Study of Radiative Leptonic D Meson Decays

We study the radiative leptonic DD meson decays of D^+_{(s)}\to \l^+\nu_{\l}\gamma (\l=e,\mu,\tau), D0→ννˉγD^0\to \nu\bar{\nu}\gamma and D^0\to \l^+\l^-\gamma (l=e,μl=e,\mu) within the light front quark model. In the standard model, we find that the decay branching ratios of D(s)+→e+νeγD^+_{(s)}\to e^+\nu_e\gamma, D(s)+→μ+νμγD^+_{(s)}\to\mu^+\nu_{\mu}\gamma and D(s)+→τ+ντγD^+_{(s)}\to\tau^+\nu_{\tau}\gamma are 6.9×10−66.9\times 10^{-6} (7.7×10−57.7\times 10^{-5}), 2.5×10−52.5\times 10^{-5} (2.6×10−42.6\times 10^{-4}), and 6.0×10−66.0\times 10^{-6} (3.2×10−43.2\times 10^{-4}), and that of D^0\to\l^+\l^-\gamma (\l=e,\mu) and D0→ννˉγD^0\to\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma are 6.3×10−116.3\times 10^{-11} and 2.7×10−162.7\times 10^{-16}, respectively.Comment: 23 pages, 6 Figures, LaTex file, a reference added, to be published in Mod. A cellulose liquid crystal motor: a steam engine of the second kind

    Get PDF
The salient feature of liquid crystal elastomers and networks is strong coupling between orientational order and mechanical strain. Orientational order can be changed by a wide variety of stimuli, including the presence of moisture. Changes in the orientation of constituents give rise to stresses and strains, which result in changes in sample shape. We have utilized this effect to build soft cellulose-based motor driven by humidity. The motor consists of a circular loop of cellulose film, which passes over two wheels. When humid air is present near one of the wheels on one side of the film, with drier air elsewhere, rotation of the wheels results. As the wheels rotate, the humid film dries. The motor runs so long as the difference in humidity is maintained. Our cellulose liquid crystal motor thus extracts mechanical work from a difference in humidity

Axion-photon Couplings in Invisible Axion Models

    Get PDF
We reexamine the axion-photon couplings in various invisible axion models motivated by the recent proposal of using optical interferometry at the ASST facility in the SSCL to search for axion. We illustrate that the assignment of U(1)PQU(1)_{PQ} charges for the fermion fields plays an important role in determining the couplings. Several simple non-minimal invisible axion models with suppressed and enhanced axion-photon couplings are constructed, respectively. We also discuss the implications of possible new experiments to detect solar axions by conversion to XX-rays in a static magnetic apparatus tracking the sun.Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX fil

Off-pump epicardial ventricular reconstruction restores left ventricular twist and reverses remodeling in an ovine anteroapical aneurysm model

ObjectiveThe loss of normal apical rotation is associated with left ventricular (LV) remodeling and systolic dysfunction in patients with congestive heart failure after myocardial infarction. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of epicardial ventricular reconstruction, an off-pump, less-invasive surgical reshaping technique, on myocardial strain, LV twist, and the potential alteration of myocardial fiber orientation in an ovine model of LV anteroapical aneurysm.MethodsLV anteroapical myocardial infarction was induced by coil embolization of the left anterior descending artery. Eight weeks after occlusion, epicardial ventricular reconstruction was performed using left thoracotomy under fluoroscopic guidance in 8 sheep to completely exclude the scar. The peak systolic longitudinal/circumferential strains and LV twist were evaluated using speckle tracking echocardiography before (baseline), after device implantation, and at 6 weeks of follow-up.ResultsEpicardial ventricular reconstruction was completed in all sheep without any complications. Immediately after device implantation, LV twist significantly increased (4.18 ± 1.40 vs baseline 1.97 ± 1.92; P = .02). The ejection fraction had increased 17% and LV end-systolic volume had decreased 40%. The global longitudinal strain increased from −5.3% to −9.1% (P < .05). Circumferential strain increased in both middle and apical LV segments, with the greatest improvement in the inferior lateral wall (from −11.4% to −20.6%, P < .001). These effects were maintained ≥6 weeks after device implantation without redilation.ConclusionsLess invasive than alternative therapies, epicardial ventricular reconstruction on the off-pump beating heart can restore LV twist and systolic strain and reverse LV remodeling in an ovine anteroapical aneurysm model

Magnetic moments of the low-lying JP= 1/2−J^P=\,1/2^-, 3/2−3/2^- Λ\Lambda resonances within the framework of the chiral quark model

The magnetic moments of the low-lying spin-parity JP=J^P= 1/2−1/2^-, 3/2−3/2^- Λ\Lambda resonances, like, for example, Λ(1405)\Lambda(1405) 1/2−1/2^-, Λ(1520)\Lambda(1520) 3/2−3/2^-, as well as their transition magnetic moments, are calculated using the chiral quark model. The results found are compared with those obtained from the nonrelativistic quark model and those of unitary chiral theories, where some of these states are generated through the dynamics of two hadron coupled channels and their unitarization

Periodic solutions for a class of nonlinear partial differential equations in higher dimension

We prove the existence of periodic solutions in a class of nonlinear partial differential equations, including the nonlinear Schroedinger equation, the nonlinear wave equation, and the nonlinear beam equation, in higher dimension. Our result covers cases where the bifurcation equation is infinite-dimensional, such as the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with zero mass, for which solutions which at leading order are wave packets are shown to exist.Comment: 34 page
