Limits To Certainty in QoS Pricing and Bandwidth

    Get PDF
Advanced services require more reliable bandwidth than currently provided by the Internet Protocol, even with the reliability enhancements provided by TCP. More reliable bandwidth will be provided through QoS (quality of service), as currently discussed widely. Yet QoS has some implications beyond providing ubiquitous access to advance Internet service, which are of interest from a policy perspective. In particular, what are the implications for price of Internet services? Further, how will these changes impact demand and universal service for the Internet. This paper explores the relationship between certainty of bandwidth and certainty of price for Internet services over a statistically shared network and finds that these are mutually exclusive goals.Comment: 29th TPRC Conference, 200

An Atomicity-Generating Layer for Anonymous Currencies

    Get PDF
Atomicity is a necessary element for reliable transactions (Financial Service Technology Consortium, 1995; Camp, Sirbu and Tygar, 1995; Tygar, 1996). Anonymity is also an issue of great importance not only to designers of commerce systems, (Chaum, 1982; Chaum, 1989; Chaum, Fiat & Naor, 1988; Medvinski, 1993), but also to those concerned with the societal effects of information technologies (Branscomb 1994. Compaine 1985, National Research Council 1996, Neumann 1993, Poole 1983). Yet there has been a tradeoff between these two elements in commerce system design. Reliable systems, which provide highly atomic transactions, offer limited anonymity (Visa, 1995; Sirbu and Tygar, 1995; Mastercard, 1995, Low, Maxemchuk and Paul, 1993) . Anonymous systems (Chaum, 1985; Chaum 1989; Medvinski, 1993) do not offer reliable transactions as shown in Yee, 1994; Camp, 1999; and Tygar, 1996. This work illustrates that any electronic token currency can be made reliable with the addition of this atomicity-generating layer.IB

Using a two-scintillator paddle telescope for cosmic ray flux measurements

    Get PDF
A two-scintillator paddle muon telescope with variable angular acceptance at the earth\u27s surface was used to study correlations between flux distribution and barometric pressure. The detector was placed in 2 different locations around Georgia State University with varying paddle separations of 0, 7, and 14 inches. Correlation and anti-correlation analyses were conducted by using the muon count from the detector along with the barometric pressure, surface temperature, stratospheric temperature and solar activity. It was observed that there was a short and long-term variation relationship between cosmic ray counts and barometric pressure and also cosmic ray counts and temperature. No significant relationship was found between cosmic ray flux and solar activity. A new two-scintillator paddle telescope with larger detecting area was constructed in order to observe a stronger correlation between cosmic ray flux and pressure

The Complexities of Communicating with Children about Mental Health Issues

    Get PDF
Communicating with children about any difficult topic is complex, but especially when the topic is about mental health. Piaget’s stages of cognitive development and Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development sets the stage for understanding how age appropriate conversations can aid in children’s understanding of mental health issues. Then, by conducting a thorough literature review, three common areas where these conversations take place were identified; at home, at school, and at a medical setting. All of these settings have strengths and weaknesses in their ability to facilitate quality mental health conversations with children. After examining these settings, this paper explores some of the current themes and suggestions for communicating to children about mental health issues. These suggestions include using simple language, using activities to engage the child, and relating the child to the information. This paper then discussed multiple resources for adults aiding these conversations such as scripts written by psychologists. In the interest of exploring accessibility to support these conversations for the adult facilitators, this paper turns to Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT. Overall, the use of ChatGPT to provide adult facilitators with scripts appears promising with a few limitations

Performance Analysis of a Secure IEEE 802.11B Wireless Network Incorporating Personal Digital Assistants

Research results of this thesis indicate very poor performance of a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) utilizing PDAs. Network throughput is adversely effected most by VPN implementation and slightly by increased file size. The client distance factor has virtually no effect on the throughput. The impact of each of these factor levels is small when compared to the magnitude of the overall mean throughput (\u3c6%). The average network throughput with the PDA client is much lower than expected (=11,500 bps). This is attributed to several factors with degradation primarily resulting from limitations of the PDA hardware and O/S. Because of the low throughput values achieved (regardless if VPN is on or off), an operational WLAN with PDAs (as tested) is not feasible. Operational use of the network tested would require an in-depth analysis of the type of network traffic and performance required to maintain functionality. To deploy such a system, custom designed Winsock controls would need to be implemented to minimize limitations imposed by the PDA. As PDA technology continues to develop, future hardware and O/S functionality may provide a more robust platform for network communications. The battery life of the PDA and packet battery combination is observed to be about 164 minutes with additional jackets adding about 90 minutes each
