    Welfare Impact of Information with Experiments: The Crucial Role of the Price Elasticity of Demand

    This paper focuses on the welfare effects of information computed from experimental methods eliciting willingness-to-pay. First, a theoretical model shows that the size of the welfare variation is related to the elasticity of the demand under the absence of information about a characteristic. Second, our estimates indicate that consumer demand from a laboratory auction is more price-elastic than time-series demand for similar products. As a result, the welfare change directly derived from individual willingness-to-pay is overestimated compared to the welfare change linked to an approach combining time-series demand with the mean willingness-to-pay premium.Experiment, Welfare, Consumers, Information, Demand

    CONSUMER DEMAND FOR AND ATTITUDES TOWARD ALTERNATIVE BEEF LABELING STRATEGIES IN FRANCE, GERMANY, AND THE UK

    A wide array of food safety scares and breakdowns have led to loss of consumer confidence in the quality and safety of beef products. To counteract such concerns, firms and regulators have the ability to utilize brands or labels to signal quality. Utilizing a mail survey in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, we analyzed consumer preferences for alternative beef labeling strategies. Using an ordered probit model and a double bounded logit model, we estimate consumer preferences for alternative beef labeling programs. In general, results suggest that consumers have more confidence in government mandated labels as opposed to private brands. French and German consumers place a higher level of importance on brands and labels than do UK consumers. Results also suggest that more than 90% of surveyed consumers desire a mandatory labeling program for beef produced from cattle fed genetically modified crops.Consumer/Household Economics, Demand and Price Analysis,

    This study compares consumer valuations of beef steaks from cattle produced without growth hormones or genetically modified corn in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In general, European consumers place a higher value on beef from cattle that have not been administered growth hormones and/or fed genetically modified corn than United States consumers. There is a larger divergence between the two cultures with regard to the issue of biotechnology and genetic engineering than with the issue of growth hormones.     Heparin and air filters reduce embolic events caused by intra-arterial cerebral angiography - A prospective, randomized trial

    Background-Intra-arterial cerebral angiography is associated with a low risk for neurological complications, but clinically silent ischemic events after angiography have been seen in a substantial number of patients.Methods and Results-In a prospective study, diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) before and after intra-arterial cerebral angiography and transcranial Doppler sonography during angiography were used to evaluate the frequency of cerebral embolism. One hundred fifty diagnostic cerebral angiographies were randomized into 50 procedures, each using conventional angiographic technique, or systemic heparin treatment throughout the procedure, or air filters between the catheter and both the contrast medium syringe and the catheter flushing. There was no neurological complication during or after angiography. Overall, DW-MRI revealed 26 new ischemic lesions in 17 patients (11%). In the control group, 11 patients showed a total of 18 lesions. In the heparin group, 3 patients showed a total of 4 lesions. In the air filter group, 3 patients exhibited a total of 4 lesions. The reduced incidence of ischemic events in the heparin and air filter groups compared with the control group was significantly different (P=0.002). Transcranial Doppler sonography demonstrated a large number of microembolic signals that was significantly lower in the air filter group compared with the heparin and control groups (P=0.01), which did not differ from each other.Conclusions-Air filters and heparin both reduce the incidence of silent ischemic events detected by DW-MRI after intra-arterial cerebral angiography and can potentially lower clinically overt ischemic complications. This may apply to any intra-arterial angiographic procedure

    Wilson chains are not thermal reservoirs

    Wilson chains, based on a logarithmic discretization of a continuous spectrum, are widely used to model an electronic (or bosonic) bath for Kondo spins and other quantum impurities within the numerical renormalization group method and other numerical approaches. In this short note we point out that Wilson chains can not serve as thermal reservoirs as their temperature changes by a number of order Delta E when a finite amount of energy Delta E is added. This proves that for a large class of non-equilibrium problems they cannot be used to predict the long-time behavior.Comment: 2 page

    Dewetting During Crystal Growth of (Cd,Zn)Te:In under Microgravity

    The phenomenon of "Dewetting" during crystal growth has been observed in several microgravity experiments for different semiconductor crystals. The results of these experiments showed an improvement of the material quality due to the contact-less growth of the crystals. A number of crystal growth techniques have been used to grow CZT. The most widely used is the growth from the melt by the Bridgman method. However the crucible, which is generally made of carbon-layered silica glass, causes a number of problems: solid-liquid interface curvature, spurious nucleation of grains and twins, thermal stresses during the cooling of the crystal. This work is concentrated on the growth of high resistivity (Cd,Zn)Te:In (CZT) crystals by using the phenomenon of dewetting and its application in the processing of CZT detectors. Two Cd0.9Zn0.1Te:In crystals were grown under microgravity on the Russian FOTON satellite in the Polizon facility in September 2007. One crystal was grown under a rotating magnetic field during the phase of homogenization to destroy the typical tellurium clusters in the melt. The other crystal was superheated with 20 K above the melting point. A third crystal has been grown on the ground in similar thermal conditions. Inspection of the surface of the space grown crystals gave the evidence of successful dewetting during the crystal growth. The influence of the dewetting on the material properties is shown by the results of optical and electrical characterization methods. Finally, CZT detectors have been processed from the grown part of the different crystals. The influence of dewetting on their performance will be studied by means of the detector measurements with X- and Gamma-ray sources

    Macrospin approximation and quantum effects in models for magnetization reversal

    The thermal activation of magnetization reversal in magnetic nanoparticles is controlled by the anisotropy-energy barrier. Using perturbation theory, exact diagonalization and stability analysis of the ferromagnetic spin-s Heisenberg model with coupling or single-site anisotropy, we study the effects of quantum fluctuations on the height of the energy barrier. Opposed to the classical case, there is no critical anisotropy strength discriminating between reversal via coherent rotation and via nucleation/domain-wall propagation. Quantum fluctuations are seen to lower the barrier depending on the anisotropy strength, dimensionality and system size and shape. In the weak-anisotropy limit, a macrospin model is shown to emerge as the effective low-energy theory where the microscopic spins are tightly aligned due to the ferromagnetic exchange. The calculation provides explicit expressions for the anisotropy parameter of the effective macrospin. We find a reduction of the anisotropy-energy barrier as compared to the classical high spin-s limit.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure

    Extension of Yeast Chronological Lifespan by Methylamine

    Background: Chronological aging of yeast cells is commonly used as a model for aging of human post-mitotic cells. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown on glucose in the presence of ammonium sulphate is mainly used in yeast aging research. We have analyzed chronological aging of the yeast Hansenula polymorpha grown at conditions that require primary peroxisome metabolism for growth. Methodology/Principal Findings: The chronological lifespan of H. polymorpha is strongly enhanced when cells are grown on methanol or ethanol, metabolized by peroxisome enzymes, relative to growth on glucose that does not require peroxisomes. The short lifespan of H. polymorpha on glucose is mainly due to medium acidification, whereas most likely ROS do not play an important role. Growth of cells on methanol/methylamine instead of methanol/ammonium sulphate resulted in further lifespan enhancement. This was unrelated to medium acidification. We show that oxidation of methylamine by peroxisomal amine oxidase at carbon starvation conditions is responsible for lifespan extension. The methylamine oxidation product formaldehyde is further oxidized resulting in NADH generation, which contributes to increased ATP generation and reduction of ROS levels in the stationary phase. Conclusion/Significance: We conclude that primary peroxisome metabolism enhanced chronological lifespan of H. polymorpha. Moreover, the possibility to generate NADH at carbon starvation conditions by an organic nitrogen source supports further extension of the lifespan of the cell. Consequently, the interpretation of CLS analyses in yeast should include possible effects on the energy status of the cell.

    The morality of attitudes toward nanotechnology: about God, techno-scientific progress, and interfering with nature

    Using survey data, we examine public attitudes toward and awareness of nanotechnology in Germany (N = 750). First, it is shown that a majority of the people are still not familiar with nanotechnology. In addition, diffusion of information about nanotechnology thus far mostly seems to reach men and people with a relative higher educational background. Also, pro-science and technology views are positively related with nanotech familiarity. Results further show that a majority of the people have an indifferent, ambiguous, or non-attitude toward nanotechnology. Multinomial logit analyses further reveal that nanotech familiarity is positively related with people’s attitudes. In addition, it is shown that traditional religiosity is unrelated to attitudes and that individual religiosity is weakly related to nanotechnology attitudes. However, moral covariates other than religiosity seem of major importance. In particular, our results show that more negative views on technological and scientific progress as well as more holistic views about the relation between people and the environment increase the likelihood of having a negative attitude toward nanotechnology

    Action-related information trumps system information: influencing consumers’ intention to reduce food waste

    In order to substantially reduce food waste at the household level, it is essential to change consumer behavior. Informing consumers about the food waste issue is a promising means of bringing about behavior change: research confirms that information can increase food waste reduction behavior. However, it has yet to be determined what kind of information is most effective and exactly how that information affects consumer food waste behavior. This study compares the effects of system vs. action-related information (i.e., knowing what impacts specific actions entail vs. knowing how specific actions can help to accomplish a goal) on behavioral intention towards food waste. That is, the study focuses on the effect of information on the role of food waste in the food system versus information of actions that can be taken to avoid it. Moreover, an adapted model of the Theory of Planned Behavior is used to assess how these information effects are mediated by consumers’ attitude, norms, and perceived behavioral control. Results from an online experiment with a between-subjects design (N = 2,248) show that action-related information significantly increases respondents’ intention to reduce food waste while system information has no significant effect. The change in behavioral intention in the action-related information group is ascribed to greater personal norm activation, more favorable attitudes towards food waste reduction, and higher perceived behavioral control of food waste behaviors. Even though system information does not significantly increase intention to reduce food waste, it results in more favorable attitudes towards food waste reduction. The findings provide insights for policy makers and NGOs on what type of information to consider when designing effective food waste reduction campaigns targeted at consumers, with action-related information supporting the opportunity for consumer behavior change
