Vacuum Decay in CFT and the Riemann-Hilbert problem

    Get PDF
We study vacuum stability in 1+1 dimensional Conformal Field Theories with external background fields. We show that the vacuum decay rate is given by a non-local two-form. This two-form is a boundary term that must be added to the effective in/out Lagrangian. The two-form is expressed in terms of a Riemann-Hilbert decomposition for background gauge fields, and its novel "functional" version in the gravitational case.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

Substrate utilization during exercise performed with and without glucose ingestion in female and male endurance trained athletes

Compared to males, females oxidize proportionately more fat and less carbohydrate during endurance exercise performed in the fasted state. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that there may also be gender differences in exogenous carbohydrate (CHOexo) oxidation during exercise. Healthy, young males (n = 7) and females (n = 7) each completed 2 exercise trials (90 min cycle ergometry at 60% VO[sub2peak]), 1 week apart. Females were eumenorrheic and were tested in the midfollicular phase of their menstrual cycle. Subjects drank intermittently either 8% CHOexo (1 g glucose &sdot; kg &sdot; h[sup-1]) enriched with U-13C glucose or an artificially sweetened placebo during the trial. Whole-body substrate oxidation was determined from PER, urinary urea excretion, and the ratio of 13C:12C in expired gas during the final 60 min of exercise. During the placebo trial, fat oxidation was higher in females than in males (0.42 &plusmn; 0.07 vs. 0.32 &plusmn; 0.09 g &sdot; min[sup-1] . kg LBM[sup-1] x 10[sup-2]) at 30 min of exercise (p &lt; .05). When averaged over the final 60 min of exercise, the relative proportions of fat, total carbohydrate, and protein were similar between groups. During CHOexo ingestion, both the ratio of 13C: 12C in expired gas (p &lt; .05) and the proportion of energy derived from CHOexo relative to LBM (p &lt; .05) were higher in females compared to males at 75- and 90-min exercise. When averaged over the final 60 min of exercise, the percentage of CHOexo to the total energy contribution tended to be higher in females (14.3 + 1.2%) than in males (11.2 &plusmn; 1.2%; p = .09). The reduction in endogenous CHO oxidation with CHOexo intake was also greater in females (12.9 &plusmn; 3.1%) than in males (5.1 &plusmn; 2.0%; p = .05). Compared to males, females may oxidize a greater relative proportion of CHOexo during endurance exercise which, in turn, may spare more endogenous fuel. Based on these observations, ingested carbohydrate may be a particularly beneficial source of fuel during endurance exercise for females.<br /

Gender Differences in Carbohydrate Metabolism and Carbohydrate Loading

    Get PDF
Prior to endurance competition, many endurance athletes participate in a carbohydrate loading regimen in order to help delay the onset of fatigue. The "classic" regimen generally includes an intense glycogen depleting training period of approximately two days followed by a glycogen loading period for 3–4 days, ingesting approximately 60–70% of total energy intake as carbohydrates, while the newer method does not consist of an intense glycogen depletion protocol. However, recent evidence has indicated that glycogen loading does not occur in the same manner for males and females, thus affecting performance. The scope of this literature review will include a brief description of the role of estradiol in relation to metabolism and gender differences seen in carbohydrate metabolism and loading

Parafermionic Liouville field theory and instantons on ALE spaces

In this paper we study the correspondence between the su^(n)ksu^(n)p/su^(n)k+p\hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{k}\oplus \hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{p}/\hat{\textrm{su}}(n)_{k+p} coset conformal field theories and N=2\mathcal{N}=2 SU(n) gauge theories on R4/Zp\mathbb{R}^{4}/\mathbb{Z}_{p}. Namely we check the correspondence between the SU(2) Nekrasov partition function on R4/Z4\mathbb{R}^{4}/\mathbb{Z}_{4} and the conformal blocks of the S3S_{3} parafermion algebra (in SS and DD modules). We find that they are equal up to the U(1)-factor as it was in all cases of AGT-like relations. Studying the structure of the instanton partition function on R4/Zp\mathbb{R}^4/\mathbb{Z}_p we also find some evidence that this correspondence with arbitrary pp takes place up to the U(1)-factor.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, misprints corrected, references added, version to appear in JHE

Performance of ab initio and density functional methods for conformational equilibria of CnH2n+2 alkane isomers (n=2-8)

Conformational energies of n-butane, n-pentane, and n-hexane have been calculated at the CCSD(T) level and at or near the basis set limit. Post-CCSD(T) contribution were considered and found to be unimportant. The data thus obtained were used to assess the performance of a variety of density functional methods. Double-hybrid functionals like B2GP-PLYP and B2K-PLYP, especially with a small Grimme-type empirical dispersion correction, are capable of rendering conformational energies of CCSD(T) quality. These were then used as a `secondary standard' for a larger sample of alkanes, including isopentane and the branched hexanes as well as key isomers of heptane and octane. Popular DFT functionals like B3LYP, B3PW91, BLYP, PBE, and PBE0 tend to overestimate conformer energies without dispersion correction, while the M06 family severely underestimates GG interaction energies. Grimme-type dispersion corrections for these overcorrect and lead to qualitatively wrong conformer orderings. All of these functionals also exhibit deficiencies in the conformer geometries, particularly the backbone torsion angles. The PW6B95 and, to a lesser extent, BMK functionals are relatively free of these deficiencies. Performance of these methods is further investigated to derive conformer ensemble corrections to the enthalpy function, H298H0H_{298}-H_0, and the Gibbs energy function, gef(T)[G(T)H0]/T{\rm gef}(T)\equiv - [G(T)-H_0]/T, of these alkanes. While H298H0H_{298}-H_0 is only moderately sensitive to the level of theory, gef(T){\rm gef}(T) exhibits more pronounced sensitivity. Once again, double hybrids acquit themselves very well.Comment: J. Phys. Chem. A, revised [Walter Thiel festschrift

Exome Sequencing as a Diagnostic Tool for Pediatric-Onset Ataxia

Ataxia demonstrates substantial phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity. We set out to determine the diagnostic yield of exome sequencing in pediatric patients with ataxia without a molecular diagnosis after standard-of-care assessment in Canada. FORGE (Finding Of Rare disease GEnes) Canada is a nation-wide project focused on identifying novel disease genes for rare pediatric diseases using whole-exome sequencing. We retrospectively selected all FORGE Canada projects that included cerebellar ataxia as a feature. We identified 28 such families and a molecular diagnosis was made in 13; a success rate of 46%. In 11 families, we identified mutations in genes associated with known neurological syndromes and in two we identified novel disease genes. Exome analysis of sib pairs and/or patients born to consanguineous parents was more likely to be successful (9/13) than simplex cases (4/15). Our data suggest that exome sequencing is an effective first line test for pediatric patients with ataxia where a specific single gene is not immediately suspected to be causative. © 2013 The Authors. *Human Mutation published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc

Mitochondrial myopathy presenting as fibromyalgia: a case report

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>To the best of our knowledge, we describe for the first time the case of a woman who met the diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia, did not respond to therapy for that disorder, and was subsequently diagnosed by biochemical and genetic studies with a mitochondrial myopathy. Treatment of the mitochondrial myopathy resulted in resolution of symptoms. This case demonstrates that mitochondrial myopathy may present in an adult with a symptom complex consistent with fibromyalgia.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>Our patient was a 41-year-old Caucasian woman with symptoms of fatigue, exercise intolerance, headache, and multiple trigger points. Treatment for fibromyalgia with a wide spectrum of medications including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antidepressants, gabapentin and pregabalin had no impact on her symptoms. A six-minute walk study demonstrated an elevated lactic acid level (5 mmol/L; normal < 2 mmol/L). Biochemical and genetic studies from a muscle biopsy revealed a mitochondrial myopathy. Our patient was started on a compound of coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) 200 mg, creatine 1000 mg, carnitine 200 mg and folic acid 1 mg to be taken four times a day. She gradually showed significant improvement in her symptoms over a course of several months.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This case demonstrates that adults diagnosed with fibromyalgia may have their symptom complex related to an adult onset mitochondrial myopathy. This is an important finding since treatment of mitochondrial myopathy resulted in resolution of symptoms.</p
