Some Exact Results for Spanning Trees on Lattices
For -vertex, -dimensional lattices with , the number
of spanning trees grows asymptotically as
in the thermodynamic limit. We present an exact closed-form result for the
asymptotic growth constant for spanning trees on the
-dimensional body-centered cubic lattice. We also give an exact integral

The Evolving Activity of the Dynamically Young Comet C/2009 P1 (Garradd)
We used the UltraViolet-Optical Telescope on board Swift to observe the
dynamically young comet C/2009 P1 (Garradd) from a heliocentric distance of 3.5
AU pre-perihelion until 4.0 AU outbound. At 3.5 AU pre-perihelion, comet
Garradd had one of the highest dust-to-gas ratios ever observed, matched only
by comet Hale-Bopp. The evolving morphology of the dust in its coma suggests an
outburst that ended around 2.2 AU pre-perihelion. Comparing slit-based
measurements and observations acquired with larger fields of view indicated
that between 3 AU and 2 AU pre-perihelion a significant extended source started
producing water in the coma. We demonstrate that this source, which could be
due to icy grains, disappeared quickly around perihelion. Water production by
the nucleus may be attributed to a constantly active source of at least 75
km, estimated to be more than 20 percent of the surface. Based on our
measurements, the comet lost kg of ice and dust during this
apparition, corresponding to at most a few meters of its surface.Even though
this was likely not Garradd's first passage through the inner solar system, the
activity of the comet was complex and changed significantly during the time it
was observed
The solar maximum satellite capture cell: Impact features and orbital debris and micrometeoritic projectile materials
The physical properties of impact features observed in the Solar Max main electronics box (MEB) thermal blanket generally suggest an origin by hypervelocity impact. The chemistry of micrometeorite material suggests that a wide variety of projectile materials have survived impact with retention of varying degrees of pristinity. Impact features that contain only spacecraft paint particles are on average smaller than impact features caused by micrometeorite impacts. In case both types of materials co-occur, it is belevied that the impact feature, generally a penetration hole, was caused by a micrometeorite projectile. The typically smaller paint particles were able to penetrate though the hole in the first layer and deposit in the spray pattern on the second layer. It is suggested that paint particles have arrived with a wide range of velocities relative to the Solar Max satellite. Orbiting paint particles are an important fraction of materials in the near-Earth environment. In general, the data from the Solar Max studies are a good calibration for the design of capture cells to be flown in space and on board Space Station. The data also suggest that development of multiple layer capture cells in which the projectile may retain a large degree of pristinity is a feasible goal
Spectra of sparse non-Hermitian random matrices: an analytical solution
We present the exact analytical expression for the spectrum of a sparse
non-Hermitian random matrix ensemble, generalizing two classical results in
random-matrix theory: this analytical expression forms a non-Hermitian version
of the Kesten-Mckay law as well as a sparse realization of Girko's elliptic
law. Our exact result opens new perspectives in the study of several physical
problems modelled on sparse random graphs. In this context, we show
analytically that the convergence rate of a transport process on a very sparse

A time-lagged investigation of the impact of coworker behavior on the effects of demographic dissimilarity

Although it is clear that coworker absenteeism, tardiness, and turnover can influence an employee\u27s actions, scholars have yet to consider the impact of relational demography on the adoption of these behavioral norms. Inspired by social identity, situational strength, and attraction-selection-attrition theories, we proposed that individuals who differ from their coworkers in age, sex, or racioethnicity would feel threatened by their outnumbered status and subsequently motivated to be absent, tardy, or more likely to turnover. However, we expected coworker withdrawal behavior to moderate whether or not dissimilar personnel act on these desires. Results from hierarchical multilevel modeling analyses of data from 470 U.S. call center workers nested in 51 work groups revealed that racioethnic dissimilarity was positively related to time-lagged changes in absenteeism and tardiness as well as heightened turnover likelihood. These effects emerged only among employees whose coworkers engaged in greater withdrawal behavior. Importantly, racioethnically dissimilar employees working in more permissive climates (i.e., those with high levels of coworker absenteeism, tardiness, or turnover) exhibited the greatest increases in absenteeism and tardiness over three months and had the highest supervisor-rated turnover likelihood. Implications for diversity management are discussed
Discovery of a Young Radio Pulsar in a Relativistic Binary Orbit
We report on the discovery of PSR J1141-6545, a radio pulsar in an eccentric,
relativistic 5-hr binary orbit. The pulsar shows no evidence for being
recycled, having pulse period P = 394 ms, characteristic age tau_c = 1.4 x 10^6
yr, and inferred surface magnetic dipole field strength B = 1.3 x 10^12 G. From
the mass function and measured rate of periastron advance, we determine the
total mass in the system to be (2.300 +/- 0.012) solar masses, assuming that
the periastron advance is purely relativistic. Under the same assumption, we
constrain the pulsar's mass to be M_p < 1.348 solar masses and the companion's
mass to be M_c > 0.968 solar masses (both 99% confidence). Given the total
system mass and the distribution of measured neutron star masses, the companion
is probably a massive white dwarf which formed prior to the birth of the

Investigation of common, low-frequency and rare genome-wide variation in anorexia nervosa
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder presenting with dangerously low body weight, and a deep and persistent fear of gaining weight. To date, only one genome-wide significant locus associated with AN has been identified. We performed an exome-chip based genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in 2158 cases from nine populations of European origin and 15 485 ancestrally matched controls. Unlike previous studies, this GWAS also probed association in low-frequency and rare variants. Sixteen independent variants were taken forward for in silico and de novo replication (11 common and 5 rare). No findings reached genome-wide significance. Two notable common variants were identified: rs10791286, an intronic variant in OPCML (P=9.89 × 10−6), and rs7700147, an intergenic variant (P=2.93 × 10−5). No low-frequency variant associations were identified at genome-wide significance, although the study was well-powered to detect low-frequency variants with large effect sizes, suggesting that there may be no AN loci in this genomic search space with large effect sizes
Behavioral Effects of Tyrosine During Sustained Wakefulness
The fatigue and cognitive performance deficits associated with sleep loss and stress, like that experienced during sustained flight operations and nighttime flying, have motivated the search for effective nonpharmacological countermeasures. The behavioral effects of the potential countermeasure tyrosine, an amino-acid precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine, were examined during an episode of continuous nighttime work involving one night\u27s sleep loss. Volunteers performed nine iterations of a battery of cognitive and subjective tasks for approximately 13 h, beginning at 1930 and ending at 0820 the following morning. Subjects remained awake throughout the day on which the experiment began and were awake for approximately 24 h by the end of testing. Six hours after the start of the experiment, one-half of the subjects received 150 mg/kg tyrosine in a split dose while the other half received a cornstarch placebo in a double-blind procedure. The tracking-task performance of tyrosine subjects declined less during the night than that of placebo subjects. Tyrosine administration was also associated with nonsignificant trends toward reducing (a) lapses on a high-event-rate vigilance task, (b) subjective sleepiness, and (c) the intensities of several fatigue-related symptoms
Are chest compressions safe for the patient reconstructed with sternal plates? Evaluating the safety of cardiopulmonary resuscitation using a human cadaveric model
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Plate and screw fixation is a recent addition to the sternal wound treatment armamentarium. Patients undergoing cardiac and major vascular surgery have a higher risk of postoperative arrest than other elective patients. Those who undergo sternotomy for either cardiac or major vascular procedures are at a higher risk of postoperative arrest. Sternal plate design allows quick access to the mediastinum facilitating open cardiac massage, but chest compressions are the mainstay of re-establishing cardiac output in the event of arrest. The response of sternal plates and the chest wall to compressions when plated has not been studied. The safety of performing this maneuver is unknown. This study intends to demonstrate compressions are safe after sternal plating.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We investigated the effect of chest compressions on the plated sternum using a human cadaveric model. Cadavers were plated, an arrest was simulated, and an experienced physician performed a simulated resuscitation. Intrathoracic pressure was monitored throughout to ensure the plates encountered an appropriate degree of force. The hardware and viscera were evaluated for failure and trauma respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No hardware failure or obvious visceral trauma was observed. Rib fractures beyond the boundaries of the plates were noted but the incidence was comparable to control and to the fracture incidence after resuscitation previously cited in the literature.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>From this work we believe chest compressions are safe for the patient with sternal plates when proper plating technique is used. We advocate the use of this life-saving maneuver as part of an ACLS resuscitation in the event of an arrest for rapidly re-establishing circulation.</p
