    Detection is the central problem in real-word spelling correction

    Real-word spelling correction differs from non-word spelling correction in its aims and its challenges. Here we show that the central problem in real-word spelling correction is detection. Methods from non-word spelling correction, which focus instead on selection among candidate corrections, do not address detection adequately, because detection is either assumed in advance or heavily constrained. As we demonstrate in this paper, merely discriminating between the intended word and a random close variation of it within the context of a sentence is a task that can be performed with high accuracy using straightforward models. Trigram models are sufficient in almost all cases. The difficulty comes when every word in the sentence is a potential error, with a large set of possible candidate corrections. Despite their strengths, trigram models cannot reliably find true errors without introducing many more, at least not when used in the obvious sequential way without added structure. The detection task exposes weakness not visible in the selection task

    The bumble bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombus) of Arkansas, fifty years later

    Many species of bumble bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombus Latreille) are declining throughout their ranges in North America, yet detecting population trends can be difficult when historical survey data are lacking.  In the present study, contemporary data is compared to a 1965 survey to detect changes in bumble bee distributions throughout Arkansas.  Using county-level records as a point of comparison to look for changes in state-wide occurrence among species over time, we find that state-level changes reflect national trends.  Contemporary records of Bombus bimaculatus Cresson and B. impatiens Cresson have more than tripled, while records for B. pensylvanicus (De Geer) show a decline to 61% of historical levels.  Although B. fervidus (Fabricius) has been reported infrequently in the state, misidentifications may have led to an overestimation of the state’s species richness.  In addition to an updated assessment of the bumble bees of Arkansas, we also provide new, localized information on the seasonal phenology and plant preferences of each species that can be used to guide conservation efforts

    Invariant states and rates of Convergence for a critical fluid model of a processor sharing queue

    This paper contains an asymptotic analysis of a fluid model for a heavily loaded processor sharing queue. Specifically, we consider the behavior of solutions of critical fluid models as time approaches \infty. The main theorems of the paper provide sufficient conditions for a fluid model solution to converge to an invariant state and, under slightly more restrictive assumptions, provide a rate of convergence. These results are used in a related work by Gromoll for establishing a heavy traffic diffusion approximation for a processor sharing queue

    Pathologic manifestations of levamisole-adulterated cocaine exposure.

    UnlabelledRheumatic manifestations of cocaine have been well described, but more recently, a dramatic increase in the levamisole-adulterated cocaine supply in the United States has disclosed unique pathologic consequences that are distinct from pure cocaine use. Most notably, patients show skin lesions and renal dysfunction in the setting of extremely high perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (p-ANCA). Unexpectedly, antibodies to myeloperoxidase, the typical target of p-ANCA, are relatively low if at all present. This discrepancy is due to the fact that p-ANCA seen in association with levamisole-adulterated cocaine exposure is often directed against atypical p-ANCA-associated antigens within the neutrophil granules such as human neutrophil elastase, lactoferrin, and cathepsin G. Biopsies of the skin lesions reveal leukocytoclastic vasculitis often involving both superficial and deep dermal vessels. Renal injury most typically manifests as crescentic and necrotizing pauci-immune glomerulonephritis.     Readmission Rates and Their Impact on Hospital Financial Performance: A Study of Washington Hospitals

    This longitudinal study examines whether readmission rates, made transparent through Hospital Compare, affect hospital financial performance by examining 98 hospitals in the State of Washington from 2012 to 2014. Readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), pneumonia (PN), and heart failure (HF) were examined against operating revenues per patient, operating expenses per patient, and operating margin. Using hospital-level fixed effects regression on 276 hospital year observations, the analysis indicated that a reduction in AMI readmission rates is related with increased operating revenues as expenses associated with costly treatments related with unnecessary readmissions are avoided. Additionally, reducing readmission rates is related with an increase in operating expenses. As a net effect, increased PN readmission rates may show marginal increase in operating margin because of the higher operating revenues due to readmissions. However, as readmissions continue to happen, a gradual increase in expenses due to greater use of resources may lead to decreased profitability

    Diffusion limits for shortest remaining processing time queues

    We present a heavy traffic analysis for a single server queue with renewal arrivals and generally distributed i.i.d. service times, in which the server employs the Shortest Remaining Processing Time (SRPT) policy. Under typical heavy traffic assumptions, we prove a diffusion limit theorem for a measure-valued state descriptor, from which we conclude a similar theorem for the queue length process. These results allow us to make some observations on the queue length optimality of SRPT. In particular, they provide the sharpest illustration of the well-known tension between queue length optimality and quality of service for this policy.Comment: 19 pages; revised, fixed typos.     Intrabody Gene Therapy Ameliorates Motor, Cognitive, and Neuropathological Symptoms in Multiple Mouse Models of Huntington's Disease

    Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease resulting from the expansion of a glutamine repeat in the huntingtin (Htt) protein. Current therapies are directed at managing symptoms such as chorea and psychiatric disturbances. In an effort to develop a therapy directed at disease prevention we investigated the utility of highly specific, anti-Htt intracellular antibodies (intrabodies). We previously showed that V_(L)12.3, an intrabody recognizing the N terminus of Htt, and Happ1, an intrabody recognizing the proline-rich domain of Htt, both reduce mHtt-induced toxicity and aggregation in cell culture and brain slice models of HD. Due to the different mechanisms of action of these two intrabodies, we then tested both in the brains of five mouse models of HD using a chimeric adeno-associated virus 2/1 (AAV2/1) vector with a modified CMV enhancer/chicken β-actin promoter. V_(L)12.3 treatment, while beneficial in a lentiviral model of HD, has no effect on the YAC128 HD model and actually increases severity of phenotype and mortality in the R6/2 HD model. In contrast, Happ1 treatment confers significant beneficial effects in a variety of assays of motor and cognitive deficits. Happ1 also strongly ameliorates the neuropathology found in the lentiviral, R6/2, N171-82Q, YAC128, and BACHD models of HD. Moreover, Happ1 significantly prolongs the life span of N171-82Q mice. These results indicate that increasing the turnover of mHtt using AAV-Happ1 gene therapy represents a highly specific and effective treatment in diverse mouse models of HD
