Flows and Non-thermal Velocities in Solar Active Regions Observed with the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer on Hinode: A Tracer of Active Region Sources of Heliospheric Magnetic Fields?
From Doppler velocity maps of active regions constructed from spectra
obtained by the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on the Hinode
spacecraft we observe large areas of outflow (20-50 km/s) that can persist for
at least a day. These outflows occur in areas of active regions that are faint
in coronal spectral lines formed at typical quiet Sun and active region
temperatures. The outflows are positively correlated with non-thermal
velocities in coronal plasmas. The bulk mass motions and non-thermal velocities
are derived from spectral line centroids and line widths, mostly from a strong
line of Fe XII at 195.12 Angstroms. The electron temperature of the outflow
regions estimated from an Fe XIII to Fe XII line intensity ratio is about
1.2-1.4 MK. The electron density of the outflow regions derived from a density
sensitive intensity ratio of Fe XII lines is rather low for an active region.
Most regions average around 7E10+8 cm(-3), but there are variations on pixel
spatial scales of about a factor of 4. We discuss results in detail for two
active regions observed by EIS. Images of active regions in line intensity,
line width, and line centroid are obtained by rastering the regions. We also
discuss data from the active regions obtained from other orbiting spacecraft
that support the conclusions obtained from analysis of the EIS spectra. The
locations of the flows in the active regions with respect to the longitudinal
photospheric magnetic fields suggest that these regions might be tracers of
long loops and/or open magnetic fields that extend into the heliosphere, and
thus the flows could possibly contribute significantly to the solar wind.Comment: one tex file, 11 postscript figure file
Studies on the physics and chemistry of estuarine waters In Chesapeake Bay
Estuarine waters are understood to be those water masses which by virtue of their position are directly subject to the combined action of river and tidal currents. They may be considered to reflect certain dominant forces as well as progressive trends that determine their individualistic though changing hydrographic as well as biologic properties. The factors that lend individuality to these bodies may exhibit profound differences in different latitudes and yet, in certain fundamental respects, the waters possess important characteristics in common...
Atomic Level Strain Induced by Static and Dynamic Oxygen Vacancies on Reducible Oxide Surfaces
Surface strain often controls properties of the material including charge
transport and chemical reactivity. Localized surface strain is measured with
atomic resolution on (111) ceria nanoparticle surfaces using environmental
transmission electron microscopy under different redox conditions. Density
Functional Theory (DFT) coupled with TEM image simulations have been used for
aid in interpreting the experimental data. Oxygen vacancy creation/annihilation
introduces strain at surface and near surface regions on cation sublattice.
Static and fluxional strainmaps are generated from images at these different
conditions and compared. While fluxional strain is highest at locations
associated with unstable vacancies at active sites, highly inhomogeneous static
strain fields comprising of alternating tensile/compressing strain is seen at
surface and subsurfaces linked to the presence of stable oxygen vacancies.
Interestingly, both stable and unstable oxygen vacancies are found within a few
atomic spacing of each other on the same surface. The static strain pattern
depends on the ambient inside TEM. Oxidizing environments tend to lower vacancy
concentrations at the surface whereas a highly reducing environment created
using high electron dose creates oxygen vacancies everywhere (bulk and
surfaces) in the nanoparticle
A New Galactic 6cm Formaldehyde Maser
We report the detection of a new H2CO maser in the massive star forming
region G23.71-0.20 (IRAS 18324-0820), i.e., the fifth region in the Galaxy
where H2CO maser emission has been found. The new H2CO maser is located toward
a compact HII region, and is coincident in velocity and position with 6.7 GHz
methanol masers and with an IR source as revealed by Spitzer/IRAC GLIMPSE data.
The coincidence with an IR source and 6.7 GHz methanol masers suggests that the
maser is in close proximity to an embedded massive protostar. Thus, the
detection of H2CO maser emission toward G23.71-0.20 supports the trend that
H2CO 6cm masers trace molecular material very near young massive stellar
objects.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letter
APEX-CHAMP+ high-J CO observations of low-mass young stellar objects: II. Distribution and origin of warm molecular gas
The origin and heating mechanisms of warm (50<T<200 K) molecular gas in
low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) are strongly debated. Both passive
heating of the inner collapsing envelope by the protostellar luminosity as well
as active heating by shocks and by UV associated with the outflows or accretion
have been proposed. We aim to characterize the warm gas within protosteller
objects, and disentangle contributions from the (inner) envelope, bipolar
outflows and the quiescent cloud. High-J CO maps (12CO J=6--5 and 7--6) of the
immediate surroundings (up to 10,000 AU) of eight low-mass YSOs are obtained
with the CHAMP+ 650/850 GHz array receiver mounted on the APEX telescope. In
addition, isotopologue observations of the 13CO J=6--5 transition and [C I]
3P_2-3P_1 line were taken. Strong quiescent narrow-line 12CO 6--5 and 7--6
emission is seen toward all protostars. In the case of HH~46 and Ced 110 IRS 4,
the on-source emission originates in material heated by UV photons scattered in
the outflow cavity and not just by passive heating in the inner envelope. Warm
quiescent gas is also present along the outflows, heated by UV photons from
shocks. Shock-heated warm gas is only detected for Class 0 flows and the more
massive Class I sources such as HH~46. Outflow temperatures, estimated from the
CO 6--5 and 3--2 line wings, are ~100 K, close to model predictions, with the
exception of the L~1551 IRS 5 and IRAS 12496-7650, for which temperatures <50 K
are found. APEX-CHAMP+ is uniquely suited to directly probe a protostar's
feedback on its accreting envelope gas in terms of heating, photodissociation,
and outflow dispersal by mapping 1'x1' regions in high-J CO and [C I] lines.Comment: 18 pages, accepted by A&A, A version with the figures in higher

A measurement of the differential cross section for the two-body photodisintegration of 3He at theta_LAB = 90deg using tagged photons in the energy range 14 -- 31 MeV
The two-body photodisintegration of 3He has been investigated using tagged
photons with energies from 14 -- 31 MeV at MAX-lab in Lund, Sweden. The
two-body breakup channel was unambiguously identified by the (nonsimultaneous)
detection of both protons and deuterons. This approach was made feasible by the
over-determined kinematic situation afforded by the tagged-photon technique.
Proton- and deuteron-energy spectra were measured using four silicon
surface-barrier detector telescopes located at a laboratory angle of 90deg with
respect to the incident photon-beam direction. Average statistical and
systematic uncertainties of 5.7% and 6.6% in the differential cross section
were obtained for 11 photon-energy bins with an average width of 1.2 MeV. The
results are compared to previous experimental data measured at comparable
photon energies as well as to the results of two recent Faddeev calculations
which employ realistic potential models and take into account three-nucleon
forces and final-state interactions. Both the accuracy and precision of the
present data are improved over the previous measurements. The data are in good
agreement with most of the previous results, and favor the inclusion of
three-nucleon forces in the calculations.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures; further Referee comments addresse
Muscle Activity during Maximal Isometric Forearm Rotation Using a Power Grip
This study aimed to provide quantitative activation data for muscles of the forearm during pronation and supination while using a power grip. Electromyographic data was collected from 15 forearm muscles in 11 subjects while they performed maximal isometric pronating and supinating efforts in nine positions of forearm rotation. Biceps brachii was the only muscle with substantial activation in only one effort direction. It was significantly more active when supinating (”âŻ=âŻ52.1%, SDâŻ=âŻ17.5%) than pronating (”âŻ=âŻ5.1%, SDâŻ=âŻ4.8%, pâŻ\u3câŻ.001). All other muscles showed considerable muscle activity during both pronation and supination. Brachioradialis, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, pronator quadratus and pronator teres were significantly more active when pronating the forearm. Abductor pollicis longus and biceps brachii were significantly more active when supinating. This data highlights the importance of including muscles additional to the primary forearm rotators in a biomechanical analysis of forearm rotation. Doing so will further our understanding of forearm function and lead to the improved treatment of forearm fractures, trauma-induced muscle dysfunction and joint replacements
