    Effect of acid treatment on the structure of sepiolite.

    An ab initio determination of the structure of sepiolite after acid treatment (HCl 0.5 N for 24 h) was carried out using X-ray powder diffraction data. After acid treatment, the sections normal to the a and c axes presented discontinuities, ~2.25 Å wide, parallel to the (010) plane, with no electronic density maxima, thus suggesting that adjacent planes are joined by van der Waals-like residual links. Partial dissolution was detected on both octahedral and tetrahedral sheets, beginning by breaking the ribbons not along the edges, but in the centre, thus creating a 5.20x6.79 Å tunnel along the a axis. By interrupting the tetrahedral sheet, this mechanism changes the phyllosilicate-like nature of the sepiolite to an inosilicate-like structure.Peer reviewe

    Evidence for the activity and paleoseismicity of the Padul fault (Betic Cordillera, southern Spain)

    There is evidence of recent tectonic activity in the proximity of Padul, in the central sector of the Betic Cordillera. The principal active fault in this region is the Padul normal fault, running NW-SE, which displays spectacular geomorphological and structural features owing to its recent activity. However, there is no evidence of earthquakes of moderate-high magnitude occurring in this area during the historical or the instrumental period. In the vicinity of Padul we identified various soft-sediment deformation structures produced by liquefaction which we attributed to seismic shocks of a moderate-high magnitude. These structures are situated in detritic sediments, intercalated with layers of peat, which have enabled dating of these paleoearthquakes to the late Pleistocene (approx. 30,000 to 35,000 yr BP). Moreover, field observations in sediments of alluvial fans in the vicinity of the Padul fault, together with a retrodeformation analysis of an outcrop, enabled various deformation events to be dated to the recent Quaternary period.En el área de Padul, localizada en el sector central de la Cordillera Bética, existen numerosas evidencias de actividad tectónica reciente. La principal falla activa de la región es la falla normal de Padul, de dirección NW-SE, que presenta evidencias geomorfológicas y estructurales espectaculares de su actividad reciente. Sin embargo, no se tiene constancia de la ocurrencia de terremotos de magnitud moderada-alta en el área de Padul ni durante el periodo histórico ni el instrumental. En este sector hemos identificado varias estructuras sedimentarias de deformación producidas por licuefacción que interpretamos como resultado de sacudidas sísmicas de magnitud moderada-alta. Estas estructuras se localizan en sedimentos detríticos intercalados con niveles de turba que han permitido datar estos paleoterremotos como Pleistoceno superior (aproximadamente entre 30.000 y 35.000 años B.P.). Por otra parte, las observaciones de campo realizadas en algunos sedimentos de los abanicos aluviales de la zona de falla de Padul y el análisis de retrodeformación en un afloramiento han permitido identificar varios eventos de deformación durante el Cuaternario reciente

    A study was conducted on bricks sampled from the defense walls around the historic town of Pavia (northern Italy) erected during Roman (uncertain) and “Spanish”(sixteenth-seventeenth centuries) times. An analysis of colour, macro- and micro-chemical composition,mineralogical clusters and structural-textural features showed that similar raw materials were used in the manufacture of these bricks, although certain variations were identified: particle size is finer in Roman bricks, while the “Spanish” version contains ground carbonate and “chamotte” additives. The “Spanish” bricks,fired at lower temperatures, are more porous. The wide range of firing temperatures used to make “Spanish” bricks was very likely related to the intended use. The sporadic presence of maghemite is discussed in the context of the atmosphere prevailing in the kilns. The “Spanish” bricks are lighter in colour as a result of their carbonate content and lower firing temperature. These characteristics, which affect the weather resistance of the different types of brick, should be taken into account in restoration work.Se investigan ladrillos recogidos en las murallas defensivas de la histórica ciudad de Pavía (norte de Italia), que fueron construidas en tiempos romanos (no establecidos)y “españoles” (siglos XVI y XVII).En base al color, composición química tanto total como puntual, asociaciones mineralógicas y características texturales,se concluye que se utilizó una materia prima similar en ambas épocas, con algunas particularidades: granulometría más fina en los romanos, adición de carbonato molido y chamota en los “españoles”. Por su parte, la porosidad es mayor en los ladrillos “españoles”. El amplio rango de temperaturas de cocción observado para estos últimos debe estar relacionado con los distintos usos para los cuales fueron destinados. La presencia esporádica de maghemita se discute, además, en función del tipo de atmósfera imperante en el horno de cocción. El color de los ladrillos “españoles” es más claro, como corresponde a su mayor contenido en carbonatos y menor temperatura de cocción. Estas características ejercen una notable influencia en la resistencia a la meteorización de los distintos tipos de ladrillos y deben, ser tenidas en cuenta ala hora de elaborar posibles planes de restauración

    Local Zeta Functions and Koba–Nielsen String Amplitudes

    This article is a survey of our recent work on the connections between Koba–Nielsen amplitudes and local zeta functions (in the sense of Gel’fand, Weil, Igusa, Sato, Bernstein, Denef, Loeser, etc.). Our research program is motivated by the fact that the p-adic strings seem to be related in some interesting ways with ordinary strings. p-Adic string amplitudes share desired characteristics with their Archimedean counterparts, such as crossing symmetry and invariance under Möbius transformations. A direct connection between p-adic amplitudes and the Archimedean ones is through the limit p→1. Gerasimov and Shatashvili studied the limit p→1 of the p-adic effective action introduced by Brekke, Freund, Olson and Witten. They showed that this limit gives rise to a boundary string field theory, which was previously proposed by Witten in the context of background independent string theory. Explicit computations in the cases of 4 and 5 points show that the Feynman amplitudes at the tree level of the Gerasimov–Shatashvili Lagrangian are related to the limit p→1 of the p-adic Koba–Nielsen amplitudes. At a mathematical level, this phenomenon is deeply connected with the topological zeta functions introduced by Denef and Loeser. A Koba–Nielsen amplitude is just a new type of local zeta function, which can be studied using embedded resolution of singularities. In this way, one shows the existence of a meromorphic continuations for the Koba–Nielsen amplitudes as functions of the kinematic parameters. The Koba–Nielsen local zeta functions are algebraic-geometric integrals that can be defined over arbitrary local fields (for instance R, C, Qp, Fp((T))), and it is completely natural to expect connections between these objects. The limit p tends to one of the Koba–Nielsen amplitudes give rise to new amplitudes which we have called Denef–Loeser amplitudes.     Stabilization of high-order solutions of the cubic Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation

    In this paper we consider the stabilization of non-fundamental unstable stationary solutions of the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Specifically we study the stabilization of radially symmetric solutions with nodes and asymmetric complex stationary solutions. For the first ones we find partial stabilization similar to that recently found for vortex solutions while for the later ones stabilization does not seem possible

    Distribution of melanopsin positive neurons in pigmented and albino mice: evidence for melanopsin interneurons in the mouse retina.

    Here we have studied the population of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) in adult pigmented and albino mice. Our data show that although pigmented (C57Bl/6) and albino (Swiss) mice have a similar total number of ipRGCs, their distribution is slightly different: while in pigmented mice ipRGCs are more abundant in the temporal retina, in albinos the ipRGCs are more abundant in superior retina. In both strains, ipRGCs are located in the retinal periphery, in the areas of lower Brn3a(+)RGC density. Both strains also contain displaced ipRGCs (d-ipRGCs) in the inner nuclear layer (INL) that account for 14% of total ipRGCs in pigmented mice and 5% in albinos. Tracing from both superior colliculli shows that 98% (pigmented) and 97% (albino) of the total ipRGCs, become retrogradely labeled, while double immunodetection of melanopsin and Brn3a confirms that few ipRGCs express this transcription factor in mice. Rather surprisingly, application of a retrograde tracer to the optic nerve (ON) labels all ipRGCs, except for a sub-population of the d-ipRGCs (14% in pigmented and 28% in albino, respectively) and melanopsin positive cells residing in the ciliary marginal zone (CMZ) of the retina. In the CMZ, between 20% (pigmented) and 24% (albino) of the melanopsin positive cells are unlabeled by the tracer and we suggest that this may be because they fail to send an axon into the ON. As such, this study provides the first evidence for a population of melanopsin interneurons in the mammalian retina

    Poly-l/dl-lactic acid films functionalized with collagen IV as carrier substrata for corneal epithelial stem cells

    Limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs) are responsible for the renewal of corneal epithelium. Cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation is the current treatment of choice for restoring the loss or dysfunction of LESCs. To perform this procedure, a substratum is necessary for in vitro culturing of limbal epithelial cells and their subsequent transplantation onto the ocular surface. In this work, we evaluated poly-L/DL-lactic acid 70:30 (PLA) films functionalized with type IV collagen (col IV) as potential in vitro carrier substrata for LESCs. We first demonstrated that PLA-col IV films were biocompatible and suitable for the proliferation of human corneal epithelial cells. Subsequently, limbal epithelial cell suspensions, isolated from human limbal rings, were cultivated using culture medium that did not contain animal components. The cells adhered significantly faster to PLA-col IV films than to tissue culture plastic (TCP). The mRNA expression levels for the LESC specific markers, K15, P63α and ABCG2 were similar or greater (significantly in the case of K15) in limbal epithelial cells cultured on PLA-col IV films than limbal epithelial cells cultured on TCP. The percentage of cells expressing the corneal (K3, K12) and the LESC (P63α, ABCG2) specific markers was similar for both substrata. These results suggest that the PLA-col IV films promoted LESC attachment and helped to maintain their undifferentiated stem cell phenotype.     Variability of the Martian thermosphere during eight Martian years as simulated by a ground-to-exosphere global circulation model

    Using a ground-to-exosphere general circulation model for Mars we have simulated the variability of the dayside temperatures at the exobase during eight Martian years (MY, from MY24 to MY31, approximately from 1998 to 2013), taking into account the observed day-to-day solar and dust load variability. We show that the simulated temperatures are in good agreement with the exospheric temperatures derived from Precise Orbit Determination of Mars Global Surveyor. We then study the effects of the solar variability and of two planetary-encircling dust storms on the simulated temperatures. The seasonal effect produced by the large eccentricity of the Martian orbit translates in an aphelion-to-perihelion temperature contrast in every simulated year. However, the magnitude of this seasonal temperature variation is strongly affected by the solar conditions, ranging from 50 K for years corresponding to solar minimum conditions to almost 140 K during the last solar maximum. The 27 day solar rotation cycle is observed on the simulated temperatures at the exobase, with average amplitude of the temperature oscillation of 2.6 K but with a significant interannual variability. These two results highlight the importance of taking into account the solar variability when simulating the Martian upper atmosphere and likely have important implications concerning the atmospheric escape rate. We also show that the global dust storms in MY25 and MY28 have a significant effect on the simulated temperatures. In general, they increase the exospheric temperatures over the low latitude and midlatitude regions and decrease them in the polar regions.©2015. American Geophysical Union.
