The lice of the Tristan da Cunha Archipelago (Insecta: Phthiraptera).
In der Arbeit sind alle bisher in der Literatur erwähnten und fünf neu gesammelte bzw. in Sammlungen nachgewiesene Laus-Arten der Tristan da Cunha Inseln aufgelisted und diskutiert. Die Liste umfasst 54 Laus-Arten aus 21 Gattungen mit ihren Wirten, nämlich 20 Vogel-Arten und einem Säugetier und Angaben zu den vier Hauptinseln. Dabei konnten sechs Funde nur bis zur Art bzw. Unterart bestimmt werden. Rates of species introduction to a remote oceanic island
The introduction of species to areas beyond the limits of their natural distributions has a major homogenizing influence, making previously distinct biotas more similar. The scale of introductions has frequently been commented on, but their rate and spatial pervasiveness have been less well quantified. Here, we report the findings of a detailed study of pterygote insect introductions to Gough Island, one of the most remote and supposedly pristine temperate oceanic islands, and estimate the rate at which introduced species have successfully established.
Out of 99 species recorded from Gough Island, 71 are established introductions, the highest proportion documented for any Southern Ocean island. Estimating a total of approximately 233 landings on Gough Island since first human landfall, this equates to one successful establishment for every three to four landings. Generalizations drawn from other areas suggest that this may be only one-tenth of the number of pterygote species that have arrived at the island, implying that most landings may lead to the arrival of at least one alien. These rates of introduction of new species are estimated to be two to three orders of magnitude greater than background levels for Gough Island, an increase comparable to that estimated for global species extinctions (many of which occur on islands) as a consequence of human activities

Genotyping and antibiotic resistance of thermophilic Campylobacter isolated from chicken and pig meat in Vietnam
Background Campylobacter species are recognized as the most common cause of
foodborne bacterial gastroenteritis in humans. In this study nine
Campylobacter strains isolated from chicken meat and pork in Hanoi, Vietnam,
were characterized using molecular methods and tested for antibiotic
resistance. Results The nine isolates (eight C. jejuni and one C. coli) were
identified by multiplex PCR, and tested for the presence or absence of 29 gene
loci associated with virulence, lipooligosaccharide (LOS) biosynthesis and
further functions. flaA typing, multilocus sequence typing and microarray
assay investigation showed a high degree of genetic diversity among these
isolates. In all isolates motility genes (flaA, flaB, flhA, fliM),
colonization associated genes (cadF, docB), toxin production genes (cdtA,
cdtB, secD, secF), and the LOS biosynthesis gene pglB were detected. Eight
gene loci (fliY, virB11, Cje1278, Cj1434c, Cj1138, Cj1438c, Cj1440c, Cj1136)
could not be detected by PCR. A differing presence of the gene loci ciaB (22.2
%), Cje1280 (77.8 %), docC (66.7 %), and cgtB (55.6 %) was found. iamA, cdtC,
and the type 6 secretion system were present in all C. jejuni isolates but not
in C. coli. flaA typing resulted in five different genotypes within C. jejuni,
MLST classified the isolates into seven sequence types (ST-5155, ST-6736,
ST-2837, ST-4395, ST-5799, ST-4099 and ST-860). The microarray assay analysis
showed a high genetic diversity within Vietnamese Campylobacter isolates which
resulted in eight different types for C. jejuni. Antibiotic susceptibility
profiles showed that all isolates were sensitive to gentamicin and most
isolates (88.8 %) were sensitive to chloramphenicol, erythromycin and
streptomycin. Resistance rates to nalidixic acid, tetracycline and
ciprofloxacin were 88.9, 77.8 and 66.7 %, respectively. Conclusions To the
best of our knowledge, this study is the first report that shows high genetic
diversity and remarkable antibiotic resistance of Campylobacter strains
isolated from meat in Vietnam which can be considered of high public health
significance. These preliminary data show that large scale screenings are
justified to assess the relevance of Campylobacter infections on human health
in Vietnam
Functional Interaction between Type III-Secreted Protein IncA of Chlamydophila psittaci and Human G3BP1
Chlamydophila (Cp.) psittaci, the causative agent of psittacosis in birds and humans, is the most important zoonotic pathogen of the family Chlamydiaceae. These obligate intracellular bacteria are distinguished by a unique biphasic developmental cycle, which includes proliferation in a membrane-bound compartment termed inclusion. All Chlamydiaceae spp. possess a coding capacity for core components of a Type III secretion apparatus, which mediates specific delivery of anti-host effector proteins either into the chlamydial inclusion membrane or into the cytoplasm of target eukaryotic cells. Here we describe the interaction between Type III-secreted protein IncA of Cp. psittaci and host protein G3BP1 in a yeast two-hybrid system. In GST-pull down and co-immunoprecipitation experiments both in vitro and in vivo interaction between full-length IncA and G3BP1 were shown. Using fluorescence microscopy, the localization of G3BP1 near the inclusion membrane of Cp. psittaci-infected Hep-2 cells was demonstrated. Notably, infection of Hep-2 cells with Cp. psittaci and overexpression of IncA in HEK293 cells led to a decrease in c-Myc protein concentration. This effect could be ascribed to the interaction between IncA and G3BP1 since overexpression of an IncA mutant construct disabled to interact with G3BP1 failed to reduce c-Myc concentration. We hypothesize that lowering the host cell c-Myc protein concentration may be part of a strategy employed by Cp. psittaci to avoid apoptosis and scale down host cell proliferation
