Atomic and molecular spectra emitted by normal liquid ⁴He excited by corona discharge

    No full text
The liquid ⁴He at fixed temperature 4.2 K and different pressures up to 8 MPa was excited by corona discharge of both negative and positive polarity. Emission of He I atomic lines and He₂ molecular bands are observed. In negative corona the lines spectra show a distinct blue-shift and line-broadening, which becomes stronger with the pressure increasing. The rotational structure of molecular bands is resolved at pressures (0.1–0.2) MPa. The blue shift of the Q-branch maximum at different pressures was observed. Rotational temperature of 900 K has been estimated for the d³Σ⁺u-b³Πg molecular band. A positive corona was realized on a point anode for fewer radii of the electrode and larger voltage than in the negative corona. Electric currents in both negative and positive corona differ weakly. Spectral analysis of the radiation from the positive corona shows qualitative differences of spectral features of these discharges. The spectra observed in the positive corona have marked nonsymmetric shape. The asymmetric atomic and molecular spectra show an increased intensity of their long-length (red) wings

Accurate quantification of WM lesion load is essential for the care of patients with multiple sclerosis. We tested whether the combination of accelerated 3D-FLAIR and denoising using deep learning-based reconstruction could provide a relevant strategy while shortening the imaging examination. Twenty-eight patients with multiple sclerosis were prospectively examined using 4 implementations of 3D-FLAIR with decreasing scan times (4 minutes 54 seconds, 2 minutes 35 seconds, 1 minute 40 seconds, and 1 minute 15 seconds). Each FLAIR sequence was reconstructed without and with denoising using deep learning-based reconstruction, resulting in 8 FLAIR sequences per patient. Image quality was assessed with the Likert scale, apparent SNR, and contrast-to-noise ratio. Manual and automatic lesion segmentations, performed randomly and blindly, were quantitatively evaluated against ground truth using the absolute volume difference, true-positive rate, positive predictive value, Dice similarity coefficient, Hausdorff distance, and F1 score based on the lesion count. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and 2-way ANOVA were performed. Both image-quality evaluation and the various metrics showed deterioration when the FLAIR scan time was accelerated. However, denoising using deep learning-based reconstruction significantly improved subjective image quality and quantitative performance metrics, particularly for manual segmentation. Overall, denoising using deep learning-based reconstruction helped to recover contours closer to those from the criterion standard and to capture individual lesions otherwise overlooked. The Dice similarity coefficient was equivalent between the 2-minutes-35-seconds-long FLAIR with denoising using deep learning-based reconstruction and the 4-minutes-54-seconds-long reference FLAIR sequence. Denoising using deep learning-based reconstruction helps to recognize multiple sclerosis lesions buried in the noise of accelerated FLAIR acquisitions, a possibly useful strategy to efficiently shorten the scan time in clinical practice.Translational Research and Advanced Imaging Laborator

Germline MC1R status influences somatic mutation burden in melanoma

The major genetic determinants of cutaneous melanoma risk in the general population are disruptive variants (R alleles) in the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) gene. These alleles are also linked to red hair, freckling, and sun sensitivity, all of which are known melanoma phenotypic risk factors. Here we report that in melanomas and for somatic C>T mutations, a signature linked to sun exposure, the expected single-nucleotide variant count associated with the presence of an R allele is estimated to be 42% (95% CI, 15-76%) higher than that among persons without an R allele. This figure is comparable to the expected mutational burden associated with an additional 21 years of age. We also find significant and similar enrichment of non-C>T mutation classes supporting a role for additional mutagenic processes in melanoma development in individuals carrying R alleles

Cultural Validation of the “Use of Intuition by Nursing Students Scale - Turkish version”

PubMed ID: 22865202Purpose: It is well known that intuition ability directly affects patient care quality and outcomes in nursing practice and is therefore an important aspect of nursing education. This study tests the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Scale of Use of Intuition by Nursing Students. Design and Methods: The sample for this methodological study was composed of 250 nursing students. Each item of the scale was translated into Turkish by the researchers and validated for Turkish use. Results: The item–total correlation was between.30 and.56 and its Cronbach ? coefficient was.86. There was a statistically significant positive relationship between the level of clinical experience and the total points scored on the physical awareness, emotional awareness, and physical sensations subscales and from the total scale. Conclusions: Based on these results, the Turkish version of the Scale of Use of Intuition by Nursing Students is valid and reliable. © 2012, SAGE Publications. All rights reserved

Spectroscopic investigations of corona discharge in high pressure helium at 300 K

    No full text
Gaseous Helium at 300 K and pressure (0.1–3) MPa was excited using a corona discharge both for negative and positive high voltages. The light emitted from the ionization zone of the discharge was analyzed. Asymmetric shape of atomic lines 706 nm and 728 nm was recorded. Blue wings of the lines are more intensive than their red wings. The line shape is described as a convolution of Lorentz profile of the line center and a quasi-statistical profile of a blue wing of the line. Such analysis predicts no heating of the gas in the ionization zone for positive corona and considerable heating for negative corona
