Broken Symmetry as a Stabilizing Remnant

The Goldberger-Wise mechanism enables one to stabilize the length of the warped extra dimension employed in Randall-Sundrum models. In this work we generalize this mechanism to models with multiple warped throats sharing a common ultraviolet brane. For independent throats this generalization is straight forward. If the throats possess a discrete interchange symmetry like Z_n the stabilizing dynamics may respect the symmetry, resulting in equal throat lengths, or they may break it. In the latter case the ground state of an initially symmetric configuration is a stabilized asymmetric configuration in which the throat lengths differ. We focus on two- (three-) throat setups with a Z_2 (Z_3) interchange symmetry and present stabilization dynamics suitable for either breaking or maintaining the symmetry. Biographical NoteLouis Sandy Maisel was born on October 25, 1945, in Buffalo, New York. He attended Harvard, where he became involved with various campus and political organizations, and Columbia University, where he earned his Ph.D. in political science. In 1971 he settled in Maine, working on Bill Hathaway’s campaign for Senate, teaching at Colby College, and volunteering for Maine Democrats, including George Mitchell. In 1977, Maisel was the research director for the House Commission on Administrative Review. In 1978, he ran unsuccessfully in the congressional primary in Maine. At the time of this interview he was professor of government at Colby College and director of its Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement. EMS has continued its move from a product of training to being the result of education. A part of that process has been the proliferation of academic programs that focus upon emergency medical services related topical areas. As this trend continues, it is incumbent upon the educators who teach these curricula to determine the most desired and (therefore) effective designs for EMS degrees. This presentation will discuss the results of statewide online research of Paramedics in Kentucky, asking several questions to determine: - the current level of education among that population, - the types of EMS programs they completed, - perceived usefulness of an EMS degree by practitioners and - the course (programmatic) content most desired in all levels of an EMS degree
