A list of Chrysomelidae of Arkansas is brought up to date by inclusion of species in the reference collection in the University of Arkansas, the collection in the Zoological Institute of Leningrad, and the private collection of L. Medvedev, as well as those reported in the literature. The list consists of 232 species, subspecies, and varieties and the ecological data where known. One new species and one new variety are included

The Paternalistic Relationship: Authenticity and credibility as a source of healthy relationships

This article explores the how the Paternalistic Leadership model can be viewed as part of a relationship-based paradigm of leadership, and can incorporate concepts such as credibility and authenticity. The review highlights the need to understand paternalistic leadership as an approach to establishing productive relationships within a cultural context, with implications for researchers and practitioners in both collectivist and individualistic cultures

On a generalization of Lie(kk): a CataLAnKe theorem

We define a generalization of the free Lie algebra based on an nn-ary commutator and call it the free LAnKe. We show that the action of the symmetric group S2n−1S_{2n-1} on the multilinear component with 2n−12n-1 generators is given by the representation S2n−11S^{2^{n-1}1}, whose dimension is the nnth Catalan number. An application involving Specht modules of staircase shape is presented. We also introduce a conjecture that extends the relation between the Whitehouse representation and Lie(kk).Comment: 14 page

Identification of the Presence of the Restoration Concept in Seventh-day Adventist Nursing Programs in the United States

Problem. In 1976 Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) nursing educational leaders adopted a statement of philosophy and goals that incorporated the concept of restoring humans to God\u27s image. Although Adventist education was founded upon restoration themes, no empirical evidence indicates that nursing faculty and students perceive restoration as important or evident in nursing education today. It was the purpose of this study to determine the extent to which the concept of restoration is manifested in SDA nursing programs in the United States. Method. Ten summary statements provide a definition of restoration consistent with the beliefs and teachings of the SDA church. An SDA Concept of Restoration Inventory was developed from the 10 summary statements to determine student and faculty perceptions of the restoration theme. The Inventory was used to measure the extent to which faculty and students perceived restoration concepts to be manifested in philosophy statements, program goals, course objectives, student-teacher interactions, and the teachers\u27 professional activities. The Inventory was administered to 67 full-time faculty and 208 associate degree and baccalaureate degree seniors in nine SDA nursing programs. Corroborative data was gathered from NLN Self-Study Reports and faculty and student interviews. Results. Findings from the Inventory, supported in part by document analyses, indicate that the restoration concept is manifested considerably more in philosophy statements than in program goals and more specific course objectives. Overall, both faculty and students rated the importance of restoration concepts above the actual existence of restoration in the programs. Students perceived restoration concepts to be significantly less apparent in all areas than did faculty. Divergence was highest between faculty and student responses on the perceived inclusion of restoration in teachers\u27 professional activities. Conclusions. Faculty, and particularly students, agree that the restoration concept is of major importance and should be manifested in all areas of the curriculum. Faculty and students alike indicate dissatisfaction with the inadequate inclusion of restoration concepts in statements of philosophy, program goals, course objectives, student-teacher interactions, and the teachers\u27 professional activities

A 24/7 Public Possession: Understanding the Dissonance and Grace of Being a Post- Secondary Leader

This study explores the perspectives and understandings of post-secondary leaders and their contexts as described through the qualitative experiences of 12 Maritime Canadian leaders (presidents and vice-presidents) who work in contemporary, publicly funded, post-secondary institutions. Four themes emerge: balancing daily dissonance, learning experientially to lead, creating learning spaces, and needing moments of grace. The research reveals that leaders seek deeper understandings of their work and their characterization.

Forest Conversion and Degradation in Papua New Guinea 1972-2002

Quantifying forest change in the tropics is important because of the role these forests play in the conservation of biodiversity and the global carbon cycle. One of the world's largest remaining areas of tropical forest is located in Papua New Guinea. Here we show that change in its extent and condition has occurred to a greater extent than previously recorded. We assessed deforestation and forest degradation in Papua New Guinea by comparing a land-cover map from 1972 with a land-cover map created from nationwide high-resolution satellite imagery recorded since 2002. In 2002 there were 28,251,967 ha of tropical rain forest. Between 1972 and 2002, a net 15 percent of Papua New Guinea's tropical forests were cleared and 8.8 percent were degraded through logging. The drivers of forest change have been concentrated within the accessible forest estate where a net 36 percent were degraded or deforested through both forestry and nonforestry processes. Since 1972, 13 percent of upper montane forests have also been lost. We estimate that over the period 1990–2002, overall rates of change generally increased and varied between 0.8 and 1.8 percent/yr, while rates in commercially accessible forest have been far higher—having varied between 1.1 and 3.4 percent/yr. These rates are far higher than those reported by the FAO over the same period. We conclude that rapid and substantial forest change has occurred in Papua New Guinea, with the major drivers being logging in the lowland forests and subsistence agriculture throughout the country with comparatively minor contributions from forest fires, plantation establishment, and mining

Forecasting Mental Health Care Cost for OIF and OEF Veterans

    Get PDF
The war in Iraq has been the longest sustained ground combat that the US military has engaged since the Vietnam War. With the ongoing battle against the global war on terrorism, many military personnel will be deployed to hostile areas in support of these operations. The effects of multiple deployment and combat engagement on the mental health of military personnel have been extensively studied. The impacts of mental illnesses, such as PTSD, are tied to longer period in the combat zone. Meeting the psychiatric needs of these veterans will be costly: rehabilitation, retraining, post combat counseling, long-term medical treatment, and even assisted living. This study attempts to predict the cost of mental healthcare for the OIF and OEF veterans. However, we failed to accomplish a forecast for the cost of psychiatric treatment for those veteran populations due to data limitations. This study will not only give a general forecast for mental health care cost in the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, but as well as explain any correlations between the various independent variables and mental health care costs. The data were compiled from various government documents and medical journals. Information received from VA Office of Policy, Planning and Preparedness was extensively used in this study
