    Using Social Justice Issues to Engage Students

    The Social Justice Issue is a project-based assignment in which students organize in groups to address a social justice issue of their choice. In addition, students are asked to connect theory and practice (praxis) by looking for resources in their community to offer possible recommendations, solutions and resources. Topics researched include: Voting Rights; Sexual Assault At Colleges; The Racialization of Cannabis Use; Mental Healthcare; Legalizing Prostitution; Gender Pay Gap; Black Lives Matter; LGBTQA Rights Stigma Suicide & Homelessness; Japan\u27s Patriarchal Society; RBG - Open Supreme Court Position; ICE Inhumane Treatment of Immigrants; Universal Healthcare; and Mental Health Stigma. This teaching practice is used to help students accomplish the course learning outcomes, and to promote engagement, deep learning, metacognition, and group collaboration. Students identified the Social Justice Issue Project as the most beneficial assignment they had done in class, stating: “The social justice project really helped with diving deeper into subjects I would\u27ve never really looked into.” “I really enjoyed working on the social justice project. It was informative, and I learned so much. I thought I knew about most of the issues, but there\u27s so much left for me to learn and research about.” “I would say our Social Justice Project midterm has been the most beneficial. It got us thinking about real world issues and how those relate to our class.     Experiencing Anti-Immigrant Policies on Both Sides of the U.S./Mexico Borderland: A Comparative Study of Mexican and Iranian Families

    The experiences of Mexican and Iranian immigrant families are often unheard and unpacked. The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine how race, ethnicity, and national identity are at the core of the sociopolitical and economic issues that Latino and Iranian families undergo in the United States. Using critical race theory as a framework, this research analyzed the ways in which Mexican immigrant families who were deported, and Iranian-immigrant families living in the United States, have been differently affected by post 9/11 anti-immigrant policies and by zero tolerance policies enacted by the Trump administration. The research question guiding this study was: How do U.S. anti-immigrant policies affect Iranian and Mexican immigrant families and their children’s futures? Our findings uncovered that both groups were negatively affected, however, in different ways. Iranian immigrant parents worried about their socioeconomic status in the United States and their children’s future. They also feared that their relatives might not be able to visit them due to the U.S. Muslim Travel Ban placed on people from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran. On the other hand, Mexican immigrants who lived in the United States undocumented were deported to Mexico. However, after deportation, and responding to the threat of the Trump administration to deport millions more, the Mexican government provided dual citizenship to U.S.-born children of Mexican returnees to facilitate their access to government services, including education.     Accounting for convective effects in zero-Mach-number thermoacoustic models

    This paper presents a methodology to account for some mean-flow effects on thermo-acoustic instabilities when using the zero-Mach-number assumption. It is shown that when a computational domain is represented under the M=0 assumption, a nonzero-Mach-number element can simply be taken into account by imposing a proper acoustic impedance at the boundaries so as to mimic the mean flow effects in the outer, not computed flow domain. A model that accounts for the coupling between acoustic and entropy waves is presented. It relies on a “delayed entropy coupled boundary condition” (DECBC) for the Helmholtz equation satisfied by the acoustic pressure. The model proves able to capture low-frequency entropic modes even without mean-flow terms in the fluctuating pressure equation

    APPLICATION OF BIOMECHANICS TO THE PREVENTION OF OVERLOAD INJURIES IN ELITE SOCCER PLAYERS.

    Structural alterations of the foot and inadequate design of sports footwear, as well as overtraining, have been determined to be risk factors for overload injuries during sports practice. A biomechanical analysis protocol was designed to study both, the foot and sports footwear statically and dynamically. This protocol was applied on 47 soccer players of the Spanish Premier League. Amongst the results we should point out that 53.3% of the players had cavus feet. 14.8% of the players deformed the boots. 44.7% of the players studied registered high pressures over the metatarsal heads. and 19.1 % registered high ones at the first toe. 44.7% of the players showed an excessive supination pattern. The data obtained gave us information about the static and dynamic patterns of the elite soccer player. With the individual information the assessment of suitable footwear was carried out for each player. The correct application of this protocol could be used in the diagnosis or prevention of overtraining and in the detection of foot and gait pathologies

    El fibrohistiocitoma maligno óseo es un tumor de estirpe mesenquimal poco frecuente, pero de alta agresividad. Se suele presentar de forma primaria, aunque a veces lo hace sobre lesiones previas en el hueso. Puede ser difícil de diferenciar histológicamente de otros tumores, pero es una entidad propia desde el punto de vista anatomopatológico. Presentamos un paciente con enfermedad de Paget que desarrolló un fibrohistiocitoma maligno óseo en el fémur sobre el hueso pagético. Fue tratado mediante desarticulación de cadera. No se usó quimioterapia como tratamiento coadyuvante debido a su avanzada edad y situación basal. A los 18 meses se encuentra asintomático y sin signos de recurrencia. Se hace una revisión de la literatura acerca de este tumor.Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of bone is a rare but highly agressive mesenchimal tumor. It usually arises as a primary tumor but sometimes it can be associated with pre-existing bone abnormalities. Histologically it can be missdiagnosed with other tumors. We report a case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of bone in the femur in a patient with Paget's disease treated by hip desarticulation. We didn't use chemotherapy because his elderly status. At 18 months follow up, the patient is symptom-free and neither local recurrence nor metastasis have been found. A review of the literature has been carried out

    El pseudoaneurisma es una complicación infrecuente en la cirugía ortopédica de rodilla. Los pocos casos descritos generalmente están en relación con cirugía artroscópica. Presentamos un caso de pseudoaneurisma de la arteria geniculada superolateral secundario a artroplastia de rodilla en un varón de 69 años. El diagnóstico se realizó mediante arteriografía. Se trató con éxito mediante hemostasia y resección química.Pseudoaneurysm is an uncommon complication in knee orthopaedic surgery. There are few cases reported an most of them are secondary to arthroscopic techniques. We report a case of pseudoaneurysm of the superolateral genicular artery after knee arthroplasty in a 69-year-old-man. The diagnosis was made with arteriographay, and treatment was a successful hemostasia and surgical resection

    Non-linear simulations of combustion instabilities with a quasi-1D Navier-Stokes code

    As lean premixed combustion systems are more susceptible to combustion instabilities than non-premixed systems, there is an increasing demand for improved numerical design tools that can predict the occurrence of combustion instabilities with high accuracy. The inherent non-linearities in combustion instabilities can be of crucial importance, and we here propose an approach in which the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes and scalar transport equations are solved for geometries of variable cross-section. The focus is on attached flames, and for this purpose a new phenomenological model for the unsteady heat release from a flame front is introduced. In the attached flame method (AFM) the heat release occurs over the full length of the flame. The non-linear code with the use of the AFM approach is validated against results from an experimental study of thermoacoustic instabilities in oxy-fuel flames by Ditaranto and Hals [Combustion and Flame, 146, 493-512 (2006)]. The numerical simulations are in accordance with the experimental measurements and both the frequencies and the amplitudes of the resonant acoustic pressure modes are reproduced with good accuracy.Comment: Submitted for publication in "Journal of Sound and Vibration" (30 pages, 8 figures
