    Effects of environmental changes on marsh vegetation with special reference to salinity

    A literature survey primarily concerned with brackish and salt marshes located along the eastern coast of North America and the Gulf Coast was presented. The review concentrated upon the vegetation of the marshes, particularly in regard to distribution, composition, succession, and productivity. Special efforts were made to include major works concerned with the Louisiana and Mississipi coastal marshes. It appears that spring to early summer (weeks 18-34 of the year; April - mid-July) is the best period of time to categorize the communities. It is during this time of the year that the communities appear most stable in regard to species composition. This allows a strong correlation to be drawn between the salinity of the region and the dominant species of the community. As such, this would seem to be best period in which to sample the marsh via air or land for differences in vegetation and salinity

    A Solution for a Fundamental Problem of 3D Inference based on 2D Representations

    3D inference from monocular vision using neural networks is an important research area of computer vision. Applications of the research area are various with many proposed solutions and have shown remarkable performance. Although many efforts have been invested, there are still unanswered questions, some of which are fundamental. In this paper, I discuss a problem that I hope will come to be known as a generalization of the Blind Perspective-n-Point (Blind PnP) problem for object-driven 3D inference based on 2D representations. The vital difference between the fundamental problem and the Blind PnP problem is that 3D inference parameters in the fundamental problem are attached directly to 3D points and the camera concept will be represented through the sharing of the parameters of these points. By providing an explainable and robust gradient-decent solution based on 2D representations for an important special case of the problem, the paper opens up a new approach for using available information-based learning methods to solve problems related to 3D object pose estimation from 2D images

    Faxen relations in solids - a generalized approach to particle motion in elasticity and viscoelasticity

    A movable inclusion in an elastic material oscillates as a rigid body with six degrees of freedom. Displacement/rotation and force/moment tensors which express the motion of the inclusion in terms of the displacement and force at arbitrary exterior points are introduced. Using reciprocity arguments two general identities are derived relating these tensors. Applications of the identities to spherical particles provide several new results, including simple expressions for the force and moment on the particle due to plane wave excitation.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Investigating the Impact of the Deeper Learning Curriculum on High School Students\u27 Understanding of Drug Discovery

    In the summer of 2014, 23 local high school students participated in a pipeline program on the campus of Cleveland State University. The program, entitled “Careers in Health and Medical Professions” (CHAMPS), serves to prepare college-bound students for careers in the medical field. CHAMPS utilizes a simulated drug discovery curriculum based on “Deeper Learning” (Jensen & Nicholsen, 2008) to provide the high school students with authentic hands-on research experience. There are four main goals in this program: increase awareness of medical careers, introduce knowledge related to drug discovery, build on students’ academic skills, and familiarize the students with 21st century skills. Three undergraduate student researchers were assigned to investigate these goals using a variety of methods, including surveys, individual and group interviews, and laboratory observations. General findings include participants were surprised at the source of drugs; their awareness of health and medical careers increased but their specific career did not change; and nearly all of the students possessed a proficient level of inter-personal skills, communication, and technology prowess.https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/u_poster_2014/1009/thumbnail.jp
