Extending the operating temperature, wavelength and frequency response of HgCdTe heterodyne detectors

Near ideal optical heterodyne performance was obtained at GHz IF frequencies in the 10 micrometer wavelength region with liquid nitrogen cooled HgCdTe photodiodes. Heterodyne NEP's as low as 2.7 x 10 to the minus 20th power W/Hz at 100MHz, 5.4 x 10 to the minus 20th power W/Hz at 1.5 GHz, and 9.4 x 19 to the minus 20th power W/Hz at 3 GHz were achieved. Various physical phenomena which occur within a photodiode and affect heterodyne operation were examined in order to assess the feasibility of extending the operating temperature, wavelength, and frequency response of these HgCdTe photomixers

Residents\u27 Perceptions and Attitudes Towards Native American Gaming (NAG) in Kansas: Proximity and Number of Trips to NAG Activity

This study assessed the perceptions and attitudes toward Native American Gaming (NAG) development in the State of Kansas. By using the resident support for tourism model developed by Perdue, Long, and Allen (1990), this study assessed perceptions and attitudes of residents in relation to their proximity to NAG activity and their number of visits to Native American casinos in the last 12 months. A survey was administered to 1038 households on a population proportionate basis in Brown County (35.65%), Doniphan County (25.30%), and Jackson County (39.05%) in the State of Kansas. Significant differences were found between distance from NAG activity and the perception of overcrowding in the county. Additionally, significant differences were noted between number of visits and the perception of income benefits, employment opportunities, condition of the local economy, quality of life in the county, entertainment opportunities, illegal drug activities, standard of living, meeting interesting people, social opportunities and overall quality of life

Residents\u27 Perceptions And Attitudes Towards Native American Gaming (NAG) In Kansas: Demographics, Policies & Future Development

This study applies a tourism model developed by Perdue, Long, and Allen ( 1990) to investigate residents\u27 perceptions of Native American Gambling in Kansas. A survey was administered to 1038 households, on a population proportionate basis, in Brown County (35 .65% ), Doniphan County (25.30% ), and Jackson County (39.05% ). Results indicated several relationships among perceived impacts of NAG development, including the respondent\u27s gender, gaming trips, age, employment status, and income level. Additionally, this study identified an association or dependence between the resident\u27s perceived future of the community and support for additional NAG development, support for restrictive NAG development policies, and support for additional taxes

NH3 in IRC plus 10216

Ammonia was detected in the circumstellar envelope of IRC +10216 by means of three infrared absorption lines in the nu sup 2 band around 950/cm. The lines are fully resolved at a resolution of 0.22 km/sec and indicate that most of the circumstellar gas is accelerated to expansion velocities around 14 km/sec within a few stellar radii. The NH3 profiles indicate a rotational temperature between 400 and 700 K, and H2 density between 10 to the 8th power/cu cm and 10 to the 10th power/cu cm, and NH3 column density of 10 to the 17th power/sq cm. The H2 density indicates that the mass of the circumstellar envelope within a 1 arcsec radius is approximately 0.1 solar masses

Ladies on the Label: A Meta-Analysis of Stereotypes in Advertising

This thesis explores the origins of modern-day racism and sexism by combining a meta-analysis with an in-depth historical examination of the Aunt Jemima and Betty Crocker campaigns. The ten studies used in the meta-analysis were selected and analyzed based on criteria developed from the research question and literature review. The researcher made three major conclusions based on the meta-analysis results: 1) It is not only important that minorities are shown in media images, but how they are shown; 2) stereotypes can sometimes mold viewpoints about the stereotyped member(s) of society; and 3) the consumer psyche provides further evidence that viewing stereotypes affects viewpoints. When comparing the meta-analysis results to the Aunt Jemima and Betty Crocker campaigns, the researcher found that the icons and their histories parallel America’s historic perpetuation of racist and sexist issues

Connecting Emotions to Behavioral Outcomes

The field of positive psychology has emerged within the last decade and focuses on investigating happiness and what constitutes a satisfying life (Seligman, 2011; Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). One of the main purposes of positive psychology is to identify resources that can be used to promote psychologically beneficial outcomes (Fredrickson, 2001). Two positive psychological outcomes that can build resources to overcome negative circumstances and lead to a fulfilling life are resilience and well-being. A theory proposed by Fredrickson (1998) that offers a process by which individuals can enhance well-being and resilience is the broaden-and-build theory. Through this theory, it is hypothesized that experiencing positive affect can broaden an individual’s thoughts and actions, which can in turn build lasting personal outcomes (i.e., resilience and well-being; Fredrickson, 2001). The current study draws upon the tenets of the broaden-and-build theory to identify processes that may help clarify the connection between positive affect and positive psychological outcomes. Specifically, the main purpose of the current study was to determine if savoring strategies mediate the relationships between positive affect and positive psychological outcomes. Participants included two hundred and eighty-nine college students who were recruited to complete a series of online surveys. In regard to gender, 186 (64.4%) participants identified as a woman and 101 (34.9%) participants identified as a man. Results of the study revealed that positive affect was directly and indirectly related to positive psychological outcomes (i.e., resilience and well-being). Of importance, savoring in the moment partially explained the link between positive affect and positive psychological outcomes. Implications to theory and clinical practice are discussed

Paradise Found? Black Gay Men in Atlanta: An Exploration of Community

This study examines the ways in which Black gay men in Atlanta create and experience community and culture every day, notwithstanding those discursive sources that situate life for Black gay men as particularly troubled. Drawing on ethnographic methods, including participant observation and interviewing, I attempt to show the complexity of Black gay men by exploring their world in Atlanta, Georgia, a city that has increasingly become known as a Black Gay Mecca. Qualitative research examining the ways Black gay men create and experience community has the potential to broaden academic discourses that have increasingly medicalized the Black gay male experience, and complicate popular social sentiment which (when recognizing the existence of Black gay men) often posits their life as one dimensional or dimensionless

Gaining Real-World Experience in Information Security: A Roadmap for a Service-Learning Course

Students need real-world experience. Industry needs graduating students entering the workforce to be skilled in relevant subject matter, critical thinking, and communication skills. Community-based nonprofit organizations, as well as small businesses, need help in building organizational capacity. Instructors also benefit from periodic observation of organizational work in the instructor’s area of teaching. A service-learning course that is focused on capacity building is a means to reach all of these goals. This article presents a roadmap for teaching a service-learning course in information security risk assessment. Students work in teams on a term-long project conducting an on-site risk assessment, making security recommendations, and producing and presenting a final security risk report to an organization’s management.
