F-region drift velocities from incoherent-scatter measurements at Millstone Hill
F-region drift velocities measured at Millstone Hill from 1968 to 1974 are presented in tabular form. A brief description of the measurement procedures is also given
Calculation of conductivities and currents in the ionosphere
Formulas and procedures to calculate ionospheric conductivities are summarized. Ionospheric currents are calculated using a semidiurnal E-region neutral wind model and electric fields from measurements at Millstone Hill. The results agree well with ground based magnetogram records for magnetic quiet days
The N-Vortex Problem on a Symmetric Ellipsoid: A Perturbation Approach
We consider the N-vortex problem on a ellipsoid of revolution. Applying
standard techniques of classical perturbation theory we construct a sequence of
conformal transformations from the ellipsoid into the complex plane. Using
these transformations the equations of motion for the N-vortex problem on the
ellipsoid are written as a formal series on the eccentricity of the ellipsoid's
generating ellipse. First order equations are obtained explicitly. We show
numerically that the truncated first order system for the three-vortices system
on the symmetric ellipsoid is non-integrable.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
Functional-Anatomic Correlates of Individual Differences in Memory
SummaryMemory abilities differ greatly across individuals. To explore a source of these differences, we characterized the varied strategies people adopt during unconstrained encoding. Participants intentionally encoded object pairs during functional MRI. Principal components analysis applied to a strategy questionnaire revealed that participants variably used four main strategies to aid learning. Individuals' use of verbal elaboration and visual inspection strategies independently correlated with their memory performance. Verbal elaboration correlated with activity in a network of regions that included prefrontal regions associated with controlled verbal processing, while visual inspection correlated with activity in a network of regions that included an extrastriate region associated with object processing. Activity in regions associated with use of these strategies was also correlated with memory performance. This study reveals functional-anatomic correlates of verbal and perceptual strategies that are variably used by individuals during encoding. These strategies engage distinct brain regions and may separately influence memory performance
Photon Conserving Radiative Transfer around Point Sources in multi-dimensional Numerical Cosmology
Many questions in physical cosmology regarding the thermal and ionization
history of the intergalactic medium are now successfully studied with the help
of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. Here we present a numerical method
that solves the radiative transfer around point sources within a three
dimensional cartesian grid. The method is energy conserving independently of
resolution: this ensures the correct propagation speeds of ionization fronts.
We describe the details of the algorithm, and compute as first numerical
application the ionized region surrounding a mini-quasar in a cosmological
density field at z=7.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ
Infanticide in Chimpanzees: Taphonomic Case Studies from Gombe
Objectives
We present a study of skeletal damage to four chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) infanticide victims from Gombe National Park, Tanzania. Skeletal analysis may provide insight into the adaptive significance of infanticide by examining whether nutritional benefits sufficiently explain infanticidal behavior. The nutritional hypothesis would be supported if bone survivorship rates and skeletal damage patterns are comparable to those of monkey prey. If not, other explanations, such as the resource competition hypothesis, should be considered. Methods
Taphonomic assessment of two chimpanzee infants included description of breakage and surface modification, data on MNE, %MNE, and bone survivorship. Two additional infants were assessed qualitatively. The data were compared to published information on monkey prey. We also undertook a review of published infanticide cases. Results
The cases were intercommunity infanticides (one male and three female infants) committed by males. Attackers partially consumed two of the victims. Damage to all four infants included puncture marks and compression fractures to the cranium, crenulated breaks to long bones, and incipient fractures on ribs. Compared to monkey prey, the chimpanzee infants had an abundance of vertebrae and hand/foot bones. Conclusions
The cases described here suggest that chimpanzees may not always completely consume infanticide victims, while reports on chimpanzee predation indicated that complete consumption of monkey prey usually occurred. Infanticidal chimpanzees undoubtedly gain nutritional benefits when they consume dead infants, but this benefit may not sufficiently explain infanticide in this species. Continued study of infanticidal and hunting behavior, including skeletal analysis, is likely to be of interest
Lutheran Elementary Schools in the Central District of the Missouri Synod
This discourse presents significant data relating to major developments in the elementary school system of the Central District of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States. Some inferences are made which are based on information pertaining to the school system of the entire synod. These data, however, are used and interpreted as it affects the schools in this district
Photoconductivity Parameters In Lithium Niobate
Measurements on a variety of doped (magnesium and/or iron) and undoped lithium niobate crystals in the oxidized state demonstrate an Arrhenius dependence of dark conductivity on reciprocal temperature between 460 and 590 K. All of the crystals had roughly the same conductivity and activation energy (1.21 eV) over the temperature range, implying that all have about the same free-carrier concentration and mobility. The enhanced photoconductivity of magnesium-doped lithium niobate is attributed to a greatly reduced trapping cross section of Fe3+ for electrons, the smaller cross section being due to a changed substitutional site for Fe3+. The Fe3+ trapping cross section is calculated from photoconductivity data to be of order 10-18 m2 in undoped lithium niobate. This implies a photoelectron lifetime of order 6x10-11 s in a relatively pure (2-ppm Fe) oxidized crystal
High-Precision Entropy Values for Spanning Trees in Lattices
Shrock and Wu have given numerical values for the exponential growth rate of
the number of spanning trees in Euclidean lattices. We give a new technique for
numerical evaluation that gives much more precise values, together with
rigorous bounds on the accuracy. In particular, the new values resolve one of
their questions.Comment: 7 pages. Revision mentions alternative approach. Title changed

Avalanche boron fusion by laser picosecond block ignition with magnetic trapping for clean and economic reactor
After the very long consideration of the ideal energy source by fusion of the
protons of light hydrogen with the boron isotope 11 (boron fusion HB11) the
very first two independent measurements of very high reaction gains by lasers
basically opens a fundamental breakthrough. The non-thermal plasma block
ignition with extremely high power laser pulses above petawatt of picosecond
duration in combination with up to ten kilotesla magnetic fields for trapping
has to be combined to use the measured high gains as proof of an avalanche
reaction for an environmentally clean, low cost and lasting energy source as
potential option against global warming. The unique HB11 avalanche reaction is
are now based on elastic collisions of helium nuclei (alpha particles) limited
only to a reactor for controlled fusion energy during a very short time within
a very small volume.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to Proceedings 2nd Symposium High
