We have ceased to be a nation in retreat : Margaret Thatcher e gli usi strategici del conflitto
This essay explores Margaret Thatcher’s political agency and leadership style in
terms of her reliance on discursive and media strategies which thrived on the “confusion”
of gender stereotypes and her ability to play with multiple, long-established
archetypes of women in power, characterized by violent and aggressive femininity.
Thatcher’s frequent self-projection as a “masculine” character, the “honorary man”
of British politics, and her special grip on British public opinion and fantasies, were
never disjointed from her ability to don, exploit, subvert and redirect “motherly’
(or at least “womanly”) performances at will, in order to serve her political agenda.
Focusing on her strategic deployment of a rhetoric and discourses of aggression,
divisiveness, conflict and war, the essay highlights Thatcher’s ability to re-create
and keep alive the idea of a national community always under siege, where extraordinary
economic, disciplinary and defence measure were required in order to resist
and overcome domestic and foreign “enemies”. The Falklands War will be taken as case study, for it provides an outstanding example of Thatcher’s powerful revision
of female political authority against the backdrop of the conventionally masculine,
heroic imaginary of war. Her masterly and coterminous performances as war leader
and “super-mother” of the nation allowed for a complex and hybrid self-projection
which still acts as an empowering model whose disciplinary subtext entails a nostalgic
investment in imperial national history
The contribution of geomagnetic observatories and magnetic models to the study of secular variation and jerks in Antarctica
Some of the most interesting features of the geomagnetic field and its time variations are displayed in polar
areas. Observatory monthly means usually provide an excellent opportunity to study the temporal changes of the
magnetic field at a given location. Unfortunately, on the Antarctic continent the distribution of the permanent ground-
based observatories does not permit a uniform coverage of the examined area. Furthermore, the magnetic records are
characterized by intense external disturbances and noise that make the analysis of the magnetic field difficult. To improve our knowledge of the secular variation and detect the presence of secular variation impulses (geomagnetic
jerks) in Antarctica, we use both observatory data and the CM4 quiet time magnetic field model. In particular CM4
improves our knowledge of geomagnetic jerks over Antarctica through the study of the sign changes of the secular
acceleration maps

The tail of the Jurassic fish Leedsichthys problematicus (Osteichthyes: Actinopterygii) collected by Alfred Nicholson Leeds - an example of the importance of historical records in palaeontology
The specimen of the tail of Leedsichthys problematicus, now in The Natural History Museum, London, was one of the most spectacular fossil vertebrates from the Oxford Clay Formation of Peterborough, but as an isolated find it shares no bones in common with the holotype of the genus and species. However, a letter from Alfred Nicholson Leeds and related documents cast valuable new light on the excavation of the tail, indicating that it was discovered with cranial bones, gill-rakers, and two pectoral fins, thereby including elements that can potentially be compared with those of the holotype. The documents also clearly indicate that The Natural History Museum's specimen is not part of the same individual as any other numbered specimen of Leedsichthys as had been speculated on other occasions. The maximum size of the animal represented by The Natural History Museum's specimen was possibly around 9 metres, considerably less than previous estimates of up to 27.6 metres for Leedsichthys. Historical documentary evidence should therefore be rigorously checked both when studying historical specimens in science, and in preparing text for museum display labels
In diverse industrial applications it is necessary the verification of the correct operation of the control strategies and automatism before being applied to the real process. In most of the cases, the inputs of the system, which in the real application would come from sensors, are generated artificially. Nevertheless, this type of test methodology does not allow to verify the correct dynamics of the controller because it is not simple to generate the same dynamics when these are connected to the real sensors. In order to avoid these restrictions in the verification, and when the applications justify it, platforms are usually developed to simulate the behavior of the specific application. Nevertheless, the use of these platforms is exclusive to the application for which they were implemented and its cost of development is generally elevated. In this paper, it is presented a virtual environment that allows simulating different applications in a flexible and adaptable way to be used in different processes.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ
Simulación de la aplicación del tratamiento mecánico biológico a los residuos urbanos : El caso de la ciudad de General Pico
General Pico city has a stable population around 52,000 inhabitants. The final disposition of the domiciliary solid remaindes is an important problem to be solved in this city. The garbage is accumulated progressively having every time greater difficulty to be taken advantage of and recycled. The investigation presented here allowed to construct a computacional model that simulates the management and the present treatment of the urban remainders, including in he himself the application of Biological Mechanical Treatment (TMB) of different ways, offering the possibility in front of studying the behavior of this system different tie scenes with the population growth, the increase in the generation of remainders, the capacity of the present plant (“Cooperative of Recycled Work of Don Alberto Limitada”), and the incidence in the distribution of key factors like reduction, reusability, recycling and power recovery.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ
Radio Echo Sounding (RES) investigations at Talos Dome (East Antarctica): bedrock topography and ice thickness
Radio echo sounding measurements were collected during two Antarctic expeditions to determine the ice thickness
and the sub-glacial morphology of Talos Dome in the region around 72°48'S; 159°06'E (about 6400 km2)
on the edge of the East Antarctic plateau adjacent to Victoria Land in the western Ross Sea sector. The increasing
interest in this region is due to the fact that in this area the ice accumulation is higher than in other sites in
East Antarctica. Because of this, Talos Dome could be a new site for a project of a deep ice core drilling to obtain
information on climate changes near the coast of Antarctica. In this frame, the knowledge of the bedrock topography
is of great importance to choose the best location for the drilling site. In this paper, airborne radio echo
sounding results from two Antarctic expeditions (1997 and 1999) are presented. Bedrock topography in bi- and
three-dimensions for the Talos Dome region are discussed
The wellbeing of the animals is a determining factor in the quality, security and health of foods animal origin for human consumption.. The vitamins A, E and some trace minerals like selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn), are essential for the health and the performance of the dairy cows. They belong to the cellular antioxidant system, preventing harmful driving of the free radicals of oxygen upon the good operation of the immune system. Among the different nutrients with antioxidant activity, α-tocopherol and the β- carotene plays a preponderant roll in the prevention of the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, present in cellular membranes. The investigation presented here allowed building up a computational model that simulates the distribution of the different sanguineous stereoisomer of vitamins during the peripartum in dairy cows, offering the possibility of studying the behavior of this system with different levels of supplementation prepartum.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ
Missing The Forest For The Trees: A Lack Of Upper Extremity Physical Performance Testing In Sports Physical Therapy
# Background
Despite shoulder and elbow injuries being common in athletics, return to sport and reinjury rates are less than ideal. These outcomes may be driven by the absence of evidence-informed testing to determine an athlete's readiness for sport.
# Purpose
The purpose of this study was to explore the reported frequency of physical performance testing for return to sport readiness by physical therapists treating athletes with upper extremity injuries and to identify potential barriers that may limit use of these tests. A secondary aim was to compare practice patterns of clinicians with sports physical therapy specialty certification to clinicians without.
# Study Design
International, cross-sectional survey using purposive sampling.
# Methods
A survey instrument was created to assess the frequency of use of physical performance tests by physical therapists treating athletes with upper extremity injuries, as well as the barriers limiting the use of these tests. The 19-question online survey was distributed via email and Twitter among sports physical therapists. Independent t-tests and Chi Square analyses were conducted to determine differences in practice patterns between physical therapists with and without specialization and the frequency of potential barriers that may limit the use of these tests.
# Results
Four hundred ninety-eight participants met study eligibility and completed the survey. Fewer than half of participants reported using any physical performance test in making return to sport decisions for athletes with upper extremity injuries. The greatest barriers to the use of physical performance tests were a lack of equipment followed by lack of understanding of the literature, lack of time, and lack of supporting literature. Sports specialist clinicians were significantly more likely (p\<0.001) to use physical performance tests than non-specialist clinicians (71.6% versus 36.3%).
# Conclusion
In this survey of physical therapists (n=498), the majority admit to not using physical performance tests when making return to sport decisions for athletes with upper extremity injuries regardless of specialization.
Physical therapists have an opportunity to improve the utilization physical performance testing in the upper extremity athlete in hopes of reducing injury recurrence and enhance return to sport rates.
