    Planetary atlases

    Get PDF
Two kinds of planetary map atlases are in production. Atlases of the first kind contain reduced-scale versions of maps in hard-bound books with dimensions of 11 x 14 inches. These new atlases are intended to: (1) provide concise but comprehensive references to the geography of the planets needed by planetary scientists and others; and (2) allow inexpensive access to the planetary map dataset without requiring acquisition and examination of tens or hundreds of full-size map sheets. Two such atlases have been published and a third is in press. Work was begun of an Atlas of the Satellite of the Outer Planets. The second kind of atlas is a popular or semi-technical version designed for commercial publication and distribution. The first edition, The Atlas of the Solar System, is nearly ready for publication. New funding and contracting constraints now make it unlikely that the atlas can be published in the format originally planned. Currently, the possibility of publishing the maps through the U.S. Geological Survey as a series of folios in the I-map series is being explored. The maps are global views of each solid-surface body of the Solar System. Each map shows airbrushed relief, albedo, and, where available, topography. A set of simplified geologic maps is also included. All of the maps are on equal-area projections. Scales are 1:40,000,000 for the Earth and Venus; 1:2,000,000 for the Saturnian satellites Mimas and Enceladus and the Uranian satellite Miranda; 1:100,000 for the Martian satellites, Phobos and Deimos; and 1:10,000,000 for all other bodies

Development of a WNT-selective oncolytic adenovirus for imaging the therapy of colorectal cancers.

PhDIntroduction: The concept of oncolytic adenoviruses has been validated in preclinical studies but clinical trials have demonstrated that the virus spread remains limited and the virus fails to infect all cancer cells in a tumour. Arming an oncolytic virus with a therapeutic trans gene would enhance the antitumour effect of these viruses by killing adjacent non-infected cells. The aim of this thesis is to test armed oncolytic adenoviruses targeting a constitutive activation of the Wnt signalling pathway in pre-clinical models of colorectal cancer. Methods: The Nail symporter was inserted into the genome of Wnt-selective oncolytic adenoviruses to visualise adenoviral spread in the tumour and assess image-guided radiotherapy. Results: In vitro testing of the virus has demonstrated that the Wnt-selectivity of the virus remains intact. The virus we generated has an equal or greater cytopathic effect than wild type adenovirus in Wnt-expressing cancer cell lines. The ability of the infected cells to take up iodine has been confirmed by iodine uptake assays. The virus has been injected into subcutaneous human tumour implants in nude mice. Images obtained with a SPECT/CT camera have demonstrated that viral propagation can be visualised in vivo. Finally, we have used the imaging data to determine the correct timing for the administration of therapeutic doses of 131 I. Conclusion: We have validated a non invasive method to image viral propagation and transgene expression in a preclinical model of colonic cancer. Sequential imaging can provide information on the ideal time point for therapeutic intervention. In pilot experiments, the aim was to exploit the potential of the Nail symporter for the concentration of radioactive iodine, but it did not lead to increased therapeutic efficacy in vivo in preclinical models. There is strong evidence that if these experiments were repeated, therapeutic efficacy could he demonstrated

Normative perceptual estimates for 91 healthy subjects age 60–75: impact of age, education, employment, physical exercise, alcohol, and video gaming

    Get PDF
Visual perception serves as the basis for much of the higher level cognitive processing as well as human activity in general. Here we present normative estimates for the following components of visual perception: the visual perceptual threshold, the visual short-term memory capacity and the visual perceptual encoding/decoding speed (processing speed) of Visual Short-Term Memory (VSTM) based on an assessment of 91 healthy subjects aged 60-75. The estimates were modelled from input from a whole-report assessment based on A Theory of Visual Attention (TVA). In addition to the estimates themselves, we present correlational data, and multiple regression analyses between the estimates and self-reported demographic data and lifestyle variables. The regression statistics suggest that education level, video gaming activity and employment status may significantly impact the encoding/decoding speed of VTSM but not the capacity of VSTM nor the visual perceptual threshold. The estimates will be useful for future studies into the effects of various types of intervention and training on cognition in general and visual attention in particular

Bone and soft tissue tumors of hip and pelvis

    Get PDF
AbstractObjective is to identify epidemiologic and radiologic criteria allowing specific diagnoses of tumors and tumor-like lesions in the hip region and pelvis, and to optimize pre-operative staging.Patients with pelvic tumors are usually older, and their tumors are larger relative to patients with tumors in extremities. The majority of tumors in the pelvis are malignant (metastases, myeloma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing-, osteo-, and MFH/fibrosarcoma), while those in the proximal femur are in majority benign (fibrous dysplasia, solitary bone cyst, and osteoid osteoma). Soft tissue masses in the thigh in the elderly are typically sarcomas without tumor specific signs.Common tumor-like lesions occurring in the hip and pelvis that can mimic neoplasm are: infections (including tuberculosis), insufficiency/avulsion fractures, cysts, fibrous dysplasia, aneurysmal bone cyst, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, and Paget's disease.Local MR staging is based on the compartmental anatomy. The psoas and gluteal muscles are easily invaded by sarcoma originating in the ileum. The pectineus muscle protects the neurovascular bundle at the level of the hip. The thigh is separated into three compartments, some structures (Sartorius muscle) cross borders between compartments. Immobile joints (SI-joints, osteoarthritic hip) are relatively easily crossed by sarcoma and giant cell tumor

For example, physicians were not on time, a time for consultation was limited, and physicians were not hospitable. These problems were due to lack of physicians’ organisational commitments. This study aimed at identifying the influence of organisational commitments towards the performance of physicians at the outpatient installation of Batang Regency Public Hospital. This was a quantitative studyusing a cross-sectional approach. Number of samples were 30 respondents. Data collection used a structured questionnaire. Data were presented descriptively and analytically using cross- tabulation and a Spearman’s Rank test performed using SPSS. The results of this research showed that the factor of affective commitment positively significantly related to the performance (rho=0.387;0.21 r 0.40; p value=0.035). Similarly, continuance commitmenthad significant relationship with the performance (rho=0.495;0.41 r 0.70; p value= 0.030). In addition,, normative commitment positivelysignificantly related to the performance (rho=0.401;0.21 r 0.40; p value=0.009). To sum up, organisational commitments consisted of affective commitment, continuance commitment, and normative commitment significantly related to the physicians’ performance. The hospital management needs to create convenient situation at the workplace, to provide reward equally, and to involve specialists in making a decision that relates to their expertise. The Achilles tendon Total Rupture Score is a responsive primary outcome measure:an evaluation of the Dutch version including minimally important change

    Get PDF
PURPOSE: Aim of this study was to evaluate the responsiveness of the Dutch version of the Achilles tendon Total Rupture Score (ATRS-NL). METHODS: Patients (N = 47) completed the ATRS-NL at 3 and 6 months after Achilles tendon rupture (ATR). Additionally, they filled out the Euroqol-5D-5L (EQ-5D-5L) and Global Rating of Change Score (GRoC). Effect sizes (ES) and standardized response means (SRM) were calculated. The anchor-based method for determining the minimally important change (MIC) was used. GRoC and improvement on the items mobility and usual activities on the EQ-5D-5L served as external criteria. The scores on these anchors were used to categorize patients' physical functioning as improved or unchanged between 3 and 6 months after ATR. Receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis was performed, with the calculation of the area under the ROC curve (AUC) and the estimation of MIC values using the optimal cut-off points. RESULTS: There was a large change (ES: 1.58) and good responsiveness (SRM: 1.19) of the ATRS-NL between 3 and 6 months after ATR. Using ROC analysis, the MIC values ranged from 13.5 to 28.5 for reporting improvement on EQ-5D-5L mobility and GRoC, respectively. The AUC of improvement on mobility and improvement on GRoC were > 0.70. CONCLUSION: The ATRS-NL showed good responsiveness in ATR patients between 3 and 6 months after injury. Use of this questionnaire is recommended in clinical follow-up and longitudinal research of ATR patients. MIC values of 13.5 and 28.5 are recommended to consider ATR patients as improved and greatly improved between 3 and 6 months after ATR. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: II

Indexes of maps of the planets and satellites, 1992

    Get PDF
More than 1,600 maps of the surfaces of planets and satellites of the solar system have been produced by the U.S. geological survey and by the defense mapping agency. This collection of maps is a unique research that has been derived from maps and data returned by a series of remarkably successful space missions. These indexes have been compiled to provide a comprehensive listing of all published maps. Many maps are out of print but copies reside in many libraries and regional planetary imaging facilities. These indexes are a valuable resource for studies of the planets and satellites, and are an important starting point for the acquisition of cartographic data
