Double Consciousness in Today’s Black America
In The Souls of Black Folk, W.E.B. Du Bois introduces double consciousness as
a result of racial prejudice and oppression. Explained as a state of confliction
felt by black Americans, Du Bois presents double consciousness as integral
to understanding the black experience. Later philosophers question the
importance of double consciousness to current race discussions, but this paper
contends that double consciousness provides valuable insights into black and
white relations. To do this, I will utilize the modern slang term, “Oreo,” to
highlight how a perceived incompatibility between blacks and whites could
prevent America from achieving a greater unit
Affine Hecke algebras and generalisations of quiver Hecke algebras for type B
We define and study cyclotomic quotients of affine Hecke algebras of type B.
We establish an isomorphism between direct sums of blocks of these algebras and
a generalisation, for type B, of cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras which are a
family of graded algebras closely related to algebras introduced by Varagnolo
and Vasserot. Inspired by the work of Brundan and Kleshchev we first give a
family of isomorphisms for the corresponding result in type A which includes
their original isomorphism. We then select a particular isomorphism from this
family and use it to prove our result.Comment: 37 page
Affine Hecke algebras of type D and generalisations of quiver Hecke algebras
We define and study cyclotomic quotients of affine Hecke algebras of type D.
We establish an isomorphism between (direct sums of blocks of) these cyclotomic
quotients and a generalisation of cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras which are a
family of Z-graded algebras closely related to algebras introduced by Shan,
Varagnolo and Vasserot. To achieve this, we first complete the study of
cyclotomic quotients of affine Hecke algebras of type B by considering the
situation when a deformation parameter p squares to 1. We then relate the two
generalisations of quiver Hecke algebras showing that the one for type D can be
seen as fixed point subalgebras of their analogues for type B, and we carefully
study how far this relation remains valid for cyclotomic quotients. This allows
us to obtain the desired isomorphism. This isomorphism completes the family of
isomorphisms relating affine Hecke algebras of classical types to
(generalisations of) quiver Hecke algebras, originating in the famous result of
Brundan and Kleshchev for the type A.Comment: 26 page
Choosing friends carefully: allies for critical computing
In this paper, we argue firstly that researchers in critical
computing should address the specific information and communication technology (ICT) needs and activities of those agencies concerned with emancipatory issues. Secondly, we argue that a critical perspective, explicitly foregrounding empowerment and emancipatory concerns,
forms a basis for emphasising the practice of individuals,
groups and organsations , rather than purely focusing on
organisational form in social action. We discuss this context of social action, identifying some relevant ICT-related challenges. We identify three themes that highlight factors that differentiate ICT support for social action groups from the setting of conventional
business and service organisations: Free / Libre Open-
Source Software, techniques and technologies for engagement through storytelling, and learning and evaluation in social action.</p

Higgs-free confinement hierarchy in five colour QCD
I consider the monopole condensate of five color QCD. The naive lowest energy
state is unobtainable at one-loop for five or more colors due to simple
geometric considerations. The consequent adjustment of the vacuum condensate
generates a hierarchy of confinement scales in a natural Higgs-free manner. The
accompanying symmetry hierarchy contains hints of standard model phenomenology.Comment: 9 pages, PTP class file, discussion at bottom of page 5 correcte
Flat conductor cable survey
Design handbook contains data and illustrations concerned with commercial and Government flat-conductor-cable connecting and terminating hardware. Material was obtained from a NASA-sponsored industry-wide survey of approximately 150 companies and Government agencies
Protective telescoping shield for solar concentrator
An apparatus is described for use with a solar concentrator such as a parabolic dish which concentrates sunlight onto a small opening of a solar receiver, for protecting the receiver in the event of a system failure that could cause concentrated sunlight to damage the receiver. The protective apparatus includes a structure which can be moved to a stowed position where it does not block sunlight, to a deployed position. In this position, the structure forms a tube which substantially completely surrounds an axis connecting the receiver opening to the center of the concentrator at locations between the receiver and the concentrator
