Nostalgies tropicales. Bernardin de Saint-Pierre et les littératures francophones de l’océan Indien

Marquées par les représentations exemplaires d'un regard exotisant européen sur le monde naturel et " primitif ", les îles de l'océan Indien ont fait leur entrée dans l'espace littéraire par le biais des œuvres de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre et plus particulièrement, du Voyage à l'Île de France et du roman Paul et Virginie. Au cours des siècles, ces deux textes ont fourni à la fois les modèles de narration, les motifs et les thèmes qui sont devenus les références intertextuelles les plus importantes à partir desquelles et contre lesquelles se sont constitués les discours littéraires francophones de l'océan Indien, et surtout celui de l'île Maurice. Le présent article propose, dans un premier volet, une analyse des deux œuvres de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, puis dresse, en un deuxième temps, un tableau critique de leur influence sur l'écriture mauricienne, et plus particulièrement celles de Thomi Pitot, Le Clézio, Vijayen Valaydon et Marcel Cabon. Cette étude souligne en dernier lieu les rapports littéraires et culturels entre le centre et la périphérie, la France et la francophonie non européenne.Overshadowed by the very strong European representations of wild and natural worlds, the islands of the Indian Ocean have surfaced in the literary discourse mainly through the works of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre and more specifically with the Voyage à l'Île de France and the novel, Paul et Virginie. Over the years, these two texts have become the one intercultural source and reference - should it be for narrative models, subjects or motives - according to and against which the literary discourses of the region evolved, and especially that of the Mauritian Island. The present article presents at first an analysis of the two works of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre and then goes on to offer a critical overview of their impact and influence on Mauritian literary productions, more specifically those of Thomi Pitot, Le Clézio, Vijayen Valaydon and Marcel Cabon. It concludes by discussing the literary and cultural relations between the center and the periphery, France and the non-european francophone countries

L’Amérindien de la tradition populaire dans les almanachs canadiens-français

À la suite d’une brève présentation de l’importance socioculturelle des almanachs canadiens-français, cette contribution analyse les formes de présence de la figure de l’Amérindien dans ce corpus de 1850 à 1950. Très marginale jusqu’au début du xxe siècle, évoquée seulement de manière succincte et stéréotypée, la figure de l’Amérindien devient, dans des récits ethnographiques et des contes populaires publiés dans les almanachs par Marie-Victorin, Corinne Rocheleau et Rodolphe Girard, une composante majeure de l’identité canadienne-française et de sa mémoire historique, dont ce corpus a formé un support de diffusion de tout premier plan.Following a brief presentation of the sociocultural importance of French-Canadian almanachs, this contribution analyzes the forms of presence of the figure of the Amerindian in this medium from 1850 to 1950. Highly marginal up to the early twentieth century and evoked only in a succinct, stereotyped manner, the figure of the Amerindian becomes, in the ethnographic narratives and popular tales published in the almanachs by Marie-Victorin, Corinne Rocheleau and Rodolphe Girard, a major component of French-Canadian identity and its historic memory, for which this body of work was a premier medium of dissemination

L’expérience de l’ ‘Autre’ des missionnaires et le discours anthropologique. À propos des ‘Nouvelles de la presqu’île américaine de Californie’ (1772) du missionnaire jésuite Johann Jakob Baegert

This contribution presents and analyzes the work of the Jesuit missionary Johann Jakob Baegert who was born in Alsatia in 1717 and sent to the Californian Peninsula in the mid-eighteenth century, in a threefold perspective: in the first part the specific characteristics of Baegert’s biography are presented and pointed out; the second part considers Baegert’s main work, the Nachrichten von der Amerikanischen Halbinsel Californien (Nouvelles de la presqu’île américaine de Californie) published in German in 1772 in Mannheim, as an ethnographic counter-discourse directed abstracts 381 against dominant European visions of South America and Lower California, exemplified in the article on the subject published by Bruzen de la Martinière in his Grand Dictionnaire géographique, historique et critique (1723). Finally, the third part of the contribution analyzes the anthropological dimensions of Baegert’s discourse, especially the use of comparisons and the perception of intercultural encounters and cultural particularities in his main work as well as in letters addressed to his brother, which were published in an Alsatian periodical

« Métissage ». Contours et enjeux d’un concept carrefour dans l’aire francophone

Cet article se veut à la fois théorique et orienté vers des questionnements historiques. Il se fonde d'une part sur la relecture d'un certain nombre d'ouvrages relatifs au métissage et, d'autre part, sur l'étude des formes d'usage du concept chez des écrivains et des intellectuels africains et caraïbes. L'auteur esquisse d'abord les significations du terme et le champ sémantique dans lequel il s'insère pour ensuite tracer un tableau des différentes formes de métissage. Enfin, il s'interroge sur les fonctions de l'usage de la notion de métissage des années 30 jusqu'à nos jours, où elle acquiert, dans le contexte de la réémergence des nationalismes en Europe de l'Est et du réemploi de notions comme celle de pureté ethnique, une nouvelle et brûlante actualité.This article is at once theoretical and historical in approach. It is based, on the one hand, on the re-reading of a certain number of works dealing with cultural crosscurrents and, on the other hand, on the study of the forms in which the concept is used among African and Caribbean writers and intellectuals. The author sketches first of all the significations of the term and the field of semantics into which it fits, in order to trace subsequently the different forms of cultural crosscurrents. Finally, he questions the functions of the uses made of the notion of cultural crosscurrents from the thirties to our day, in the context of the reemergence of East European nationalisms, and of the renewed use of notions such as that of ethnic purity, a new and burning issue in contemporary life
