The works of such men as Martin Delany, Frederick Douglass, W. E.B. Dubois, and Marcus Garvey, stand alone for their brilliance, but brought together, they provide a panoramic view of the diversity of African-American philosophies for Black advancement
Linking eye design with host symbiont relationships in pontoniine shrimps (crustacea, decapoda, palaemonidae)
Symbiosis is prevalent in the marine environment with many studies examining the effects of such interactions between host and symbiont. Pontoniine shrimps are a group whose ecology is characterised by symbiotic interactions. This investigation examines the gross morphology of Pontoniinae compound eyes and superficial optical parameters with reference to their symbiotic relationship or lifestyle category; free-living, ectosymbiont, endosymbiont (bivalves) or endosymbiont (non-bivalves). The eye morphologies of free-living and ectosymbiotic species are very similar, yet differ from both forms of endosymbiotic species. Endosymbionts have significantly smaller and simpler eyes with larger facets and bigger interommatidial angles and eye parameters for increased sensitivity levels. However bivalve endosymbionts form an intermediary group between non-bivalve endosymbionts and ectosymbionts as a result of their more active lifestyle. The accessory eye or "nebenauge", although of uncertain function, commonly occurs in free-living Pontoniinae species but rarely in endosymbionts apart from in more primitive species. The variation in morphology reflects tensions between functional requirements and ecological pressures that have strongly influenced eye design in Pontoniinae. © 2014 Dobson et al
Preservice Teachers’ Identity-Agency With Progressive Writing Pedagogies
This study explores the relationship between preservice teachers’ perceptions of their professional identities and their progressive primary school writing practices as part of a University-school partnership project. We analyse preservice teachers’ identities using discourse analysis and find a tension between self-perceptions as progressive teachers and the difficulties they experience enacting progressive pedagogies. For the majority, these difficulties are overcome through reflective theorising, but in utilising process drama, their otherwise expansive identity-agency is restricted by their wider apprehension of neoliberalism. We conclude by underlining the importance of specialised and concurrent models of teacher preparation which align preservice teachers’ identities and practice
Perioperative nurse practitioners (NP) - The first two perioperative NPs are authorised in NSW
This paper explores the development and subsequent authorisation of the first two perioperative nurse practitioners in NSW. It locates their experiences within the wider debate concerning the evolution of advanced nursing practice and roles, both in Australia and globally. However, the focus is on the role of nurse practitioners (NPs). The need for a collaborative, systematic and evidence-based process to develop perioperative NPs (like others), the lack of clarity about the terminology associated with advanced perioperative nursing practice, and the role confusion evident in the literature, was mirrored in the experiences of the two Sydney-based perioperative NPs. Their still-evolving role, associated activities and future directions are described here in detail. The external factors which contributed to NP role development are also addressed. What is known about the topic Advanced nursing roles, including those in perioperative settings, have been evident for many decades outside Australia. The development of NPs, particularly in Australia and New Zealand, is much more recent. What this article contributes It describes the development, role and activities of the first authorised perioperative NPs in NSW. External morphology of eyes and Nebenaugen of caridean decapods–ecological and systematic considerations
Most caridean decapods have compound eyes of the reflecting superposition kind, and additionally some possess an accessory eye-like organ of unknown function, also referred to as the nebenauge.We examined 308 caridean genera to assess the general morphology of the eye, rostrum length, eye diameter and the presence or absence and, when present, the diameter of the nebenauge.We have attempted to relate these data to ecological and taxonomic considerations.We consider there to be 6 distinct eye types based on the margin between the eyestalk and cornea. The presence of nebenaugen appears to be generally linked to an active lifestyle, as evidenced by the fact that species that have nebenaugen tend to have larger eyes and are more likely to have a distinct rostrum.We suggest that the inconsistencies in its presence/absence under both systematic and ecological lenses may indicate that when present it has various roles relating to behavioural and physiological rhythms
Thermal expansion and crystal structure of cementite, Fe3C, between 4 and 600K determined by time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction
The cementite phase of Fe3C has been studied by high-resolution neutron powder diffraction at 4.2 K and at 20 K intervals between 20 and 600 K. The crystal structure remains orthorhombic (Pnma) throughout, with the fractional coordinates of all atoms varying only slightly (the magnetic structure of the ferromagnetic phase could not be determined). The ferromagnetic phase transition, with Tc 480 K, greatly affects the thermal expansion coefficient of the material. The average volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion above Tc was found to be 4.1 (1) × 10-5 K-1; below Tc it is considerably lower (< 1.8 × 10-5 K-1) and varies greatly with temperature. The behaviour of the volume over the full temperature range of the experiment may be modelled by a third-order Grüneisen approximation to the zero-pressure equation of state, combined with a magnetostrictive correction based on mean-field theory
Collisionless hydrodynamics for 1D motion of inhomogeneous degenerate electron gases: equivalence of two recent descriptions
Recently I. Tokatly and O. Pankratov (''TP'', Phys. Rev. B 60, 15550 (1999))
used velocity moments of a semiclassical kinetic equation to derive a
hydrodynamic description of electron motion in a degenerate electron gas.
Independently, the present authors (Theochem 501-502, 327 (2000)) used
considerations arising from the Harmonic Potential Theorem (Phys. Rev. Lett.
73, 2244 (1994)) to generate a new form of high-frequency hydrodynamics for
inhomogeneous degenerate electron gases (HPT-N3 hydrodynamics). We show here
that TP hydrodynamics yields HPT-N3 hydrodynamics when linearized about a
Thomas-Fermi groundstate with one-dimensional spatial inhomnogeneity.Comment: 17p
Asymptotically exact dispersion relations for collective modes in a confined charged Fermi liquid
Using general local conservations laws we derive dispersion relations for
edge modes in a slab of electron liquid confined by a symmetric potential. The
dispersion relations are exact up to , where is a wave
vector and is an effective screening length. For a harmonic external
potential the dispersion relations are expressed in terms of the {\em exact}
static pressure and dynamic shear modulus of a homogeneous liquid with the
density taken at the slab core. We also derive a simple expression for the
frequency shift of the dipole (Kohn) modes in nearly parabolic quantum dots in

The human transmembrane proteome
Background: Transmembrane proteins have important roles in cells, as they are involved in energy production, signal transduction, cell-cell interaction, cell-cell communication and more. In human cells, they are frequently targets for pharmaceuticals; therefore, knowledge about their properties and structure is crucial. Topology of transmembrane proteins provide a low resolution structural information, which can be a starting point for either laboratory experiments or modelling their 3D structures. Results: Here, we present a database of the human α-helical transmembrane proteome, including the predicted and/or experimentally established topology of each transmembrane protein, together with the reliability of the prediction. In order to distinguish transmembrane proteins in the proteome as well as for topology prediction, we used a newly developed consensus method (CCTOP) that incorporates recent state of the art methods, with tested accuracies on a novel human benchmark protein set. CCTOP utilizes all available structure and topology data as well as bioinformatical evidences for topology prediction in a probabilistic framework provided by the hidden Markov model. This method shows the highest accuracy (98.5 % for discrinimating between transmembrane and non-transmembrane proteins and 84 % for per protein topology prediction) among the dozen tested topology prediction methods. Analysis of the human proteome with the CCTOP indicates that it contains 4998 (26 %) transmembrane proteins. Besides predicting topology, reliability of the predictions is estimated as well, and it is demonstrated that the per protein prediction accuracies of more than 60 % of the predictions are over 98 % on the benchmark sets and most probably on the predicted human transmembrane proteome too. Conclusions: Here, we present the most accurate prediction of the human transmembrane proteome together with the experimental topology data. These data, as well as various statistics about the human transmembrane proteins and their topologies can be downloaded from and can be visualized at the website of the human transmembrane proteome (http://htp.enzim.hu).
