DNA-psoralen: single-molecule experiments and first principles calculations
The authors measure the persistence and contour lengths of DNA-psoralen
complexes, as a function of psoralen concentration, for intercalated and
crosslinked complexes. In both cases, the persistence length monotonically
increases until a certain critical concentration is reached, above which it
abruptly decreases and remains approximately constant. The contour length of
the complexes exhibits no such discontinuous behavior. By fitting the relative
increase of the contour length to the neighbor exclusion model, we obtain the
exclusion number and the intrinsic intercalating constant of the psoralen-DNA
interaction. Ab initio calculations are employed in order to provide an

Assessment of the potentialities of recycled steel fibres for the reinforcement of cement based materials
Recent research is evidencing that adding steel fibres recycled from wasted tires can
improve the post-cracking behaviour of cement based materials, enhancing the ductility, energy
dissipation and impact resistance of elements made by this type of composites. As a consequence,
Recycled Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (RSFRC) appears as a promising candidate for both structural
and non-structural applications. To contribute for the assessment of the potentialities of RSFRC, an
experimental program composed of three series of notched beam bending tests with concrete reinforced
with 45, 60 and 90 kg/m3 of recycled steel fibres (RSF) was carried out by determining the post-cracking
residual strength parameters, fR,,j, defined according to the recommendations of the CEB-FIP Model Code
2010. Based on the obtained fR,,j, the constitutive laws characterizing these three RSFRC were determined
and used to estimate the reinforcement potentialities of RSFRC for structural applications. A data base
with fR,,j corresponding to industrial steel fibres (ISF) was built in order to compare the post-cracking
performance of RSFRC and concrete reinforced with Industrial steel fibres (ISF). This paper describes the

Dimensionamento amostral para determinação da condutividade elétrica individual de sementes de girassol.
RESUMO: O teste de condutividade elĂ©trica Ă© um teste de vigor de sementes utilizado para avaliar a qualidade das sementes e complementar o teste de germinação. O tamanho da amostra necessĂĄria para a estimação da mĂ©dia de condutividade elĂ©trica de sementes Ă© diretamente proporcional Ă variabilidade dos dados e confiabilidade desejada na estimativa. Uma tĂ©cnica adequada para dimensionamento amostral Ă© a utilização de intervalos de confiança, obtidos por reamostragem. Essa tĂ©cnica tem a vantagem de nĂŁo depender da distribuição de probabilidade dos dados. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar o tamanho de amostra necessĂĄrio para o teste de condutividade elĂ©trica individual em sementes de girassol. Foram utilizadas sete lotes de sementes de girassol, sendo trĂȘs lotes da cultivar HĂ©lio 250 (A, B e C), dois lotes da cultivar BRS 323 (D e E) e dois lotes da cultivar BRS 324 (F e G). O teste de condutividade elĂ©trica individual foi realizado com 400 sementes de cada lote e o tamanho de amostra foi determinado pelo nĂșmero de sementes a partir do qual a amplitude do intervalo de confiança de 95% (AIC95%) foi menor ou igual a 10, 15 e 20% da estimativa da mĂ©dia. Tempos de embebição de vinte e quatro hora possibilitam utilizar os menores tamanhos de amostras. O tamanho de amostra de 257 sementes Ă© recomendado para a amplitude do intervalo de confiança de 95% igual a 20% da estimativa da mĂ©dia
Experimental quality in the experiments of competition of hybrid in function of the variability in morphologic variables
O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar a relação entre a diferença mĂnima significativa em percentagem da mĂ©dia (DMS%) da variĂĄvel rendimento de grĂŁos, com a mĂ©dia e erro experimental das caracterĂsticas morfolĂłgicas observadas no decorrer do experimento, ciclo dos cultivares estudadas e nĂșmero de tratamentos adotados. Com os dados dos ensaios estaduais de competição de cultivares de milho no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, utilizou-se a anĂĄlise de trilha, tendo como variĂĄvel principal a DMS% e como variĂĄveis explicativas as demais variĂĄveis observadas nos experimentos, mostrando que variĂĄveis como rendimento de grĂŁos, altura da planta, altura de inserção da primeira espigas e nĂșmero final de plantas, com valores mais homogĂȘneos dentro de cada experimento, proporcionam um menor quadrado mĂ©dio do erro, fazendo com que a precisĂŁo do experimento seja melhorada.A study was performed to verify the relationship between the least significative difference in mean percentage (LSD%) of the variable grain yield and the mean and experimental error of the morphological characteristics observed throughout the experiment cultivar cicle, and the number of treatments in corn. Using data from a net of corn cultivars trials in the Rio Grande do Sul State, a pathy analysis was carried out, with LSD% as the main variable and as explaining variables some other variables measured in the trials. The results showed that variables such as grain yield, plant height, heigth of the ear and the final number of plants in corn, with more homogeneous values inside each trial, lead to a smaller mean square error, which reproved the experimental precision.Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias y Forestale
