In the Middle of Self-Care: A Mid-Level Professional’s Journey to Rebuilding Resilience
In American culture, there seems to be a glorification of “being busy” (Bellezza, Paharia, & Keinan, 2017). Going into my eighth year of working in student affairs and thanks to a new support system and unfortunate health changes, I am now learning the importance of integrating self-care more into my professional and personal life. Through this personal narrative, I hope that my journey with self-care as a mid-level professional helps others begin to start seeking self-care for themselves
Resolution of holograms produced by the fluid experiment system and the holography ground system
The Fluid Experiment System (FES) was developed to study low temperature crystal growth of triglycine sulfate from solution in a low gravity environment onboard Spacelab. The first flight of FES was in 1985. FES uses an optical system to take holograms of the growing crystal to be analyzed after the mission in the Holography Ground System (HGS) located in the Test Laboratory at Marshall Space Flight Center. Microscopic observation of the images formed by the reconstructed holograms is critical to determining crystal growth rate and particle velocity. FES and HGS were designed for a resolution of better than 20 micrometers, but initial observation of the flight holograms show a limit of 80 micrometers. The resolution of the FES holograms is investigated, as well as the role of beam intensity ratio and exposure time on the resolution of HGS produced holograms
Quantitative Schlieren analysis applied to holograms of crystals grown on Spacelab 3
In order to extract additional information about crystals grown in the microgravity environment of Spacelab, a quantitative schlieren analysis technique was developed for use in a Holography Ground System of the Fluid Experiment System. Utilizing the Unidex position controller, it was possible to measure deviation angles produced by refractive index gradients of 0.5 milliradians. Additionally, refractive index gradient maps for any recorded time during the crystal growth were drawn and used to create solute concentration maps for the environment around the crystal. The technique was applied to flight holograms of Cell 204 of the Fluid Experiment System that were recorded during the Spacelab 3 mission on STS 51B. A triglycine sulfate crystal was grown under isothermal conditions in the cell and the data gathered with the quantitative schlieren analysis technique is consistent with a diffusion limited growth process
Supporting safe motherhood : a review of financial trends : summary
An estimated 500,000 women, 99 percent of them from the developing world, die each year from pregnancy-related causes. About three quarters of these deaths are the direct result of obstetrical complications -- hemorrhage, infection, toxemia, obstructed labor, and abortion (under primitive and illegal conditions). An estimated equivalent number of infants do not survive their mother's death. For surviving mothers, the consequences of pregnancy have a severe impact on health and family economics. The strategy for safe motherhood is based on two approaches. First, the encouragement of activities that indirectly improve maternal health. These include education, policies to improve women's rights and working conditions, health care and nutrition, transportation and communication systems, water and sanitation facilities, and increases in family income and food production. The second approach targets activities to reduce maternal deaths. These activities include reducing unwanted pregnancies through the provision of family planning services, and through national policies that recognize the importance of this issue. A second objective is to reduce the risks of pregnancy through providing community-based family planning and prenatal services to identify high-risk cases'adequate referral services for the complications of pregnancy, and communication and transport systems to support patient referral procedures.Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Health Systems Development&Reform,Gender and Health,Early Child and Children's Health,Agricultural Knowledge&Information Systems
Group and intergroup parameters of gang activities: An introduction and research agenda.
In introducing this Special Issue on gangs, we overview the thrust of its papers, demonstrating how they
assist in plugging research gaps from the dearth of psychological attention to gangs. The papers therein
raise important theoretical considerations of group process effects, social identity, and communication
influences in gangs. Also included are empirical examinations of how attitudes to formal organized
crime groups may nurture progang views, how social networks bridge gang divides, the dehumanization
and social dominance association with gang membership, and how membership longevity associates
with gang members’ attitudes to their group. We conclude with theoretical prospects and empirical
vistas for future work. For instance, vitality theory may help explain members’ immersion in gangs,
discursive strategies could explain how youth are enticed into gangs, and examinations of community
and law enforcement attitudes to gangs may provide insight into how oppositional attitudes are
fostered on both sides of the gang divide
Experimental Testing Program in Elementary Chemistry: A Preliminary Report
An experimental testing program is described which utilizes questions that are partly computer composed, in addition to a section composed by the instructor, and a retesting option to the student. Results from a trial of the program for one term indicate that (1) course grades were improved, (2) the student withdrawal failure rate was unaffected, and (3) the employed students took greater advantage of the retest than did the unemployed students
Physics Beyond the Standard Model
I present a brief overview of some exciting possibilities for physics Beyond
the Standard Model. I include short discussions of neutrino physics, the strong
CP problem and axions, GUTs, large and warped extra dimensions, Little Higgs
models and supersymmetry. The chances appear excellent that in the next few
years-- as the LHC era gets underway-- data from a bevy of experiments will

Cozymase. A study of purification methods
Cozymase is one of the essential components of the complex enzyme mixture which effects alcoholic fermentation in the absence of living cells. The separation of the mixture into zymase and cozymase was first accomplished by Harden and Young [1] by means of ultrafiltration through a gelatin-impregnated Chamberland filter candle. The residue and filtrate as thus prepared possessed, separately, no fermentative action, but when mixed were found to produce a rapid fermentation. The active constituent of the residue was named zymase, while that constituent of the filtrate responsible for the reactivation of the residue was named cozymase.
We studied the purification produced in our material by a variety of reagents. In the investigation we have repeated much of the work done by von Euler and Myrbäk [2], and several differences have been found, which appear difficult to explain solely upon the basis of the lower initial purity of our material. As certain of the experiments show distinct promise, we hope to be able to extend the work upon a material of considerably higher original purity, such as was employed by von Euler and Myrbäk
Apparatus for reducing aerodynamic noise in a wind tunnel
An apparatus is described for reducing the background noise produced by the porous walls of the test section of a wind tunnel. A finely meshed screen member is placed over the perforations in the test section walls. The mesh wire screen attached to the interior wall provides a smoother surface for the air stream to flow against reducing the vorticies produced by the edges of the perforations in the test section walls
