Measurement of an individual entrepreneur's social capital: a multidimensional model

The aim of this paper is twofold. First of all, we participate in the open discussion on the nature of social capital and we show that the one-dimensional approach is not enough to capture the complex nature of social capital. Second, we present, implement and validate a specific three-dimensional measurement tool that can be used to analyze the role of social capital in further entrepreneurship research. The measurement tool is implemented through a Structural Equation Model, which is estimated and validated from a database including information from 282 Argentinean entrepreneurs who answered a questionnaire specifically designed for this research. Our measurement model considers the dimensions proposed by Koka and Prescott (Strategic Management Journal, 23:795-816, 2002), i.e. relational, resources and structural.Fil: Fornoni, Mariel. Multidimensional social capital in new ventures

[EN] This paper analyzes and provides empirical evidence on how three different dimensions of social capital (structural, relational, and resources) have a direct causal relation on the performance of financial service start-ups. To this end, a structural equation model is estimated and validated from a database, including information from 142 Argentinean entrepreneurs who answered a questionnaire specifically designed for this research. The main finding of the paper is that the main source of value of social capital for an entrepreneur is the existence of high-quality links. Moreover, the quality of the entrepreneur's links is even more important than their quantity. This conclusion has relevant managerial and policy implications, since it suggests that entrepreneurs must focus their efforts not so much on increasing their number of contacts, but on establishing, developing, and enhancing a small number of high-quality links. The authors thank both the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology, and the European Feder Funds for financial support under projects SEJ2007-66581 and ECO-2010-20584Vila, JE.; Fornoni, M.; Palacios Marqués, D. Innovation, progress, entrepreneurship and cultural aspects

    No full text
In the case of economic progress, some of the literature has considered economic growth and economic progress to be the same thing. However, there is a relevant difference between the two concepts. As Holcombe states, economic growth considers the quantity of products and economic progress the quality of products. Innovation has been considered as a key factor to promote economic progress. A culture would have a direct and an indirect effect on innovation through entrepreneurship. The goal of this paper is to analyze the relationship between culture and innovation. To carry out this study, an empirical estimation has been developed for the case of 11 countries. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC
