Consequences of Categorical Labeling of Preschool Children

    Get PDF
The use of categorical diagnostic labels prescribed in P.L. 94--142 with children below school age is examined in this article. National practices relative to categorical labeling are reviewed, and questions are posed concerning the consequences of categorical labeling for children from 3 to 6 years old. Data from the state of New Hampshire concerning the frequency of usage for specific categorical labels are presented and are found to be consistent with national trends. Data are presented on the number of children who transition from non-categorical early intervention programs serving children birth to 3 years into categorical preschool programs for children 3 through 5 years. Almost one-third of all children served in early intervention are found not to be eligible for preschool services because of the requirement for a categorical label. The roles of demographic factors related to place of residence, age, and local school policies in deciding who is eligible for services and what diagnostic category is assigned, were considered. Finally, the consequences of categorical labeling for children, parents, and programs are discussed

Geometric Field Stability and Normal Field Curvature of Solution Sets of Ordinary Differential Equations in Two Variables

The classical linearization approach to stability theory determines whether or not a system is stable in the vicinity of its equilibrium points. This classical approach partly depends on the validity of the linear approximation. The definition of stability developed in this article takes a different approach and uses a curvature function to assess the relative locations of solutions within a field of solutions (the underlying solution set of the ODE). The present approach involves calculations that directly yield stability information, without having to enter into the often lengthy eigenvalue-eigenvector method. The present results both complement and are compatible with the classical results based on linearization near an equilibrium point

Treatment of Mental Disorders in Pregnancy: A Review of Neuroleptics, Antidepressants, and Lithium Carbonate

Pregnancy is frequently complicated by the development or recurrence of a serious mental disorder; neurotic, major affective, and psychotic illnesses have all been observed (1-4). When a major mental disorder arises in a pregnant woman and threatens the health or life of the patient and/or fetus, it should be treated early and aggressively to minimize complications and forestall the advance of the disease. Nonbiologic methods like individual psychotherapy, couples or family therapy, social casework, and hospitalization in a supportive, structured milieu should form the first line of treatment. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be the treatment of choice for some patients, e.g., a first trimester mother with a life-threatening episode of bipolar illness. If the illness persists in spite of nonbiological interventions, and if the risks of the inadequately treated disease outweigh the risks associated with a potentially useful medication, then a trial of that medication is clearly indicated

The Drivers for Acceptance of Tablet PCs by Faculty in a College of Business

Utilizing the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model developed by Venkatesh, et al. (2003) this study extends our understanding of technology acceptance, provides insights into the use of UTAUT as a tool to increase our understanding of acceptance, and identifies areas that administrators should consider when proposing a new technology in a College of Business setting. UTAUT is a useful tool for managers to predict the likelihood of success for new technology introductions and helps managers understand the drivers of acceptance in order to proactively design interventions targeted at users that may be less inclined to adopt and use new systems. The Tablet PC is a new technology being introduced in various settings including faculty and student use in higher education. This study applies UTAUT prescriptively as a management tool to asses the user acceptance of Tablet PCs by the faculty of a College of Business at a large university in the United States. The results largely validate UTAUT, although the findings suggest that certain variables, namely performance expectancy and voluntariness, are the most salient drivers of acceptance when applied to business faculty in higher education

Integrating Counselor Teambuilding and Leadership Training into the Annual Honors Freshman Orientation Retreat

Teamwork and appropriate leadership skills are essential to anyone aspiring to be an effective leader. For my Capstone Experience/Thesis project, I set out to analyze three defined problems that plague the counselor group of the Honors Freshman Orientation Retreat, and to create and implement a solution for the three problems as a whole. After analyzing each problem, I concluded that the source of the three problems relates specifically to the lack of training. Therefore, the desired situation or goal in approaching these problems was to create a solution that will encourage the counselors to overcome their prescribed ideals about the H4 and to improve on the unsatisfactory elements of each problem and to increase their effectiveness as a team and as leaders. In accordance with the above-stated goal, the focus of the training was to engage the counselors in specified training that applies directly to their situation
