    This paper presents the life story of a single small-business owner of immigrant background who wants his companyto grow. His business strategies are analysed both as a part of his own biographical work, and as they wereinfluenced and framed by broader political, economic and social processes. It is shown how his own personalqualities in combination with opportunity structures in the local market provided favourable conditions for hisbreak-in. Breaking out, however, seems to be presented with different types of barriers, such as lack of access tocapital, discrimination, and the fact that new markets may consist of different sorts of network that are in its turnmore difficult for new actors to enter. But even if newcomers often find these barriers difficult for to overcome,individuals are not just passive objects but also have the opportunity to realize their lives according to their own lifeplans

    For independent XX and YY in the inequality P(X≤Y+μ)P(X\leq Y+\mu), we give sharp lower bounds for unimodal distributions having finite variance, and sharp upper bounds assuming symmetric densities bounded by a finite constant. The lower bounds depend on a result of Dubins about extreme points and the upper bounds depend on a symmetric rearrangement theorem of F. Riesz.     Identifying areas of neotectonic activity using radar remote sensing in the northern foothills of the Alaska Range

University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2013The tectonically active northern foothills of the Alaska Range display obvious uplift and deformation, making the area an attractive place to conduct research. Research has been done in this area of Alaska in the recent past, most of which required intensive fieldwork. This study analyzes if modern radar remote sensing technology is useful in identifying neotectonic activity and in determining where future work should be conducted. Radar remote sensing data is used in two ways to support the identification of tectonically active areas: First, I incorporated available geologic maps with polarimetric and interferometric radar remote sensing data to create a classification scheme to identify and map the preserved depositional surface of the Nenana Gravel. This surface, successfully mapped and overlain on a newly available high-resolution DEM, highlighted the topographic expression of deformation in the area. Second, the high-resolution DEMs were used to create and analyze longitudinal river profiles, and a Stream Length-gradient Index Map, both of which correlate well with known active structures. This study indicates that radar remote sensing can be used to identify tectonically active areas before employing extensive fieldwork and used in combination with traditional geological procedures enhances the amount and quality of the derived information

    Subsyndromal Delirium And Postoperative Pain In Older Adults

    Study Purpose and Design: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between subsyndromal delirium and pain in older adults following major elective orthopedic surgery. The design of this correlational study was based on Inouye and Charpentier\u27s (1996) multifactorial model of delirium. Methods: Delirium assessments of 62 older adults were completed at 24, 48, and 72 hours following major elective orthopedic surgery. Study measures included: a) the Iowa Pain Thermometer (0-10) pain intensity scale; and b) the Confusion Assessment Method (short form). Data were analyzed for relationships among delirium symptoms and pain, and secondarily, 24-hour opioid intake controlling for preoperative risk factors. Findings: Subsyndromal delirium occurred in 67.9 percent of participants in this study. Increased pain from 0 to 24 hours after surgery had a significant (p\u3c.05) relationship with subsyndromal delirium on the second postoperative day. Similarly, increased pain from 24 to 48 hours had a significant (p\u3c.05) relationship with delirium symptoms on the second postoperative day. Opioid intake was not significantly related to subsyndromal delirium. Conclusions and Implications for Clinical Practice: Findings from this study suggest older adults with higher levels of pain are at higher risk for developing delirium symptoms and subsyndromal delirium on the second day following major elective orthopedic surgery. Improved pain management may help reduce subsyndromal delirium when attention is given to pain on the second postoperative day
