How many of the scaling trends in collisions will be violated at sqrt{s_NN} = 14 TeV ? - Predictions from Monte Carlo quark-gluon string model
Multiplicity, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of hadrons
produced both in inelastic and nondiffractive collisions at energies from
\,GeV to 14\,TeV are studied within the Monte Carlo quark-gluon
string model (QGSM). Good agreement with the available experimental data up to
\,TeV is obtained, and predictions are made for the collisions
at top LHC energy \,TeV. The model indicates that Feynman
scaling and extended longitudinal scaling remain valid in the fragmentation
regions, whereas strong violation of Feynman scaling is observed at
midrapidity. The Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling in multiplicity
distributions is violated at LHC also. The origin of both maintenance and
violation of the scaling trends is traced to short range correlations of
particles in the strings and interplay between the multistring processes at
ultrarelativistic energies
Highest coefficient of scalar products in SU(3)-invariant integrable models
We study SU(3)-invariant integrable models solvable by nested algebraic Bethe
ansatz. Scalar products of Bethe vectors in such models can be expressed in
terms of a bilinear combination of their highest coefficients. We obtain
various different representations for the highest coefficient in terms of sums
over partitions. We also obtain multiple integral representations for the
highest coefficient.Comment: 17 page
Numerical solution and spectrum of boundary-domain integral equation for the Neumann BVP with variable coefficient
This is the post-print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 Taylor & Francis. In this paper, a numerical implementation of a direct united boundary-domain integral equation (BDIE) related to the Neumann boundary value problem for a scalar elliptic partial differential equation with a variable coefficient is discussed. The BDIE is reduced to a uniquely solvable one by adding an appropriate perturbation operator. The mesh-based discretization of the BDIEs with quadrilateral domain elements leads to a system of linear algebraic equations (discretized BDIE). Then, the system is solved by LU decomposition and Neumann iterations. Convergence of the iterative method is discussed in relation to the distribution of eigenvalues of the corresponding discrete operators calculated numerically. The work was supported by the grant EP/H020497/1 "Mathematical analysis of localised boundary-domain integral equations for BVPs with variable coefficients" of the EPSRC, UK
Pinhole calculations of the Josephson effect in 3He-B
We study theoretically the dc Josephson effect between two volumes of
superfluid 3He-B. We first discuss how the calculation of the current-phase
relationships is divided into a mesoscopic and a macroscopic problem. We then
analyze mass and spin currents and the symmetry of weak links. In quantitative
calculations the weak link is assumed to be a pinhole, whose size is small in
comparison to the coherence length. We derive a quasiclassical expression for
the coupling energy of a pinhole, allowing also for scattering in the hole.
Using a selfconsistent order parameter near a wall, we calculate the
current-phase relationships in several cases. In the isotextural case, the
current-phase relations are plotted assuming a constant spin-orbit texture. In
the opposite anisotextural case the texture changes as a function of the phase
difference. For that we have to consider the stiffness of the macroscopic
texture, and we also calculate some surface interaction parameters. We analyze
the experiments by Marchenkov et al. We find that the observed pi states and
bistability hardly can be explained with the isotextural pinhole model, but a
good quantitative agreement is achieved with the anisotextural model.Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, revtex
Temperature dependence of antiferromagnetic susceptibility in ferritin
We show that antiferromagnetic susceptibility in ferritin increases with
temperature between 4.2 K and 180 K (i. e. below the N\'{e}el temperature) when
taken as the derivative of the magnetization at high fields (
Oe). This behavior contrasts with the decrease in temperature previously found,
where the susceptibility was determined at lower fields ( Oe). At
high fields (up to Oe) the temperature dependence of the
antiferromagnetic susceptibility in ferritin nanoparticles approaches the
normal behavior of bulk antiferromagnets and nanoparticles considering
superantiferromagnetism, this latter leading to a better agreement at high
field and low temperature. The contrast with the previous results is due to the
insufficient field range used ( Oe), not enough to saturate the
ferritin uncompensated moment.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev.
Prevention of renal injury after induction of ozone tolerance in rats submitted to warm ischaemia.
On the basis that ozone (O3) can upregulate cellular antioxidant enzymes, a morphological, biochemical and functional renal study was performed in rats undergoing a prolonged treatment with O3 before renal ischaemia. Rats were divided into four groups: (1) control, a medial abdominal incision was performed to expose the kidneys; (2) ischaemia, in animals undergoing a bilateral renal ischaemia (30 min), with subsequent reperfusion (3 h); (3) O3 + ischaemia, as group 2, but with previous treatment with O3 (0.5 mg/kg per day given in 2.5 ml O2) via rectal administration for 15 treatments; (4) O2 + ischaemia, as group 3, but using oxygen (O2) alone. Biochemical parameters as fructosamine level, phospholipase A, and superoxide dismutases (SOD) activities, as well as renal plasma flow (RPF) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR), were measured by means of plasma clearance of p-amino-hippurate and inulin, respectively. In comparison with groups 1 and 3, the RPF and GFR were significantly decreased in groups 2 and 4. Interestingly, renal homogenates of the latter groups yielded significantly higher values of phospholipase A activity and fructosamine level in comparison with either the control (1) and the O3 (3) treated groups. Moreover renal SOD activity showed a significant increase in group 3 without significant differences among groups 1, 2 and 4. Morphological alterations of the kidney were present in 100%, 88% and 30% of the animals in groups 2, 4 and 3, respectively. It is proposed that the O3 protective effect can be ascribed to the substantial possibility of upregulating the antioxidant defence system capable of counteracting the damaging effect of ischaemia. These findings suggest that, whenever possible, ozone preconditioning may represent a prophylactic approach for minimizing renal damage before transplantation
