Continuous fiber thermoplastic prepreg
A pultrusion machine employing a corrugated impregnator vessel to immerse multiple, continuous strand, fiber tow in an impregnating material, and an adjustable metered exit orifice for the impregnator vessel to control the quantity of impregnating material retained by the impregnated fibers, is provided. An adjustable height insert retains transverse rod elements within each depression of the corrugated vessel to maintain the individual fiber tows spread and in contact with the vessel bottom. A series of elongated heating dies, transversely disposed on the pultrusion machine and having flat heating surfaces with radiused edges, ensure adequate temperature exposed dwell time and exert adequate pressure on the impregnated fiber tows, to provide the desired thickness and fiber/resin ratio in the prepreg formed. The prepreg passing through the pulling mechanism is wound on a suitable take-up spool for subsequent use. A formula is derived for determining the cross sectional area opening of the metering device. Interstellar 12C/13C from CH+ absorption lines: Results from an extended survey
The 12C/13C isotope ratio in the interstellar medium (ISM), and its evolution
with time, is an important tracer of stellar yields. Spatial variations of this
ratio can be used to study mixing in the ISM. We want to determine this ratio
and its spatial variations in the local ISM from CH+ absorption lines in the
optical towards early-type stars. The aim is to determine the average value for
the local ISM and study possible spatial variations. We observed a large number
of early-type stars with Feros to extend the sample of suitable target stars
for CH+ isotope studies. The best suited targets were observed with Uves with
higher signal-to-noise ratio and spectral resolution to determine the isotope
ratio from the interstellar CH+ lines. This study significantly expands the
number of 13CH+ detections. We find an average ratio of = 76.27 +- 1.94 or,
for f = 1/R, = (120.46 +- 3.02) 10^{-4}. The scatter in f is 6.3
sigma(). This findings strengthens the case for chemical inhomogeneity in
the local ISM, with important implications for the mixing in the ISM. Given the
large scatter, the present-day value in the ISM is not significantly larger

Thermal tides in an assimilation of three years of Thermal Emission Spectromenter data from Mars Global Surveyor
Introduction. Thermal tides are particularly prominent in the Mars atmosphere with the result that temperature and wind fields have a strong dependence on local solar time (LT). Tides include westward propagating migrating (sun-synchronous) waves driven in response to solar heating and additional nonmigrating waves resulting from zonal variations in the thermotidal forcing. Zonal modulation of forcing can arise from longitudinal variations of the boundary (topography and surface thermal inertia) and radiatively active aerosols (dust and water ice clouds). Nonmigrating tides appear as diurnally varying upslope/ downslope circulations within the near-surface boundary layer that, like their migrating counterparts, are also able to propagate vertically to aerobraking altitudes in the lower thermosphere. The Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) has yielded atmospheric temperature profiles with unprecedented latitude and longitude coverage that has provided the basis for characterizing the seasonal evolution of tides and stationary waves [1]. However, the twice-daily observations (2 am and 2 pm LT) are insufficient to unambiguously resolve the sunsynchronous tides. Recently the technique of data assimilation has been sufficiently developed for Mars to yield a dynamically consistent set of thermal and dynamic fields suitable for detailed investigations of various aspects of the martian circulations system [2,3,4,5]. We will refer to this data set an the TES Reanalysis, which represents the current best estimate of the evolving state of the martian atmosphere during the MGS mission. The assimilated thermal and dynamical fields provide a means of assessing circulation variability and transport capability reflecting the variability of the actual Mars atmosphere
Investigations of a bearing fault detector for railroad bearings
The laboratory tests are described which were conducted on new and damaged bearings to determine the feasibility of using high-frequency vibration as a diagnostic tool. A high-frequency band pass filter and demodulator was assembled to permit field measurements of the high-frequency vibrations. Field tests were conducted on an actual truck and on an axle assembly run in a grease test rig. These field tests were directed toward demonstration of the suitability and capabilities of the high-frequency technique for field application. Two specific areas of field application were identified as being cost effective for railroad use. One area is the examination of railroad roller bearings at a derailment site, and the second is as a wayside detector to supplement present hot box detectors for defective roller bearings

Safe use of symbols in handover documentation for medical teams
Concern has been reported about the safe use of medical abbreviations in documents such as handover sheets and medical notes, especially when information is being communicated between staff of different specialties (BBC 2008, Sheppard et al. 2008). This article describes a study to investigate whether the use of symbols in handover documentation that is shared within and between multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) has similar safety implications. We asked 19 healthcare professionals from a range of specialties to identify 45 different combinations of 38 individual symbols. The symbols and combinations of symbols were extracted from 102 handover sheets taken from 6 different healthcare contexts in 4 London hospitals. Three symbols proposed in Microsoft's Common User Interface guidelines for alert symbols were also included. Results reveal that while some symbols are well understood, many others are either ambiguous or unknown. These results have implications for the safe use of symbols in medical documents, including paper and electronic handover documents and Electronic Patient Records (EPRs), especially where teams comprise individuals from different professional backgrounds, i.e. MDTs. Assessing the potential benefit of trade facilitation : A global perspective
The relationships between trade facilitation, trade flows, and capacity building are complex and challenging to assess, both empirically and in implementation. The authors measure and estimate the relationship between trade facilitation and trade flows across 75 countries in global trade, considering four important categories: port efficiency, customs environment, regulatory environment, and service sector infrastructure. A gravity model is employed that accounts for bilateral trade flows in manufactured goods in 2000-01 between the 75 countries, using traditional factors such as GDP, distance, language, and trade areas, and is augmented by the trade facilitation measures in the four categories for each country. The results suggest that both imports and exports for a country and for the world will increase with improvements in these trade facilitation measures. Potential gains from trade facilitation reforms are predicted by using the estimated parameters. The gains from trade facilitation are presented by comparing the gains across geographical regions and trade facilitation categories, and by domestic and partner improvements. The total gain in trade flow in manufacturing goods from trade facilitation improvements in all the four areas is estimated to be $377 billion. All regions gain in imports and exports. Most regions gain more in terms of exports than imports, in large part through increasing exports to the OECD market. The most important ingredient in getting these gains, particularly to the OECD market, is the country's own trade facilitation efforts. Space station integrated propulsion and fluid systems study
This Databook addresses the integration of fluid systems of the Space Station program. It includes a catalog of components required for the Space Station elements fluid systems and information on potential hardware commonality. The components catalog is in four parts. The first part lists the components defined for all the fluid systems identified in EP 2.1, Space Station Program Fluid Systems Configuration Databook. The components are cross-referenced in three sections. Section 2.1 lists the components by the fluid system in which they are used. Section 2.2 lists the components by type. Section 2.3 lists by the type of fluid media handled by the component. The next part of the catalog provides a description of the individual component. This section (2.4) is made up of data retrieved from Martin Marietta Denver Aerospace component data base. The third part is an assessment of propulsion hardware technology requirements. Section 2.5 lists components identified during the study as requiring development prior to flight qualification. Finally, Section 2.6 presents the results of the evaluation of commonality between components. The specific requirements of each component have been reviewed and duplication eliminated
