    Semi-Lagrangian methods for parabolic problems in divergence form

    Semi-Lagrangian methods have traditionally been developed in the framework of hyperbolic equations, but several extensions of the Semi-Lagrangian approach to diffusion and advection--diffusion problems have been proposed recently. These extensions are mostly based on probabilistic arguments and share the common feature of treating second-order operators in trace form, which makes them unsuitable for mass conservative models like the classical formulations of turbulent diffusion employed in computational fluid dynamics. We propose here some basic ideas for treating second-order operators in divergence form. A general framework for constructing consistent schemes in one space dimension is presented, and a specific case of nonconservative discretization is discussed in detail and analysed. Finally, an extension to (possibly nonlinear) problems in an arbitrary number of dimensions is proposed. Although the resulting discretization approach is only of first order in time, numerical results in a number of test cases highlight the advantages of these methods for applications to computational fluid dynamics and their superiority over to more standard low order time discretization approaches

    Commonality in the LME aluminium and copper volatility processes through a Figarch lens

    We consider dynamic representation of spot and three month aluminium and copper volatilities. These are the two most important metals traded in the London Metal Exchange (LME). They share common business cycle factors and are traded under identical contract specifications. We apply the bivariate FIGARCH model which allows parsimonious representation of long memory volatility processes. Our results show that spot and three month aluminium and copper volatilities follow long memory processes, that they exhibit a common degree of fractional integration and that the processes are symmetric. However, there is no evidence that the processes are fractionally cointegrated. This high degree of commonality may result from the common LME trading process

    The Non-Abelian Self Dual String on the Light Cone

    We construct the scalar profile for the non-abelian self dual string connecting two M5-branes compactified on a light-like circle. The construction is based on a conjectured modified version of Nahm's equations describing a D2-brane, with a magnetic field on it, suspended between two D4-branes. Turning on a constant magnetic field on the D2-brane corresponds to a boost in the eleventh direction. In the limit of infinite boost the D4-branes correspond to light-like compactified M5-branes. The solution for the scalar profile of the brane remains finite in this limit and displays all the correct expected features such as smooth interpolation between the unbroken and broken phase with the correct value for the Higgs field at infinity.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX 2e, 2 figure

    We examine the impact of the pricing regime on price variability with reference to the non-ferrous metals industry. Theoretical arguments are ambiguous, but in any case suggests that the extent of monopoly power is more important than the pricing regime as determinant of variability. Slade (1991) argued that metals price volatility increased in the nineteen eighties relative to the seventies, and that this was associated with a move from administered producer pricing to exchange pricing. This claims are only partially supported.     A survey of cherry leaf roll virus in intensively managed grafted english (Persian) walnut trees in Italy

    Blackline disease, caused by Cherry leaf roll virus (CLRV), is considered a serious threat limiting English walnut (Juglans regia) production in Italy and the EU if walnut species other than J. regia e.g. \u2018Paradox\u2019 hybrid (J. regia 7 J. hindsii), French hybrid (J. regia 7 J. major or J. regia 7 J. nigra) or northern California black walnut (J. hindsii) are used as the rootstock. The virus transmissibility by pollen as well as latent infections can result in the spread of CLRVcontaminated propagative material, which is a major means of the virus dispersal by human activities. In 2014 and 2015 to ascertain the presence and the distribution of blackline symptoms in commercial orchards and to provide a description of the symptomatology, visual inspections and double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA) analyses were carried out on 1,684 walnut trees in four different intensively managed grafted English walnut orchards in northeast Italy (Veneto Region). Trees with clear blackline symptoms at the scion-rootstock junction, often associated with general decline of the plant, were found only in one commercial orchard in northeast Italy on trees older than ten years of cvs. \u2018Tulare\u2019 and \u2018Chandler\u2019, grafted onto \u2018Paradox\u2019 rootstock. To our knowledge this is the first report of CLRV (blackline) decline and death in a commercial walnut orchard in Italy

    A Novel Ultrasound-based Measure of the Liver among Diabetes Mellitus Type II Patients

    Diabetes mellitus type II (DM II) or adult onset diabetes is due to the inefficient use of insulin, which affects various organs and tissues. Patients with DM II are at risk of suffering non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) that can later develop into more life threating forms such as hepatomegaly, cirrhosis or liver cancer. Following the logic of the non-inferiority trial test, we aim to establish a more accurate anatomical measure of the right liver lobe (RLL) to facilitate close monitoring of liver size with ultrasound (US). We hypothesize that US is not unacceptably worse than computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to accurately and reliably measure the size of the RLL when the measure is taken in the midaxillary line and craniocaudal plane (MAL-CC). Therefore, the objective of this study is to conduct a non-inferiority trial to test our novel MAL-CC measure. To meet this aim, US measure of the RLL was taken from DM II (n=7) and non-DM II (n=5) patients, whom were recruited from 2 endocrinology clinics at SoM-UPR. Preliminary data shows that MAL-CC measure of the RLL from non-DM II patients is 13.99 + 2.53 cm whereas the same measurement among DM II patients is 15.25 + 3.25 cm (Mann-Whitney U test, p= 0.42). It is concluded that there is a non-significant trend for large RLL sizes among DM II patients. Future work aims to increase sample size and to validate our novel measurement with MRI

    Regularization and Quantization of Higher Dimensional Current Algebras

    We present some recently discovered infinite dimensional Lie algebras that can be understood as extensions of the algebra Map(M,g) of maps from a compact p-dimensional manifold to some finite dimensional Lie algebra g. In the first part of the paper, we describe the physical motivations for the study of these algebras.     The effects of cannabidiol isolate on menstrual-related symptoms

    The current study aimed to examine the potential effects of CBD isolate for alleviating menstrual-related symptoms (MRS). Participants (N = 33, MAGE = 20.50, MBMI = 23.02)were assigned randomly to two open-label dosing groups (160mg, n = 17; 320mg, n = 16) and completed monthly surveys for four months that included MRS-related measures. We examined differences in MRS and related outcomes between baseline and three months of CBD administration. Results revealed reductions in MRS, irritability, anxiety, global impression, stress, and subjective severity scores with a small effect when comparing baseline to all three months of CBD administration. Findings suggest that CBD may have potential for treating MRS. Further research is warranted examining the potential to optimize CBD administration for reducing MRS (i.e., terpenes, routes of administration, time of administration)
