Landau-Zener Tunnelling in Waveguide Arrays
Landau-Zener tunnelling is discussed in connection with optical waveguide
arrays. Light injected in a specific band of the Bloch spectrum in the
propagation constant can be transmitted to another band, changing its physical
properties. This is achieved using two waveguide arrays with different
refractive indices, which amounts to consider a Schr\"odinger equation in a
periodic potential with a step. The step causes wave "acceleration" and thus
induces Landau-Zener tunnelling. The region of physical parameters where this
phenomenon can occur is analytically determined and a realistic experimental
setup is suggested. Its application could allow the realization of light
filters.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
PT-Symmetric Talbot Effects
We show that complex PT-symmetric photonic lattices can lead to a new class
of self-imaging Talbot effects. For this to occur, we find that the input field
pattern, has to respect specific periodicities which are dictated by the
symmetries of the system. While at the spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking point,
the image revivals occur at Talbot lengths governed by the characteristics of
the passive lattice, at the exact phase it depends on the gain and loss
parameter thus allowing one to control the imaging process.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Stable spatiotemporal solitons in Bessel optical lattices
We investigate the existence and stability of three-dimensional (3D) solitons
supported by cylindrical Bessel lattices (BLs) in self-focusing media. If the
lattice strength exceeds a threshold value, we show numerically, and using the
variational approximation, that the solitons are stable within one or two
intervals of values of their norm. In the latter case, the Hamiltonian-vs.-norm
diagram has a "swallowtail" shape, with three cuspidal points. The model
applies to Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and to optical media with saturable
nonlinearity, suggesting new ways of making stable 3D BEC solitons and "light
bullets" of an arbitrary size.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, Phys. Rev. Lett., in pres
Creation of discrete solitons and observation of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier in Bose-Einstein Condensates
We analyze the generation and mobility of discrete solitons in Bose-Einstein
condensates confined in an optical lattice under realistic experimental
conditions. We discuss first the creation of 1D discrete solitons, for both
attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions. We then address the issue of
their mobility, focusing our attention on the conditions for the experimental
observability of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier. Finally we report on the
generation of self-trapped structures in two and three dimensions. Discrete
solitons may open alternative routes for the manipulation and transport of
Bose-Einstein condensates.Comment: 7 pages, 6 eps figure
Laser-assisted guiding of electric discharges around objects
Electric breakdown in air occurs for electric fields exceeding 34 kV/cm and results in a large current surge that propagates along unpredictable trajectories. Guiding such currents across specific paths in a controllable manner could allow protection against lightning strikes and high-voltage capacitor discharges. Such capabilities can be used for delivering charge to specific targets, for electronic jamming, or for applications associated with electric welding and machining. We show that judiciously shaped laser radiation can be effectively used to manipulate the discharge along a complex path and to produce electric discharges that unfold along a predefined trajectory. Remarkably, such laser-induced arcing can even circumvent an object that completely occludes the line of sight
Soliton control in modulated optically-induced photonic lattices
We discuss soliton control in reconfigurable optically-induced photonic
lattices created by three interfering beams. We reveal novel dynamical regimes
for strongly localized solitons, including binary switching and soliton
revivals through resonant wave mixing.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Content modifie
Current relaxation in nonlinear random media
We study the current relaxation of a wave packet in a nonlinear random sample
coupled to the continuum and show that the survival probability decays as . For intermediate times , the exponent
satisfies a scaling law where is
the nonlinearity strength and is the localization length of the
corresponding random system with . For and we find a universal decay with which is a signature of the
{\it nonlinearity-induced delocalization}. Experimental evidence should be
observable in coupled nonlinear optical waveguides.Comment: revised version, PRL in press, 4 pages, 4 figs (fig 3 with reduced

Demonstration of all-optical beam steering in modulated photonic lattices
We demonstrate experimentally all-optical beam steering in modulated photonic
lattices induced optically by three beam interference in a biased
photorefractive crystal. We identify and characterize the key physical
parameters governing the beam steering, and show that the spatial resolution
can be enhanced by the additional effect of nonlinear beam self-localization.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Complexes of stationary domain walls in the resonantly forced Ginsburg-Landau equation
The parametrically driven Ginsburg-Landau equation has well-known stationary
solutions -- the so-called Bloch and Neel, or Ising, walls. In this paper, we
construct an explicit stationary solution describing a bound state of two
walls. We also demonstrate that stationary complexes of more than two walls do
not exist.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Physical Review
