual
lattice sites. One could, e.g., introduce local perturbations or access regions
of high entropy, a crucial requirement for the implementation of novel cooling
schemes for atoms on a lattice
Evidence of early multi-strange hadron freeze-out in high energy nuclear collisions
Recently reported transverse momentum distributions of strange hadrons
produced in Pb(158AGeV) on Pb collisions and corresponding results from the
relativistic quantum molecular dynamics (RQMD) approach are examined. We argue
that the experimental observations favor a scenario in which multi-strange
hadrons are formed and decouple from the system rather early at large energy
densities (around 1 GeV/fm). The systematics of the strange and non-strange
particle spectra indicate that the observed transverse flow develops mainly in
the late hadronic stages of these reactions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Resistivity due to a Domain Wall in Ferromagnetic Metal
The resistivity due to a domain wall in ferromagnetic metallic wire is
calculated based on the linear response theory. The interaction between
conduction electrons and the wall is expressed in terms of a classical gauge
field which is introduced by the local gauge transformation in the electron
spin space. It is shown that the wall contributes to the decoherence of
electrons and that this quantum correction can dominate over the Boltzmann
resisitivity, leading to a decrease of resisitivity by nucleation of a wall.
The conductance fluctuation due to the motion of the wall is also investigated.

Hdac6 regulates Tip60-p400 function in stem cells
In embryonic stem cells (ESCs), the Tip60 histone acetyltransferase activates genes required for proliferation and silences genes that promote differentiation. Here we show that the class II histone deacetylase Hdac6 co-purifies with Tip60-p400 complex from ESCs. Hdac6 is necessary for regulation of most Tip60-p400 target genes, particularly those repressed by the complex. Unlike differentiated cells, where Hdac6 is mainly cytoplasmic, Hdac6 is largely nuclear in ESCs, neural stem cells (NSCs), and some cancer cell lines, and interacts with Tip60-p400 in each. Hdac6 localizes to promoters bound by Tip60-p400 in ESCs, binding downstream of transcription start sites. Surprisingly, Hdac6 does not appear to deacetylate histones, but rather is required for Tip60-p400 binding to many of its target genes. Finally, we find that, like canonical subunits of Tip60-p400, Hdac6 is necessary for robust ESC differentiation. These data suggest that Hdac6 plays a major role in the modulation of Tip60-p400 function in stem cells. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.01557.001
Pair production of neutralinos and charginos at the LHC: the role of Higgs bosons exchange
We analyze the effects of the s-channel Higgs bosons exchange on the
charginos and neutralinos-pair production in proton-proton collision at the
CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the following channels: pp \to
\Cha^+\Cha^-/\Neu^0\Neu^0 + X, within the minimal supersymmetric standard
model (MSSM). Assuming the usual GUT relation between and at the
weak scale, we found that substantial enhancement can be obtained through
s-channel Higgs bosons exchange in the mixed regime where with
moderate to large at the resonance of the heavy Higgs bosons. By
Combining the phenomenological constraints on neutralinos and charginos, we may
still find regions of parameter space where charginos and neutralinos-pair
production at the LHC from initial state can be large and observable
at LHC. We also compute the full complete set of electroweak (EW) contributions
to pp\to gg\to \Cha^+\Cha^-/\Neu^0\Neu^0 + X at one loop level in the general
MSSM. The analytical computation of the complete tree level amplitude for
b\bar{b} \to \Cha^+\Cha^-/\Neu^0\Neu^0 + X, including s-channel Higgs

The Correlation between Rates of Cancer and Autism: An Exploratory Ecological Investigation
Autism is associated with high rates of genomic aberrations, including chromosomal rearrangements and de novo copy-number variations. These observations are reminiscent of cancer, a disease where genomic rearrangements also play a role. We undertook a correlative epidemiological study to explore the possibility that shared risk factors might exist for autism and specific types of cancer.To determine if significant correlations exist between the prevalence of autism and the incidence of cancer, we obtained and analyzed state-wide data reported by age and gender throughout the United States. Autism data were obtained from the U.S. Department of Education via the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (2000-2007, reported annually by age group) and cancer incidence data were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (1999-2005). IDEA data were further subdivided depending on the method used to diagnose autism (DSM IV or the Code of Federal Regulations, using strict or expanded criteria). Spearman rank correlations were calculated for all possible pairwise combinations of annual autism rates and the incidence of specific cancers. Following this, Bonferroni's correction was applied to significance values. Two independent methods for determining an overall combined p-value based on dependent correlations were obtained for each set of calculations. High correlations were found between autism rates and the incidence of in situ breast cancer (p < or = 10(-10), modified inverse chi square, n = 16) using data from states that adhere strictly to the Code of Federal Regulations for diagnosing autism. By contrast, few significant correlations were observed between autism prevalence and the incidence of 23 other female and 22 male cancers.These findings suggest that there may be an association between autism and specific forms of cancer
