The color of polarization in cuprate superconductors
A technique for the identification of individual anisotropic grains in a heterogeneous and opaque material involves the observation of grain color in reflected light through crossed polarizers (color of polarization). Such colors are generally characteristic of particular phases. When grains of many members of the class of hole carrier cuprate superconductors are so viewed, using a xenon light source (600 K color temperature), a characteristic color of polarization is observed. This color was studied in many of these cuprate superconductors and a strong correlation was found between color and the existence of superconductivity. One of the members of the electron carrier cuprate superconductors (Nd(1.85)Ce(.15)CuO(4-x) was examined and found that it possesses the same color of polarization as all the electron hole carrier cuprate superconductors so far examined. The commonality of the characteristic color in the cuprate superconductors indicated that the presence of this color is independent of the nature of charge carriers. The correlation of this color with existence of superconductivity suggests that the origin of the color relates to the origin of superconductivity in the cuprate superconductors. Protein folding using contact maps
We present the development of the idea to use dynamics in the space of
contact maps as a computational approach to the protein folding problem. We
first introduce two important technical ingredients, the reconstruction of a
three dimensional conformation from a contact map and the Monte Carlo dynamics
in contact map space. We then discuss two approximations to the free energy of
the contact maps and a method to derive energy parameters based on perceptron
learning. Finally we present results, first for predictions based on threading
and then for energy minimization of crambin and of a set of 6 immunoglobulins.
The main result is that we proved that the two simple approximations we studied
for the free energy are not suitable for protein folding. Perspectives are

Exact enumeration of Hamiltonian circuits, walks, and chains in two and three dimensions
We present an algorithm for enumerating exactly the number of Hamiltonian
chains on regular lattices in low dimensions. By definition, these are sets of
k disjoint paths whose union visits each lattice vertex exactly once. The
well-known Hamiltonian circuits and walks appear as the special cases k=0 and
k=1 respectively. In two dimensions, we enumerate chains on L x L square
lattices up to L=12, walks up to L=17, and circuits up to L=20. Some results
for three dimensions are also given. Using our data we extract several
quantities of physical interest
Case study in six sigma methadology : manufacturing quality improvement and guidence for managers
This article discusses the successful implementation of Six Sigma methodology in a high precision and critical process in the manufacture of automotive products. The Six Sigma define–measure–analyse–improve–control approach resulted in a reduction of tolerance-related problems and improved the first pass yield from 85% to 99.4%. Data were collected on all possible causes and regression analysis, hypothesis testing, Taguchi methods, classification and regression tree, etc. were used to analyse the data and draw conclusions. Implementation of Six Sigma methodology had a significant financial impact on the profitability of the company. An approximate saving of US$70,000 per annum was reported, which is in addition to the customer-facing benefits of improved quality on returns and sales. The project also had the benefit of allowing the company to learn useful messages that will guide future Six Sigma activities
Marker‐Assisted Backcrossing to Introgress Resistance to Fusarium Wilt Race 1 and Ascochyta Blight in C 214, an Elite Cultivar of Chickpea
Fusarium wilt (FW) and Ascochyta blight (AB) are two major constraints to chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) production. Therefore, two parallel marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC) programs by targeting foc1 locus and two quantitative trait loci (QTL) regions, ABQTL-I and ABQTL-II, were undertaken to introgress resistance to FW and AB, respectively, in C 214, an elite cultivar of chickpea. In the case of FW, foreground selection (FGS) was conducted with six markers (TR19, TA194, TAA60, GA16, TA110, and TS82) linked to foc1 in the cross C 214 × WR 315 (FW-resistant). On the other hand, eight markers (TA194, TR58, TS82, GA16, SCY17, TA130, TA2, and GAA47) linked with ABQTL-I and ABQTL-II were used in the case of AB by deploying C 214 × ILC 3279 (AB-resistant) cross. Background selection (BGS) in both crosses was employed with evenly distributed 40 (C 214 × WR 315) to 43 (C 214 × ILC 3279) SSR markers in the chickpea genome to select plant(s) with higher recurrent parent genome (RPG) recovery. By using three backcrosses and three rounds of selfing, 22 BC3F4 lines were generated for C 214 × WR 315 cross and 14 MABC lines for C 214 × ILC 3279 cross. Phenotyping of these lines has identified three resistant lines (with 92.7–95.2% RPG) to race 1 of FW, and seven resistant lines (with 81.7–85.40% RPG) to AB that may be tested for yield and other agronomic traits under multilocation trials for possible release and cultivation
Quality management in heavy duty manufacturing industry: TQM vs. Six Sigma
‘Is TQM a management fad?’ This question has been extensively documented in the quality management literature; and will be tackled in this research though a critical literature review on the area. ‘TQM versus Six-Sigma’ debate, which has also been a fundamental challenge in this research filed, is addressed by a thematic and chronological review on the peer papers. To evaluate this challenge in practice, a primary research in heavy duty machinery production industry have been conducted using a case-study on, J C Bamford Excavators Ltd (JCB), the largest European construction machinery producer. The result highlights that TQM is a natural foundation to build up Six-Sigma upon; and not surprisingly the quality yield in a TQM approach complemented by Six-sigma is far higher and more stable than when TQM with no Six-Sigma focus is being put in place; thus presenting the overall finding that TQM and Six Sigma are compliments, not substitutes. The study will be concluded with an overview on quality management approaches in the heavy duty manufacturing industry to highlight the way forward for the industry

Host Plant Resistance to Ascochyta Blight of Chickpea. Information Bulletin No. 82
Ascochyta blight (AB) caused by Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Labr. is an important and
widespread disease of chickpea worldwide. The disease is particularly severe under
cool and humid weather conditions. A large volume of literature is available on studies
related to various aspects of AB including biology, epidemiology and management
methods. In this bulletin, attempts have been made to briefl y describe the distribution,
economic importance, symptoms, causal organism, pathogen variability and host plant
resistance. Information on recent advances in host plant resistance of AB and detailed
descriptions of refi ned screening techniques developed at ICRISAT and elsewhere for
identifi cation of resistant sources are provided. This bulletin provides comprehensive
information on screening methods for AB, and will be useful to all researchers involved
in Ascochyta blight management through host plant resistance
Origin of Native Driving Force in Protein Folding
We derive an expression with four adjustable parameters that reproduces well
the 20x20 Miyazawa-Jernigan potential matrix extracted from known protein
structures. The numerical values of the parameters can be approximately
computed from the surface tension of water, water-screened dipole interactions
between residues and water and among residues, and average exposures of

Genetic variation in genes for the xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes CYP1A1, EPHX1, GSTM1, GSTT1, and GSTP1 and susceptibility to colorectal cancer in Lynch syndrome.
Individuals with Lynch syndrome are predisposed to cancer due to an inherited DNA mismatch repair gene mutation. However, there is significant variability observed in disease expression likely due to the influence of other environmental, lifestyle, or genetic factors. Polymorphisms in genes encoding xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes may modify cancer risk by influencing the metabolism and clearance of potential carcinogens from the body. In this retrospective analysis, we examined key candidate gene polymorphisms in CYP1A1, EPHX1, GSTT1, GSTM1, and GSTP1 as modifiers of age at onset of colorectal cancer among 257 individuals with Lynch syndrome. We found that subjects heterozygous for CYP1A1 I462V (c.1384A\u3eG) developed colorectal cancer 4 years earlier than those with the homozygous wild-type genotype (median ages, 39 and 43 years, respectively; log-rank test P = 0.018). Furthermore, being heterozygous for the CYP1A1 polymorphisms, I462V and Msp1 (g.6235T\u3eC), was associated with an increased risk for developing colorectal cancer [adjusted hazard ratio for AG relative to AA, 1.78; 95% confidence interval, 1.16-2.74; P = 0.008; hazard ratio for TC relative to TT, 1.53; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-2.22; P = 0.02]. Because homozygous variants for both CYP1A1 polymorphisms were rare, risk estimates were imprecise. None of the other gene polymorphisms examined were associated with an earlier onset age for colorectal cancer. Our results suggest that the I462V and Msp1 polymorphisms in CYP1A1 may be an additional susceptibility factor for disease expression in Lynch syndrome because they modify the age of colorectal cancer onset by up to 4 years
